The Southern Ocean?

Post » Fri Jan 14, 2011 6:43 am

I was watching a quiz show, and it said to name 4 of the 5 oceans of the world. I could name the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Artic. I was scratching my head, what is the 5th? I never herd of the 5th. So I googled it. The Southern Ocean? What the Heck?! It came in 2000? I never even herd of this in the news. Couldn't they make a better name for it?

So am I the only one who never knew about the Southern Ocean.

Antarctic Ocean, you mean? Never heard it called the "Southern Ocean", however.

It seems to go by other names. The Antarctic Ocean sounds familiar.

I always thought the Atlantic/Pacific oceans included the areas around Antarctica? Huh. Of course, I never really learned that kind of geography after 2000 (when the ocean was named). That's more the kind of stuff you learn in early elementary school, not middle or high school so it is no surprise I didn't hear of it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Ocean, the one in the South Pole region. The Arctic Ocean is the one in the North Pole region. Combined with the Big Three that everyone knows that makes five.

Spoiler
I didn't know that either, but Wikipedia rocks.

Aegean Sea
Adriatic Sea
Arabian Sea
Black Sea
Caspian Sea
Mediterranean Sea
Red Sea.

Did I name enough Seas for you? Lol, on the topic of Oceans though, there is also the Indian Ocean as well, but I've often seen it considered a Sea rather than an Ocean, due to it's smaller size.

Southern Ocean makes me think of the Futurama episode (The Deep South, I think) where they go fishing over the ocean, and their spaceship gets dragged down into the water by a giant fish, and they somehow can't float back to the top, and then Zoidberg makes a new home there, and Fry finds a Mermaid living in the lost city of Atlanta (lol), and he falls in love with her, and they finish fixing the ship, and Fry has a change of heart and decides to go back with them, and Zoidbergs house burns down somehow, and he decides to go back, too.

Thats the way the cookie crumbles. Northern Hemisphereians pick on the Southern Hemisphereians, so the Southern Hemisphereians pick on the slightly more Southern Hemisphereians, so the slightly more Southern Hemisphereians pick on the Lizardmen in the Earth's core, so the Lizardmen in the Earth's Core pick on the Northern Hemisphereians and the circle of life continues.

The Southern Ocean is the one surrounding Antarctica. And technically there are 7 oceans but they slapped four of them together. The North and South Pacific Ocean, the North and South Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean
