The Royal Wedding

So, I don't get it, is UK a democratic-ish monarchy? Not a republic, I don't think there are that many countries that actually are true republics (having "republic" in the country name doesn't make it a republic!). But, from my understanding, the monarch doesn't have the same power as, like, King George the 8th or Queen Victoria and the like. Do you get to vote for all your officials, or only some who then get to pick their own lackeys and croneys who aren't accountable to citizens?

Well actually it isn't, because from my experience the US media are crazier than any other media (no offence intended).

well...

I don't care, and more importantly, I'm annoyed that it gets more news coverage in the US than in the UK. That's a tad backwards.

I find that hard to believe...

To my understanding, the monarchy is just a for show kind of thing. I don't think they make any decisions. They are more like a wealthy family that lives in the UK.

It wouldn't surprise me, countries without any pomp and ceremony end up quite obsessed when they see others doing it.

Thanks, I thought about using wikipedia for that. Makes a bit more sense, but I'm glad it's not the kind of government/country I live in. Not that my country's government is better, it's just that I find it ridiculous and archaic the whole concept of "royalty" and divine right of kings. "Well I didn't vote for you!" - Monty Python. :D

Maybe so, but given the amount of media coverage (not just on TV and in the papers) it's gotten here, I find it hard to believe anywhere could have been more rabid about it than our media.

So as this overblown nothing clearly shows the only reason royalty exists (at least in Britain) is for easy, once again mentioned, panem et circenses.

Well I didn't know, but I looked it up, and apparently, yes, you Americans do graduate to the sound of a hymn extolling the virtues of the British Empire. :P

Quite funny the different ways a tune will be used.

Well yes, but it's uplifting for us to see a big matter of state where the slime of the party political machine is kept far away. Nobody in Britain who was serious about gaining power would ever criticise the royalty, because the public love it so much.

I don't know what this sentence was supposed to be, but it's one of the best I've read in a while. :P

There was supposed to be a "y" before the "s" in "was".

I've never seen much criticism levelled at the Queen by anyone who was literate, in any case.

The British royals had a bit of an earlier education to 'people power' when they (Cromwell) loped off this guy's head. Since then, they've been more progressive than most - which is why they survived the little power shuffle in the 19th century relatively intact, as compared to, say, France. All political systems are a symptoms of its time, just like how most people find the lobbying system in the US to be the perplexing thing they've ever seen.

Help, help! I'm being oppressed!

One of Princess Anne's bull mastiff's mauled the Queen's favourite Corgi. Princess Anne was promptly exiled to Canada.

It's about culture and history. The same reason half of anything in a nation get's done. We just have a different focus for it is all.
