The Strangest Lag

Post » Tue Dec 21, 2010 2:36 am

Hey everyone! I have the strangest problem i've ever experienced in Oblivion! Only Outdoors and in first person, my game has the strangest lag! The game itself does not lag at all, (ie creatures and everything's fine) but it seems almost like my character is! I run for a while and it's fine and then all the sudden i'm slowed to a crawl. and then i try to look up/turn around and the noticeable lag persists! It's very hard to explain, and the only way to really understand is to play it (which is of course impossible). I know i probably won't get any answers, but i'll try my hand anyway! Thanks in advance to any advice!

And of course here's my load order:

You could always try something drastic and disable all mods to see if the problem still persists (this will not screw up your save as long as you don't save it again without mods). If the lag is gone you know it is mod related, and it might help solve the problem.

Alright, will try that! Thanks! :)

EDIT: Nope... if its not mod related then what could be the problem...? :(

Possibly the animation bomb? Try going to the saves tab in Bash, right click, select "repair abomb" and once it's done load that save up and see what happens.

Also check if you haven't got any joysticks plugged in. They can interfere with your controls to make you slow-mo moonwalk.

Try changing "buse joystick=1" to "buse joystick=0" in your Oblivion.ini (My Documents\My Games\Oblivion).

Do you use Oblivion Stutter Remover?, just sounds a bit like OSR induced slo-mo when things get too system heavy

Well I suggested it as a potential cause of what you are experiencing if you had the settings pushing your machine too much combined with the amount of mods you have versus your machines capabilities.... if you are not using it then that is ruled out as a cause.

Whether you should use it or not and would it help your problem? - Possibly, have a read http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23208

Needs a bit of study and knowledge of your machine, and needs you to be using OBSE http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1113709-relz-oblivion-script-extender-obse-0018

Though I would try and resolve what this problem is first - I have no further ideas at the moment, sorry :(

Hmm just had a search around the ether but cant spot anything similar. This topic has had some well experienced noses popped in too... The only other suggestion I have you will probably have thought of is the painfull one - Rewind your installation to a point when all was fine. Depends on the complexity of what you have installed recently, method of installation, and how far back you have had the problem. But if no-one has any light bulbs, it might be the only way. Sometimes one mod can be the straw that breaks the donkeys back.

Edit: Or, any recent windows installations which may have a background service slowing things down occasionally?

I haven't been playing for about a month now so i can't be positive but i'm almost certain that this has never happened before! It started a few days ago when i started playing again. i've already taken out everything that i've installed in the last few days (which really was just Hentai Mania 2...) I have no idea what to do about it! I think i'm just going to have to live with it or *gulp* reinstall... :o

EDIT: seems a new problem has emerged!
I can see the border of the window (ie a thin blue strip) on the left and top of the screen! Wonder if this is part of my original problem...

Try temporarily turning/forcing off vsync and anti-aliasing in both game settings and driver settings. Also if you use a program like nhancer or ATI tray tools disable it. Does that make a difference?

And thanks to everyone who replied! Now i kindly ask a Mod to lock this now unnecessary thread!

That's great! Just want to add I think the issue was from a custom shader not playing nice with one of those 2 settings. Turning off esps doesn't necessarily disable custom shaders. You could experiment further to figure out what caused the conflict if you want vsync or anti-aliasing on.

Vsync seems to be working fine but AA's not...
And I really really want to use AA! But i don't know what would be causing the problem...

All I'm using is screen effects because I have to for weather all natural...

The newer versions of All Natural don't require screen effects. What version of All Natural are you using? I think screen effects was no longer required starting with Beta 0.9.6 - you should update to version 1 regardless.

If that's the only mod you have that requires it I would try uninstalling screen effects completely using OBMM. Check if AA works after doing that. If not post back with a content list or screenshot of your Oblivion\Data\Shaders folder.

P.S. I'm not very familiar with screen effects - I think uninstalling it might cause the game to crash if other mods are dependent on it but I'm not sure. Just don't panic if you try and it happens.
