Should that make me interested? Why?

Honestly, that's the only reason to be interested. Prince William is just a random [censored] otherwise. If you don't have any sort of fascination with the royals then you don't have any reason to care.

So, I don't get it, is UK a democratic-ish monarchy? Not a republic, I don't think there are that many countries that actually are true republics (having "republic" in the country name doesn't make it a republic!). But, from my understanding, the monarch doesn't have the same power as, like, King George the 8th or Queen Victoria and the like. Do you get to vote for all your officials, or only some who then get to pick their own lackeys and croneys who aren't accountable to citizens?

EDIT: nevermind, I'll use wikipedia to research it. Let's not get into politics, I wouldn't want this thread to get closed.

Note: I'm American.

Anyway, the UK is a constitutional monarchy. It has a unitary government that uses a parliment. It has two houses, the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The lower house is the really important one. (that's the house of commons) The Prime MInister of the House of Commons is chosen by a coalition or single party which consists of a majority of the members of parliment. If I'm not mistaken, the cabinet of the PM consists of members of parliment. You can think of the PM as a mutant cross between the Speaker of the House and the President if you like.

No, the Prime Minsiter is not "of the commons", he is the Queen's Chief minister and the head of her government. He is traditionally chosen out of whichever party gains the most seats in the Commons, invited to form a government by the queen. If no party get's an overall majority, she sits back and waits for them to agree on a coalition plan, then she invites him.

The cabinet must be made up of members of either house, yes.

And the PM has nothing to do with the speaker, the speaker is a seperate entity in our parliament.

How can anyone in their right mind be fascinated with royalty?! I mean they're just random people who happened to be, through completely random historical occurrences, labelled as the-people-to-be-fascinated-with-if-you're-a-lowly-nonroyal-mortal. Being fascinated by them because they were arbitrarily labelled as to-be-fascinated-with people is... so circularly nonsensical it makes my brain almost asplode.

It's not so much about the people themselves, as the nation they represent. American soldiers salute the flag, we pledge allegiance to the Queen. It's not just like with celebrities.

I have the music of Elgar stuck in my head. [censored] republics!

Yes, yes, but those technicalities aren't necessary for the corgi-lover.

Not your speaker! Our speaker! THe Speaker of the house of Representatives in Congress. Outside of the part about the queen and invitations to form a government, the speaker of the house of representatives and the PM are chosen in a similar way. (except America's two-party system prevents the need for coalitions)

I lack the normal female exitement for wedding. It is sweet when people get married, don't get me wrong. I just can't rationalize all the stress having a grandiose wedding. Romance to me, is not a being in big white puffy dress in front of many, many people. Good luck to them, being in the spotlight politically and celebrity wise, constantly, that must be stressful.

Not your speaker! Our speaker!

I know, I was just making sure you knew that our PM does not have all the functions your speaker does.

William was born into it, he's used to it. And Kate is a royal obsessive fruit-loop, she probably enjoys it. It is believed she had posters of him when she was a girl, in all probability she has been stalking him for years.

Don't worry about it. The Royals are all werewolves anyway.

edit: at Turns the page, Yeah, I know their different functionally, but you gotta compare things to what people are familiar with.

It's not something we talk about to outsiders. Princess Stomper and Regulus have special royal seals that only Brits can see.

I might just lift my head above the sea of negativity that seems to be in this thread and say yes, I will be watching the wedding.

Although I've been completely uninterested in the leadup stories flooding the media (eg. what cake/dress/pies will be used) I am interested in watching the ceremony itself. I'm too young to have seen the last significant royal wedding, so I'm interested in seeing the result of all the incredible effort and planning thats gone into this.

I myself have always been quite interested in the British Royal Family. I'm something of an anglophile myself and I personally believe that the Royal Family is still relevant for the historical, cultural and societal significance it holds (although that may just be the historian in me talking).

Ugh, and here was me thinking I'd escape the bloody thing on here... I'd rather watch dry paint.

I live in America... I've got more important things to worry about.

no, and im tired of hearing it on the news while the newscasters are using fake accents and they play cheesy classical music.

I don't understand the media frenzy about this - and I'm in the US. We kind of fought a war because we don't like monarchies.

Give me a republic any day of the week, and I'll show you where you can shove your "royalty"

I guess they are just celebrities, but it's pathetic how wrapped up people are getting in this. They are just two people, and I don't care about them, or their wedding, or their whole "royalty" schtick.
All of these wrapped in a nice bun. No offense to anyone from England, but I don't really care about royalty getting married. Hell, I didn't even give two [censored] about Chelsea Clinton's wedding, and that was as closest thing to royalty in the USA.

Plus, it interrupted a show I love, even if it is on at 2am central time :banghead:

This event has unfortunately been popular news in Canada, thankfully only drown out by the upcoming elections, but very shortly it will completely consume the media for what portion NHL hockey doesn't. It gets even worse if the Vancouver Canucks (the last Canadian team in the playoffs) were to get eliminated.

Yes, personally I'd rather we had the godlike adulation for someone who had no power than someone who controls the country.
