the story

I was just wondering why the big jump time wise? I mean the book made it evident that some pretty major things have been going on since oblivion, first we have the collapse of the Empire itself, then you have a bandit king come along and take the imperial city and start to rebuild the empire, war in the provinces, then this mt. comes flying out of oblivion turning people into ? zombies? I mean comeon why the big jump when within 30 yrs we have like 3 games we could be playing?

I am not complaining, just wondering what does it mean , it always means something, Bethesda knows, what are we missing here?

I believe that during the game, as we find more about lore we will understand why it was necessary this long jump.

I wouldn't mind books in game that talk about events that happened in the Infernal City. I would love to see a Battlespire/Redguard type game that takes place during those events.

TES has never really been about continuing the story arc between games, I've always thought of it as each game just being part of the overall lore.

I like big jumps, I like hearing about what happened while I was absent from Nirn.

Could be a part of it, yet skyrim is still within the same borders it has enjoyed for 300 yrs at least so that cant be the entire answer even if a part of it

I was hoping for a story for Skyrim that was very in the moment instead of being based on a huge history of something or the other that you discover slowly in the game. If you set up a big bad in the games like Morrowind and Oblivion, you know that you will knock them down and win in the end. If you go with a game based on current politics and events like Daggerfall, you don't know who will win in the end. I very much wanted Skyrim to be about the civil war, and the faction that emerged from the fighting would lead the push for a new empire, but all that is the background in the new game in favor of dragon slaying. I'll play it and all, but guess what! The player's team will win! Like always...

Big jumps are good. Excluding The Fable serious( Look what such a great game turned into). Its sort of like a new chapter in the TES series.(according to Todd)

Because of the events we know about during that period aren't that great of stories to base a game around.

I imagine the real answer is so that they can establish some good 4th era lore to learn about why we play the game.

Apparently none of them are great stories to base a game around, as we have skipped them all in the timeline.

On another note, that rock which makes zombies is a large kitchen island. I don't know how that would make a good game or book. It hasn't yet.

I can actually see being indifferent to the fall of the empire as well it fell guess we would have been ineffective against it as it is a forgone conclusion I guess, but the other 2,...... ? they woulda been Epic !

Exactly, I didn't even know that Morrowind and Oblivion happened just years apart until a few months back when I heard the stuff about St Jiub. I wish he could have been born a couple decades before me though. Driving the cliff racers from Vvardenfell is EPICNESS

Wow, that is an interesting summary of The Infernal City =)

Agreed. When I found out it was going to be 160 years after the events of surrounding Umbriel I was a little shocked. I think all of this is to give the series a bit of a new direction. Sort of like a face lift for the lore, maybe a way to make it a little less Tolkien in a way. BTW I'm just speculating so nobody bite my head off here. At least now we have Dragons!

Thank you. I aim to an eloquent orator and a funny guy all the same.

I am wondering now if maybe I am way off on my assumptions. Perhaps 200 years is long enough for the "Dark Ages" to have passed. Not that we will be seeing any Renaissance happening in Skyrim (at least I don't think so), but perhaps the technology has gotten better. I am suddenly reminded of Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. I remember that the main city in that game was sort of split in half. One half used magick and the other used technology such as steam engines. Since the Dwemer were adept at mechanization it is not unreasonable to think that there might be things such as flying machines in the game. I still prefer the idea of riding a dragon though. I'm getting obsessed with dragons for some reason. Gonna play Dragon Age now.

I just don't see the main quest being all that substantial for a game dealing with the events of Infernal City, Other than having you collect ingredients for a flying potion to get to Umbriel, then fighting to destroy it or send returning it back to Oblivion.

The likely reason has already been said, to give us plenty of history in the 4th Era.

Perhaps they simply wanted to be able to make a new Pocket Guide for the Collectors Edition, but realized that there was nothing new to say in it. Now, we can get that, plus 200 years worth of new books in-game.

I really dont see tech as being a factor as the dwarfs dont exist anymore ( or shouldnt according to lore as we know it now), and tech improvements arent really a TES thing lol

I___That.

Each elderscrolls game is another chapter, or another prophesy being fulfilled. The PC is usually a man or woman who is pulled toward a greater destiny, possibly by the intervention of greater forces which could not be fathomed nor conceived by mortal minds. And each of these prophesies brings about a pivotal change for that region's history

They might have such a large time jump, because they plan on making one of the expansion packs a prequel.
