The size of Skyrim

Is the world of Skyrim going to be bigger than the one of Cyrodill? Just wondering since I'd like a huuuge map to explore ;)

I think yes because small scale of the Oblivion world was one of the critics.

And please i want every single square mile on the map explorable. Don't make it like Fallout 3's map which blocked the way to some certain locations due to wreckage of destroyed buildings.

They can scale the world using the distance/speed ratio. The speed in Oblivion was galactic at 100 level. Make horses faster and the running slower.

Good. Good. I spend most of the time in exploring so this is really important to me.

Uh, since when?

Both Fallout 3 and Morrowind had smaller maps and were both better than Oblivion in my opinion, and the opinions of many others.

Skyrim as a Province in tamriel is smaller than Cyrodiil. However, we still don't know if they're just restricting the game to Cyrodiil or if it will bleed over to other areas.

true, but they already messed up the size/geography/nature of cyrodiil so why not make Skyrim larger than it appears on map for gamers' sake

For some strange reason I always felt the Morrowind map was bigger than the one from Oblivion. I loved it when I got lost there.

Little number of cities in Oblivion is one of the main critics and it is not really possible to squeeze more settlements in a Oblivion scale world mind you... So the commen sense: LARGER WORLD.

It's not how big the land is, it's how you use it.
Exploring in Oblivion wasn't rewarding. I don't remember single cave that was interesting from Oblivion. Level scaling pretty much meant I had better chance of getting good loot from level 20 bandits who were now always carrying either best light armor or best heavy armor in the game.
Exploring in Morrowind and Fallout 3 was rewarding. I don't remember single cave that wasn't interesting from Morrowind. Fallout 3s dungeons also had some kind of story tied to it and usually was rewarding. I didn't have dull moment exploring.

I don't remember anyone criticizing it for not having enough cities. The problem was that the towns and the Imperial City in particular was pathetically small.

They need to make the cities bigger and space them out more. This means a much bigger world than Oblivion with horse travel being almost a necessity to get around. Of course this isn't going to happen.

Oblivion: 4 miles by 4 miles

Morrowind: 2 miles by 3 miles

Daggerfall: Infinity

Heard these dimensions here, so if they're wrong, that's not my fault.

Morrowind and Fallout: New Vegas both had smaller worlds and had no trouble squeezing in WAY more settlements.

The main critique of Oblivion that I hear in this regard is that it's too bland and repetitive, and full of areas that just seem like filler. Making the world bigger would only make this problem more likely to arise again.

Plus, Oblivion was one of the biggest games ever, especially once you factor in all of Oblivion + dungeons and such as well as Cyrodiil's huge landmass. I really don't think anyone can legitimately complain that it wasn't big enough.

I hope they make the caves/ruins/houses more interesting and actually have a purpose. Also level scaling for these areas makes them too generic and thus, less interesting to explore.

Thankyou , but can someone provide a more "certain" font ? I mean something more official Like?

I have been recently working on a mod project on a Cryengine 2 that allows at max a 16 x 16 sq kms land , personally I am working on a 8 x 8 kms island ... so it should mean that this area is 64 sq kms so way bigger than Oblivion?

http://static02.mediaite.com/geekosystem/uploads/2010/05/Large-Video-Game-Worlds.jpg Doesn't mention Morrowind though.

I think the world with the size of Oblivion is large enough, it just needs the illusion of being larger. There should be plenty of high mountains so hopefully we won't be able to overlook the entire province from any point in the world. Not having instant fast travel access to all cities across the map will help too.

To me, Morrowind and Fallout 3 felt larger than Oblivion.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion -- 16 square miles
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind -- 6 square miles
The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall -- 62 square miles

-saw that somewhere, not exact again. And Fallout 3 is supposedly about 80-90% the size of Oblivion, and New Vegas I have no idea.

But yeah, Daggerfall isn't infinite.. it just might as well be.

I really can't believe that Oblivion was almost 3 times larger than Morrowind.

Yeah. But Morrowind was just so much more fleshed out. You couldn't turn around without discovering a new location. In Oblivion you always had quite a few samey looking green-hills to pass over before getting to your next location. Plus horses and fast travel destroy illusions of size

And also there was one main road in Oblivion with some extra space from both sides and that was it.
