The Sims

Post » Sun Jun 19, 2011 2:49 pm

As one of the more creative series I'm aware of (that naturally appeals to my character progression/simulated building appetite), I feel as though it was time I got a new Sims game. Until several months ago, I didn't even know that the PC version and console versions of any Sims game were really as different as people make them out to be. My background with the series is being a player on the first Sims (PC version) and a player of the PS2 version of Sims 2, and so I've now got a bit of a dilemma. I've heard some less-than-great things about Sims 3 (Is it really "arcadey"?) and I think Sims 2 for the PC may be a better idea, but I'm not sure. I'm not sure if the PC version of Sims 2 will be anything new to me (as I've only played the PS2 version) and I'm not sure if I would prefer Sims 3 or not. So:

1. How different (and much better) is the PC version of Sims 2 from the PS2 version, if anyone knows, and what about Sims 3?

2. Which is the better game of the two (between the PC versions)?

3. Can this laptop run Sims 3 (specs below in spoiler)?

On a completely separate note, what's the latest news about the series and what do you think of the series and its future? Do you have a favorite game from the series? A favorite spin-off?

The Sims 2 on PS2 has no ageing process, and the thing runs horribly slowly.

The Sims on PS2 had proper 3d graphics, and the addition of a fairly decent story mode. The sandbox mode was more or less the same, but for some reason the game lacked the ability to build second floors.

I actually think my favourite was the console only spinoff, Sims Bustin Out. It had more modernised furniture and clothing, and the ability to move around from home to home, whilst still maintaining a decent sandbox mode.

The Urbz was pretty good too, being rather zany and completely removed from the main series, but the stylised graphics were pretty interesting.

Busting Out was my favorite console game by far.

I personally like PC Sims better than console Sims, mainly because the free mode in the PC version is a lot better than the console version. If you are looking for a story in the game, then console is the way to go. Also, a major difference between console Sims 2 and PC is that in the console version, you control the character directly with the anolog stick.

Sims 3 and Sims 2, for PC, are mainly the same. The only difference is that in Sims 3 you can now freely travel around town without loading, and the whole town ages with your family. Also the design of furniture is a lot more customizable.

I have not played Sims 3 for consoles, so I can not speak on it.

Goth Manor and Tinsel Bluffs were freaking awesome designs. Bookshelf doors, coffin beds, Huge church organ, and that awesome cliffside view in the Bluffs.

Unfortunately, one of my main methods of making money in Goth Manor was breeding carnivourous plants, but guests tended to taunt them, and Mortimer Goth and Malcolm Landgraab were nearly eaten.

The nudist Chase Skurtz was killed, along with our maid. After that, I moved my plants out to a new greenhouse where they wouldn't be messed with, and we (Myself, Bella Goth, and my wife Candy) held a seance to exorcise Chase Skurtz. Mortimer was asleep at the time.

The maid kept coming, even though she was dead, and she was even dead in freeplay mode. It didn't affect her much, she just carried on cleaning, only now she could move though walls, which made her very efficient.

Those were two of my favorites as well, but I also really enjoyed the science lab. Two places I found that I could never make my character happy at were the nudist colony and the gym.

I lost so many good sims to those plants.... after reading this, I wish my maid would have been eaten. :P

I'd go with Sims 3 on PC.

Consoles Sims games are usually very different. I think TS3 on consoles is the most similar to its PC counterpart (but obviously with a lot less content), but TS2 on consoles was a pretty different game.

Ah, I liked the Lab, because my Character was a mad scientist by profession. Those sleep pods were very handy, I had one installed at most locations. I actually held a 3 day party at the lab, people kinda crashed on day two and there was usually a lot of people unconscious in front of the giant multiscreen while I salvaged pizza and cooked burgers.

I also spend an inordinate amount of time living at the nightclub, the poor lighting and limited amenities made advancement difficult, so I put in some huge megawatt lamps to brighten the place up so we could see well enough to clean all the piss up. I made an awesome gaming room there, though.

I hated the Gym as well, that place just wasn't built for living in. Pixel Acres was another difficult one, as everything was outdoors, so the mess was all around you when you tried to improve your mood for work. Chase was dead too so it was hard to do most of the quests. I kinda just went "[censored] it" and built a small house there, with sleep pods and TV. I also increased the number of redwoods, it was like a proper forest.

I hated the Octagan, the military place, It was such an irritating layout.

I did actually enjoy Casa Caliente, the one full of 70s six iconography. It was a pretty cosy house by the sea. We even caught a burglar there, by putting the alarms on a column right near the entrance.

I quite liked Dudley's trailer in the desert too, and Dudley was kinda endearing as a hipster waster, as opposed to his rich kid ass hole persona in Sims 1 (he always let his toilet get clogged so I would have to fix it, and then he'd clog mine).

I thought some of the music in Sims on the hi fi and radios is kinda catchy too.

Oh wow, I looked on the Sims Wiki, there are entire geneaologies on there. It's a bit disheartening to know that Bob and Betty Newbie have died of old age.

The nightclub for me always ended up with me sacrificing someone to clean the place every waking moment. I don't understand how it always got so dirty.

Pretty much exactly what I ended up doing. :P I had a little house for me, and a few beds outside for the rest of them.

Ah, I really loved the items unlocked there, especially the love rug. ;)

It was a really nice change. After I completed the game, I redesign the inside of the trailer and made it really fancy just for [censored] and giggles.

Mimi's house was a nice place to level up your career. Whenever I needed a promotion, that is the place I would go.

I would recommend that you get the sims 2 instead of the sims 3 mainly because the sims 3(even with the lowest graphics setting possible) will not allow you to play for more than 45 mins. After that it will crash.

Is the gameplay monstrous or just technical issues?

Are there any mods for either game? They seem like the perfect games to mod.

The gameplay is fine it's the technical issues that are bad. I remember playing the sims 3 for haif an hour and then it crashed. If you go to the sims 3 forums just about everyone is complaining about how often it crashes. Its not really the best game to mods either.

I dunno what he's on about, I don't have those issues. Awesomemod fixes any bugs that EA "forgot" as well.

The Sims 2, however, you will spend half of your game time at loading screens unless you never leave your lot.

The one thing complainy people argued about in case of TS3 was that it took what basically was the console Sims gameplay (quest and collection-based) and put it into their PC version. I like the more game-y instead of plain simulation playstyle of TS3 - you still can play without even remotely looking at opportunities if you don't want them. Modding isn't lacking either, it's even the first game where EA invited selected modders before release to show off the capabilities of the engine.

Then I wonder how I can keep playing for hours. :shifty:
That said, I still wonder if they only delayed that one bug that affected me, where your whole town somehow froze after you put 20 hours or so in, at least after the Late Night addon, since before that the limit was virtually unreachable. But my current town has more than 30 hours and doesn't show any signs of lag, so I think they might have fixed it with the Generations patch.

http://www.modthesims.info/. Not all of them are perfect, but there's some pretty amazing stuff on there. I love the "No choking on your food every 10 seconds" patch. That was so annoying...
