On the shimmering shores if Skyrim

Post » Wed Feb 09, 2011 7:31 pm

Remember people, just because i say pirates doesn't necessarily mean Black-beard type pirates with pegs for legs and parrots. It just means a group that hijacks, and sells ships and their belongings for money, or to add to their collection of ships.

I'm not sure if this would fit into Skyrim, but i would love to see it in TES. Maybe an expansion that is located nearby the Iliac Bay.

Personally i would love to at least see a personal sailboat to ride around in, using the wind and the realistic physics. I think it would be pretty fun.

it would certainly FIT. the problem is that i don't see any real use for owning a ship in a province landlocked on three sides.

i mean i guess you could use one to cross a lake or go re-enacting Deliverance or something.

maybe an Iliac Bay expansion, though i highly doubt Todd's comment was referring to anything more than recreating just the city of Daggerfall.

if there's a purpose for it or it's USEFUL in some way (like you buy the ship and then just rent it out to a captain who pays you a cut to use it or something and eventually make back your initial investment and start profiting) then yeah sure but i can't really see one.

Wow why was this hiding down here with no replies?

I like the ideas, I dont see any reason not to have more boats/ships in Skyrim.

Personally, being a pirate is an amazing fantasy for me. Probably best tackled in an entirely different game, but I wouldnt mind to see hints of it in TES.

As for a ships you can actually control like a sailboat......perhaps. It could go both ways honestly. Maybe if you could fish or commandeer bigger, better boats or something like that.

Edit*- Crap. I accidentally chose the steamboat option when selecting all the boats. Lol. Count this as ONE LESS vote for steamboats than what shows.

HEY I REPLIED.

i've always liked the idea of like a Victorian naval simulator, like some bizarre cross between Silent Hunter 3 and the Master and Commander series. i don't think Bethesda would be the best developer to pull that off, but [censored] it would be so nice.

It might be useful if there is lots of costal rivers.

Yeah that's why i think it might "fit". maybe there isn't enough water in Skyrim to dedicate a whole chunk of dev time to naval warfare and whatnot, It WOULD make the North coast really enjoyable though.

I think Bethesda should be upping their game as far as having fun in the water goes

I know you beat me to it!

Ive always had school boyish dreams of a enormous pirate game.....There are just so many ideas that come to mind. Defenitely a lot of challenges though too. That and a open world zombie game. One day someone will get these right :foodndrink:

Im sure they could do some things with boats in TES and keep it interesting. God I cant wait for Skyrim

It would be useful for the small boats, but a galleon or Viking rowboat wouldn't really be able to maneuver well. Also, think about the ice. It wouldn't effect the salt water much i don't think, but the fresh-water will probably be partly frozen.

There were pirates in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elder_Scrolls_Adventures:_Redguard and they had their own cool secret port lair thingy too, and I wouldn't mind seeing them return. I do not have any wish of becoming a boat captain, though.

I can only imagine....

Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down a stream,
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a drea--OH [censored] ICE WRAITHS!

In all seriousness, I believe it would add greatly to the game. Looking at the Skyrim map, I see one or two rivers, several lakes, a decent-sized boat would be a nice tool for traversing Skyrim. It would give the northern coast some action, maybe a few islands with a village, perhaps a few ruins. Perhaps some pirate ship fights, I liked slaying sailors/pirates on their ships in Oblivion (A Watery Grave quest made me feel very sneaky for jumping and entering through the captain's door on the rear of the ship).

I don't mind swimming really, and I'm sure that the freezing tempuratures of Skyrim's waters will be ignored and won't pose a threat, so this is only an idea that would be a nice add-on to an already awesome game.

Viking longboats had really shallow draft for their size, which allowed them to get pretty far upstream.

When I hear, "Naval Warfare/Pirates" I think, cannons... Which is too technologically advanced, I mean it's practicly a gun... But pirates in the sense of, them boarding your ship and trying to loot & capture your ship is OKish...

I didn't want to have two smaller sailboat catagories, even though schooners are fairly larger, i thought i might as well just lump them into one. if there were sunfish-like boats in the game i would imagine they would make sail-boats around the same size as a smaller schooner in the game too, but whatever.

Yeah I agree with what was said about it maybe not fitting this TES, however, there was that Oblivion DLC right where you were "captian" of a crew and a dry docked ship (or was is floating in that cavern?). There's always ships involved, whether it be shipwrecks or boats being hijacked by brigands, and there seems to be a slight progression in complexity in successive games. I don't think this is intentional on Beths part, rather it just happened, but hey, who knows, maybe they have a thing for pirates and you might wanna keep ya fingers crossed.

Makes sense. I'm not a viking longboat expert like you, but from what i've seen in books/tv/movies it looks like travel pretty light, and it looks like the boats are kind of designed to "glide" along the surface

In Daggerfall you could buy and own a boat. it was kind of boring and not as much fun as one would think, but it was a different time back then, I feel they couldn't have made it very fun. It's main purpose i think was to help with fast-travel across the Iliac Bay.

Thanks for noticing.

I just realized my topic should have been either "Off the shimmering shores of Skyrim" or "On the shimmering seas of Skyrim"

Well since a sunfish is sailing dinghy, and schooners, which are defined by rig not hull, can be well over a hundred feet long the comparison is very humorous. And there have been schooner rigged galleons, and others have been over 300 hundred feet long.

Why wouldn't pirating work in Skyrim... The vikings did it and the Nords are kind of the Nirn-vikings...
