Is there any lore on the Spear Embargo in Cyrodiil during the Oblivion Crisis?

Azura outlawed spears. :P

But this is a gameplay/design thing actually.

The Emperor gathered all the spears in Cyrodiil so that the CoC could use them during his/her quest. Unfortunately, Uriel died before telling the Champion where they were all hidden.

After being subject to the lewd obscenities that Vivec used his Spear in during his trial when he had his way with Azura, Uriel was so totally nauseated at the sight of spears that it was banned empire-wide.

Too many cheaters in Morrowind <_<
Each time they spawned a spear through console they took one from the guards in Cyrodiil.

Bethesda was afraid that if they put spears in the game, people would accuse Oblivion of having simulated [censored]. Jack Thompson would have been all over it.

They weren't included because they didn't want to animate them in the combat system. Which makes you wonder why they put them in Morrowind, they weren't animated well there either.

Not that I'm against having them. Just some effort would be nice.

Who uses spears? Or takes up spear as a skill? Not many people, I'd wager. A lot of what Oblivion did was trim the fat. It was just a little too eager in this case (as well as others).

I'm talking about players, smarty. Compared to swords and axes, of which named unique types tend to proliferate in rpgs, spears aren't exactly a popular choice.

Edit: Cripes, I can't get over this comment. How stupid do you think I am, Emerald?

I'd rather beat things to death with my own hands or shoot them
in between the eyes with one of my steelys.
I think the neveraine just wanted to be a jerk to Cyrodill and kept all of 'em.

On a related note, did they ever explain away the shurikens?

I believe M'aiq can give an explanation, even if it isn't the best explanation in the world.

"Some people wish to throw their weapons. That seems foolish to M'aiq. If you hold your weapon, you only need one."

Seriously, though, then they'd have to calculate trajectory for thrown weapons, aside from other complications.

Same thing with crossbows. Ostensibly this was to focus on refining the bow and arrow experience, but well...

But they didn't have flails in Morrowind, and since they didn't have the physics to question about like the newest, did they just forget them?

Quite possibly.

To be clear, I'm not sure whether the absence of crossbows and throwings stars are a physics problem or a "couldn't be arsed" problem. Though probably everything falls into the latter category in some way.

Me, I've always argued the fantasy trope pool could benefit from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urumi.

actually, pretty much anyone who understood how to use their added range to their advantage. since they had a longer reach than swords and axes, you could either play hit and run while going backwards, often beating a significantly stronger enemy without taking a single hit, or, once your skill got higher, you would hit first and trigger a knockdown, and then pretty much go to town on them as they stood up. Also, if you noticed the a.i. was dumb as a brush, so i found myself farming really powerful weapons from dremora by simply standing behind objects out of their reach, and stabbing them repetedly as they ran helplessly into the item(usually a fallen piller or even an open door worked). so yeah, if you understood how to use range, they put conventional weapons to shame.

as for you second question, well, your comments about spears usefulness dont help your case much

kind of like they did with the arrows? Sadly the bottom line was that oblivion was simplified for simpler players, and the result was simply dissapointing.

I didn't say they weren't useful. I said they weren't used as much. So you're not inspiring confidence yourself.

(It's a guess, yeah, but I base off typical rpg trends.)

while not a true "spear", a Naginata is the preferred countermeasure to a Katana.

However, considering that the way in which those stupid imperials are using those katana, I suppose the utility of a properly used naginata is moot.

yeah a naginata is closer to a halbred or glaive (or ideally a voulge, which is basicly the same thing exactly), thats why i generally use the term polearm to cover the spread. It was still an asanine call on todd's part, but the modders have already fixed it, and the dreadful hand to had attacks, so if nothing else, we can rely on the users to correct the mistakes of the "professionals"
