The Snow Elves

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 5:24 am

It is believed that the Falmer were the original elven inhabitants of Skyrim, the northernmost province of the continent, and were defeated and displaced by the Nords. The Pocket Guide to the Empire's, Skyrim chapter mentions the Snow Elves as a local superstition, with Nord villagers blaming them for a number of random misfortunes and scant physical evidence of their existence.

Extensive discussion in the Lore Forum on the little fellas, ages before we knew TES:V would be in Skyrim:
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1054304-falmer/

The new setting presents an opportunity to address the fate of the Snow Elves once and for all - or to simply expand the lore. How would you like the lost race of mer to be handled in TES:V?

Personally, I think extremely rare and hard to find instances of Falmer would mesh best with the lore, and be the most interesting option, possibly with quests revolving around them to either reconcile them or wipe them out entirely. PGE 1st Edition on Skyrim, which I've been studying intently, says that runes and some artifacts remain - it would be intriguing to see and to harness powerful and ancient relics from the first wars between men and mer.

Well it would be nice to run into one by a quest means but I don't want the option to be a snow elf though.

Or maybe they're the enemy everyone thought was long gone? :o

Like the Ayleids, minus them coming back.

I think it would be cool if there was a small village of them, but I don't like the idea of them being a playable race. Perhaps you visit them as part of the story?

Now there's a suggestion!

The Falmer could apply to these statements;

"When the sons of Skyrim would spill their own blood. (A stretch, but the Falmer have as much right to be called 'sons of Skyrim' as the invader Nords)
But no-one wanted to believe.
Believe they even existed." (definitely applies to Falmer)

Still, I doubt it - I don't recall any connection between Falmer and dragons, and if the Falmer do exists, it's unlikely they'd be able to threaten Skyrim after the last beating they took.

I like the idea of visiting a small falmer village, hidden by magical protections. You need to visit some ancient priest to aid you in the main quest.

It is still a possability, one of which I would love to see happen. =]

Yeah, that's the same stumbling block I came up across :P

And your last point holds good too. I really can't think of anywhere for them to go to regroup and rebuild. I don't really see them fleeing to Atmora :P

I liked the mysteriousness of the Dwemer and finding the old artifacts.. but at the same time I wished there was some way to meet one. But maybe that's better. The mystery not the actual meeting of. Not sure.
I voted some remote surviving few who live in isolation.. Although the mystery and non appearance would probably be more fun to explore.

I'd say mostly like the Ayleids, with maybe a little bit of the more mysterious dwmer feel mixed in for a stronger feel, iwth that small remote remaining Falmer villiage that you have to visit as part of a quest that gives you some (but definitely not all) of the answers to the mysteries of the Falmer.

I'd prefer seeing them appear in a minor way. To be a major part of the story may be a bit much... but I'd be fine with it if they did it well. Like the last dwarf.

The Falmer could also apply to the first parts of the monologue:
"You should have acted.
They're already here. (hidden away, in remote mountains or caves, as suggested by superstitious Nords in PGE1stE?)
The Elder Scrolls told of their return. (return - we know they have been banished once)
Their defeat was merely delay" (defeat at the Battle of the Moesring?)

The dragon aspect, remains a stumbling block. However, we know from Fall of The Snow Prince that they had powerful magicks - could they have used it to remain hidden, whilst rebuilding and conspiring with dragons (of Akavir?) to retake Skyrim for the mer?

All of this is rampant speculation, of course, but it kind of fits.

It's rampant speculation, but it's one of the ideas I like the best. I mean, that would be one hell of a conflict!

I'm fully expecting there to be "Falmer ruins" in Skyrim right now. Just like how we had Dwemer ruins in Morrowind and Ayleids ruins in Cyrodiil. And I wouldn't mind it at all.

I'm pretty sure "they" refers to Dragons? Not Falmer. I could be dead wrong, though.

A mix of the ayleids and the dwenmer mystery. It would be cool to have a remote village of them or at least just one remain much like that dwenmer guy.

to be honest they never say who "they" are. Sure there is a dragon in the teaser but it would just be for epic effect.

Apparently the nords kicked out all the mer.
I could see there possibly being small caves inhabited by them, or maybe there ghosts.
However, they could actually be reiklings, which Im expecting to see quite often in Skyrim.
High Rock apparently has a cave called Glacier Crawl, which is inhabited by light blue skinned mer believed to be the Falmer.
Lore says no cities were left behind by the Falmer, so that kinda kills the ruins idea, doesnt it?
