THE Skyrim Horses topic...

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 3:12 pm

In retrospect, I don't think mounted combat would have worked in Skryim.

Anyone that's played Mount & Blade should know that a good cavalry battle requires two things: speed and space. Skyrim is really scaled down. There isn't a lot of space for a good mounted fight and where there is, the speed would make it feel even smaller.

So, if they're going to add mounted combat in the future, the world needs to be bigger, too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=uAgwVcQWcRA this is how they should leave battle.

The only way I can see horses being made useful is as pack horses. Or as something to cut open and sleep in if they implement cold weather damage.

I was very exited when i got that certain horse...you all know(idk how to use the spoiler button), but now that i have him i never use him because its just an annoyance. Riding down the road, o there's a wolf gota get off my horse, and by the time the animations done hel be right on my ass. Horses in TES just svck and it makes complete sense now that todd and the team where considering not putting them in.

Dynasty Warriors 7 lets you ride a bear. Might be an interesting mount idea for Skyrim? o.O Might satiate the meat eating horse want, too.

Maybe bethesda could go steps further in horse use and install jousting?

Maybe the D&D spectral steed could be adapted to Skyrim?

As for mounted Combat, Dynasty Warriors does it workably. You pretty much just attacked towards a horse flank, or trampled people, or had your horse jump on them. Bow use off horseback would be nice too.

I mean I've never tried long distance horse riding, but I imagine that being attacked while on horseback means risking your horses' life in a dismount animation, and then drawing your weapon while combat, possibly with mages. I wouldn't gamble with that even on shadowmere who may well be completely immortal. If you just ride off, you leave your follower(s) behind! That's horrible!

My horse will sometimes run away when we're attacked..and I have to fast travel to find him again..other times..he gets ride in the middle of the melee and I've accidentally killed him...in or out dude. I don't mind if you run away..just don't get in my way like the f***ing dog...argh..reload. :)

LMFAO! I had this same conversation at my tv when I had a similar situation in Skyrim! My dog is always doing the same s**t, even when I'm trying to go down the stairs. I laughed my butt off one night (years ago, I had almost forgotten about this) when my dad was waiting to come down the stairs but the dog was just sitting there in front of him and he just lost it and started yelling, "Zoey, get the f**k out of my way! Jesus!"

Tytanis mod lets you ride Sabres and Mammoths right now, he's working out the kinks but it's a definite start.

I've taken to using Frost more and more, because I like galloping across the countryside and I no longer stop to pick every freakin' flower and bug on the way. That said, when I dismount to fight, I open the console and turn off the dumb animals AI so that it doesn't go full [censored].

(I didn't know a synonym for "slow" was a bad word. Sorry Bethesda! You know the tabboos of English better than I!)

I think combat should definitely be in. Jousting could be done maybe not in the open map but in an arena, which would be fun. Spectral Steed- definitely! Conjuration spell, perhaps?

You can play horseshoes with their horseshoes! Jk, but they get me around so it makes me not fast travel and see every side of the world.

Oh and, shadowmere for the win! And for emporer!

Cheers

Seriously, though, Busey, now I have to ask: why? Is "Horsekack" an actual word? I just thought it was an amusing typo.

the reason why is bethesda tried to make a cashcow instead of a good game.

Really?

Thats why you think Beth didn't include man eating horses that svck bones like spaghetti noodles, huh?

Did you think maybe the OP was just yanking your chain a little?

I agree.

I loved them in Oblivion but don't use them in Skyrim at all.

Red Dead Redemption totally raised the bar for this mechanic and Bethesdas take just doesn't cut the mustard for me anymore.

I would love to see mounted combat implemented effectively somehow. The only other gripe I have about horses is that controlling them feels like you're steering a battleship and turning really slow makes them pivot on some imaginary central axis that totally takes me out of the game. There is no turning of the horse's head to make them turn (how horses are actually controlled) like there is in Red Dead Redemption or in Assassin's Creed. If they just fixed the handling, added a way to at least shoot a bow on horseback, and maybe even store some items on the horse, they would be darn near perfect. The animations are actually very good, however. They have no problems depicting horse movement on screen, just the feel of the horse.

That's why I only use them for RP purposes and for traveling long distances (without a companion as they can't keep up).

Yeah I'm pretty sure a horse svcking the flesh and muscle off of a human breaks the laws of physics.

It's not possible.

Maybe the laws of physics on Nyrm are different? The Argonian version of Einstein may have figured out things different.

Had an urge to post this.

I ride Shadowmere. :P
Might have a stolen horse in my past, beyond a quest, but Shadowmere is my horse of choice in a world of dragons, and dangers.

Overall, I like horses. They work like a strength potion. If you're over loaded with gear, hop on a horse, and you can fast travel. Shadowmere will gladly trample a bandit, or a dragon nearby.

Lacking horse combat is annoying. It's why I don't ride, coz I don't like getting caught with my pants down, so to speak. That, and my follower can't ride, nor keep up properly.

Kinda weird that your horse will detect you, too. When you're sneaking in hostile areas, it can throw a person off, right?

Another gripe is the fact there's no hose call. I'd like one, honestly. Not necessarily something crazy like calling your horse, and it teleports across Skyrim to you (Unless it's a shout. o.O) but something for if your horse is kinda close, but out of arm's reach, you know? Sometimes after a fast travel your horse isn't near the enterance to a cave/ruin.

Games like Red Dead Redemption, and Dynasty/Samurai Warriors kinda spoiled me on the idea of a horse call. :P

I'm starting to imagine Dynasty Warrior horses in the game now, like Red Hare, and the elephant which would probably be a mammoth.

Or Red Dead Redemption's horses of the apocalypse, or the Unicorn.

Maybe we could get a pegasus?

Maybe we could get a horse stable expansion? Sort of like a horse garage so we can have multiple horses?

Oh the possibilities!

I hope I didn't derail the topic. o.O

This.

Though to be fair, as far as actually riding horses goes, RDR also had totally different mechanics that actually sorta svcked in doors. But in that game, that wasn't very often.

Yes, I bet physics in a world of Daedric Gods are a real zinger. If I personally was in skyrim I'd watch myself around the horses.

Also, even in our world of "physics," horses do strange things such as bite a chunk out of a wooden picnic table you happen to be sitting at eating your lunch.

horses are a waste, they're not that fast and run out of steam way too fast..my mage has more stamina then a horse and I havent put any points into stamina.

I was hoping for mammoth or dragon mounts..anything beats horses. I was hopeful when i heard about "tundra striders" but it seems to only be a story as.horses are the only mounts

What I would add to horses in skyrim:

1. Horse call!. I dont want to be running around looking for my beast. I would love a way to call my horse and if he is within a reasonable distance he ll come to me. It would be nice i the ability to call your horse would be linked to quest related to the specific horse.

2. I can carry 344 units of weight , my gigantic nord horse can not carry anything. I would love the ablity to use horses as storage. It would be great to greatly remove carrying capacity of followers to rebalance the game.

3. The capacity to interact with my horse. For example, After a fight his health might be low, so I have to feed him to restore his health. This should have the effect of restoring his health and gaining his trust and affection. With enough trust and affection he should come to me when I whistle. This would also make it tragic if by mistake i kill my pony.

4. Last but not least, RENAME My HORSE!!!. When I bought my first horse in whiterun, the guy told me that the horse was 7 years old and healthy. He also told me the name of the horse and that he expected I could name the horse whatever I wanted. Yet the reality is that my horse is called, Archimid's horse.

I don't care what they say, my horse's name is Buttocks Rodriguez. And he does normally eat people but there's a glitch that doesn't let him do it. But it's getting patched.
