The Skyrim map

Post » Tue Apr 27, 2010 12:35 am

I got interested about how the skyrim map would look like, and so I created this map.
This is purely fanart, but i'd like to hear from you what would go where.

There's a lot of lore about skyrim and I know squat of that.
So can you help me improve the map and maybe let it look like something proper that could resemble what it should/would look like?

Feel free to comment or upload you own version of Skyrim.
I know that it has too little snow/ice areas. But we can improve :)

here's the link to the map

Here's a new (and bigger) version:

version 3.0 with bigger Skyrim :)

Nice map, but I think eastern/southeastern/northeastern Skyrim should have far more snow.

Cartography is a passion of mine and I must say I like your aesthetics, it manages to be straightforward and uncluttered without appearing too simple. What software did you use?

i like the southern part of the map but ive always imagined it with snow to the north too. maybe with the central area as a grass/woodland. if they implement seasons it would be nice to see the low land wooded/grass area flood during the summer or become a marshland, or become a meadow type area with little streams and rivers that form from the melting snow. during winter it would be frozen forest or barren snow field with barren tree's.

Thx :) I use Adobe Photoshop because its the only software I realy know how to use. Have a wacom bamboo drawing tablet which helps a lot.

I'm not fond of the coloring because the colors itself aren't good enough (to get that "paper" look) and the areas aren't nearly divided as they should.
But before I redo that, I wanted some proper feedback on how to let it look more like it should.

...if they implement seasons...

Does Tamriel actualy have seasons like us? If they have a summer and a winter, I could make 2 versions

Yeah there are seasons

That map is perfect for summer, for winter it would be pretty much all snow covered.

Nice job. :)

On the topic of the game, I wonder if Skyrim will have expanded slightly since Oblivion. Perhaps Bruma or other cities near the border will have been absorbed into the province. Granted if there's civil war borders mean little, so the only true boarders to go by would be the official ones.

I imagine Skyrim kinda like Yellowstone Park in the winter, with some hot-springs and geysers edged by snow covered forests. It is the closest province to Red Mountain (other than north east Cyrodiil). So I hope there is some subterannean volcanic activity going on. So I don't think you could really change your map to show it, but that is what I imagine is going on between Riften and Windhelm.

Looks Good!

Also, who knows it the game may include High Rock and Hammerfell!!!!

Err... Would it be too cheesy to include J?rmungandr (some sort of Sea Monster-Snake ) in the norhtern sea, a little distant from the shores?

That is a great map but I thought it was "Falcrenth" not "Falkreath". Or did that name change from the "Arena" maps.

if only you could keep the texture from the background on the parts where you colored, that would be cool.

Skyrim is the most rugged region in the continent; not only containing five of the highest peaks in Tamriel, Skyrim also is very snowy and cold, and home to all manner of lycanthropes, with them being most common in the north. Only in the western reaches is there some measure of flat land, where most of the population resides. The rest of Skyrim is vertical; mountains, cliffs, and deep valleys. A variety of crops are raised in Skyrim, from wheat to the hardy snowberry.

I'll give it a look, maybe expanding some places a bit.

Looks great. Nice 3d look to the map. I'm glad that I went an other direction, because then it doesn't look too alike

Thanks for the info.

I'll try and put in every ideas and thoughts to make it look like it should do.
luckily I used a lot of layers, so I can change things easily :)

Are the small island groups along the shore based on official maps (ie, confirmed to be there)? They look appropriate and realistic either way, and I hope there are plenty of small northern islands in the game, but I'm curious if they're official or your own interpretation.

It looks good so far. Nice work!

Alas, it's my own interpretation. ;) thanks though.
I updated the map a bit with some more snow, but I think I'll stamp this as the "summer" map.

<.... J?rmungandr ...>
Don't know about that, I'll look it up

While sea-monsters do not actually belong in official maps (unless someone knowledgeable in Viking era cartography steps in), I am sure it belonged in many maps by ppl back then calling themselves 'experienced sea travellers' and such. This sort of thing - sea-monsters - would fit in treasure / adventure maps, more or less like in Lifting Vale Oblivion quest you had markers pointing an area long lost.

I just found it would be fun to see all this taking geography and lore too serious and have a cheesy detail in an official map. Well - not so cheesy after all, as we are going to have dragons?

Well, uh:
1. It's a fantasy game with dragons and Nords aren't vikings, although some stuff is Scandinavian inspired.
2. Everything related to writing on a large scale only came to christianized areas, like in monasteries and abbeys. Limited other sources are runic carvings in stone or organic material. The thing is, christianisation more or less heralded the end of viking activities.
3. It's a critical element of North European Iron Age world view, so it could belong there. Problem is: point 1 & 2 are still valid.

I enjoyed checking out the map. Also is there a bigger version of that 3D map? It would be nice to compare this to what we can assume Skyrim to be.
