The soul of Morrowind, the heart of Oblivion...

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 3:41 pm

I always thought this debate was silly. Morrowind was great and was my introduction into TES. The reason I like Morrowind better has nothing to do with nostalgia, but because it was more of a complete game than Oblivion. Had Bethesda had more time with the hardware and a better understanding with next gen technology, Oblivion would have easily been just as great as Morrowind, if not better. Considering Skyrim will not have any of the issues of development that Oblivion did, I'm looking forward to Skyrim replacing Morrowind as my favorite TES game.

knowing the technology your working with doesnt make your quest/dialogue writing any better or worse

Can you explain what this "heart" and "soul" is or supposed to mean?

It's just a metaphor, take it for wht you feel it is. There's a distinct pattern in previous games that can be felt in the next in series. For me what made Morrowind great was the sense of oddity and wonderous story. The heart of Oblivion would be the gripping adventure and feeling of belonging with it.

So long as they make it a seperate game that deserves seperate design attention and only happens to have the same qualities as previous games, an not merely try to glue together different piecies from what they've already done and add a different facade to it, it'll be grand. From what we've seen from Todd Howard's interview, that's the case.

I don't care about graphics or anything like that I just want the game to be fun and challenging. To me Oblivion was too easy with its hand holding for every quest and with the compass that told you exactly where to go. That is what made Morrowind fun, the challenge of the quests ( although the main quest was rather boring) and how there was actually a point to going off the trail, like to find loot and cool items. Oblivion sadly made the dungeon diving experience boring and pointless, but what Oblivion did get right was atmosphere, although not a jungle like previous people have said, it still was beautiful and immersive. In my opinion of what would make TES V good would be to combine Morrowind's difficulty and sense adventure with Oblivion's atmosphere and immersiveness ( and throw in some of Daggerfall's randomness as well) that would make the perfect Elder Scroll game.

Personally, I think Oblivion completely failed with their potential. They could've made Morrowind seem like, "Wow, you're playing Morrowind, I heard Frogger was deeper than that." It was the melding pot of cultures. They could've made you able to become a Duke or an Arch-Duke where you'd control huge expanses of land and could build your lands by helping the people or destroy them by helping crime and skooma smugglers. Or where you could control a skooma smuggling ring. Or where you could either prevent two cities from going to war or instigate it and help one or help both or help neither. Or you could've joined the Imperial Legion (national crisis and we're not accepting recruits?) where you'd lead squads of men into Oblivion Gates.

What about Anvil, a seaport town... You could've sailed the seas hunting down pirates and bandits. Could've joined some Nord Tavern Fights. Perhaps in Leyawiin you could help the Count or Countess as an inquisitor! These're just off the top of my head.

Please make this game and let me play it. I would pay the price of about 10 games for what you just described.

The soul of Morrowind, the heart of Oblivion, and the immensity of Daggerfall, the humor of Redguard, the stolidity of Battlespire, the [censored] of Arena. There, my wishlist. It's going to be amazing nevertheless...

Personally, I'm hoping Skyrim will have: the heart of Daggerfall - truly heroic, grand, ambitious; the soul of Morrowind - a beautiful world of intrigue for the adventurer in all of us; and the mind of Oblivion - open, accessible, and never boring. Mix with two parts baking soda.

This is probably the best description which I can agree with.

we now know it will draw directly from Morrowind too (main music theme, sphere centurion and who knows what else)

I agree with you about it going to be kind of a mix between the two but also adding its own unique flavor. However... your point about the music theme isn't valid at all. Oblivion echoed Morrowind's theme also. Just listen to the menu music -- it's pretty much the same as the Skyrim theme with different instrumentation...

Don't forget eye of newt.
People always forget eye of newt, ends up turning the whole thing into some sort of nasty cottage cheese substance.

I second that!

I never said it wasn't, what I'm saying is that it is going to be carried on to yet another game (making it an integral part and not just a leftover from a prequel) and it seems it is going to be expanded, built upon as well.

I "think" they loved Morrowind and Oblivion equally. I got into ES through Oblivion, and I don't regret a single hour I invested into that game so, to me, seeing Elder Scrolls V is like seeing the next installment in an epic movie series. However, I agree with you in the sense that everyone has to encourage this game...Bethesda's going to need it's fans to maintain their support to keep spirits high.

It's interesting that you mention the theme's inspiration from Morrowind because I caught that, too. To me, Oblivion's theme was supposed to be that "call to action" to rally fans and nonfans alike, and to represent the freshness of the series. Skyrim goes back to the past (with a completely new style) to, in my opinion, represent how the very plot involves the past games. And also yeah, after Fallout I think Bethesda would like to go back to its series with a big homage.
