The starting Tutorial...

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:12 am

One thing I could not stand was the incessantly boring, over done starting tutorial in Oblivion. Sure it was fun the first time but the next time it got boring fast, every other time after that I couldn't even stand it. I loved how Morrowind had a short little "Pick your race, class, birth sign, and sign here. Pickup that knife and lock pick if you want otherwise exit and grab the stuff from the barrel and talk to the imperial" that was it and you where in the game world just like that!

So what kind of Tutorial do you think Skyrim will have?

you know you can make a save just before you leave the sewers in oblivion. they let you change your character, your class and all that. If you want to play another character you just load it up make changes and away you go.

I kind of went a little nuts in the tutorial and leveled my restoration sneak marksman security acrobatics and athletics a lot before leaving with one character. I did such a good job that I leveled up three times when I beat up the bandits at vilverin. I still have the save game, too.

I am hoping for something that shows us the basic controls and then as you do stuff in the game a window will pop up explaining it in more detail.

EDIT: I actually didnt think of that Tlanti.

The thing is though, you shouldn't have to rely on a save-game gimmick like that to get through the starter tutorial. The game shouldn't be that bad that you have to do that. Which you did. Which is the entire point of this thread.

The starter tutorial should be quick, fun, and simple. Like Morrowind.

Exactly my point! If not at least let us skip it.

Hang on a minute, the tutorial for Oblivion was part of the introduction to the story of the main quest.

Why not just do every quest then save the game just before running past Mehrunes Dagon at the end and then you will not have to sit through any of the game on replays before completing it.

I had a save just before leaving the sewer, but would sometimes still do the tutorial dungeon again.

Can you guess that I quiet liked the tutorial. Yes morrowind had a quick and easy way which I also enjoyed.

For Skyrim I would expect general player control will be handles as you walk to you execution, and combat will be handle as part of your escape (from the guards or a dragon) and you will be supported by the Blade guy who is mentioned somewhere ......Estord or something

I hope they don't make it as long as Oblivion. I often get the urge to start a new Oblivion game but get bored and quit during the tutorial dungeon. I do have a save at the sewers but for some reason I don't like to rely on that. When I start a new game I have to start from the beginning and play it properly or I can't get into it. So something like Morrowind or Fallout New Vegas would be good.

Honestly, I would prefer Oblivion style. I didn't like Morrowind's tutorial too much... because I didn't really know what on earth I was choosing. I had no chance to try different skills. It's something I understand, because I can't see a way to let you try your different skills when you are arriving to the census and all of that... Anyway, I liked how Oblivion did it, showing you what was going on and showing you your different options.

Thats not the point, the point is that I make multiple characters and dont want to see the "Introduction to the story of the main quest" every time I start a new character.

Didn't they already say there wont be a long tutorial like Oblivion?

Don't really care if there is a tutorial, but I certainly think it should be much shorter than Oblivion if there is.

Just a simple "Pick your dude" and a "Hey shoot that thing and punch this" to show you the new control system, then kick you out the door.

I'll find some pants outside when I tear it off a bandit along with his skin.

Why not just try to play one save? :disguise:

I still play the tutorial for Obliv sometimes but most of the time I just use the save game at the sewer exit. I hope the tutorial for Skyrim is short and fun no matter how many times you start over.

I liked New Vegas's More than Oblivion's and Morrowind's

I like Fallout 3's the most though, no matter how many New Games I make, I don't mind repeating it at all. I imagine that's more to Liam Neeson's credit though.

So, Overall

1.Fallout3
2.Fallout: New Vegas
3.Morrowind
4.No Tutorial At all.

See the multiple posts about saves just before exiting the sewers? That's why so many of us do that.

I also should point out, for New Vegas in particular, the Tutorial is nicely integrated into the game itself, instead of seeming separate. In fact, all of Goodsprings more-or less could be called the "Tutorial", and it does a better job of blending into the game itself than even Fallout 3's, somehow managing to feel compelling, yet entirely unnecessary, where Fallout 3's feels a slight burden of necessity by contrast.

I thought the tutorial in OB was really good, but tutorials should be skippable.

just finish the one you have all they way through, wouldnt that solve the "boring tutorial" hype?
How can a tutorial (which is essential for NEW players, that are new to this kind of game) be boring if you only really play through it a few times?

Not good enough. A game, especially one such as this where replayability is its calling card, can do better than that.
At a very basic start, it could make the tutorial aspect optional, even if the journey through the imperial subterrane still had to be mandatory.

You could end the Goodsprings tutorial at any time after leaving the doctor's house. In fact the powder gangers quests were easier to do if you skipped out after killing the gecko's at the wells then going back to take care of things in Goodsprings.

I thought that the Tutrorial in Oblivion was fun but a chore to do over if I just wanted to make another character, or if I didn't like the one I was playing once I got outside.

I have faith that Skyrim's tutorial will be quick and painless, unlike the executioner's axe I'm sure. I just hope escaping doesn't automatically make me the enemy of a powerful faction of the game.

Maybe we are freed by accident during a dragon attack. We'll find out.
