the stupidness of imperial guards

Post » Mon Aug 31, 2009 3:59 pm

have you noticed it always only seems to be the imperial guards who fall off things and get stuck?

here is an example
i was in ebonheart and i attacked a guard on the battlements, i then jumped out of his reach and what does he say? he says "HELP GUARDS"

has anybody else noticed this?

I think that's mainly because the Imperial guards are the only guards that are standing up on the walls and stuff, Redoran, Hlaalu and Telvanni only have to walk in simple cities and such, Imperials always end up on walls and things that don't have a lot of space for them to walk on, and the game presumably can't quite calculate that into the walk order.

I don't seem to recall ever hearing a guard call out "Help, Guards."
But what's so weird about that? He's calling for back-up.

Also... why is that an example of how Imperial guards get stuck and/or fall?

[RP] Tread lightly, citizen.... My current charcter just made Knight of the Imperial Dragon, and probably wouldn't have much difficulty coming down from the battlements for a... personal conversation... regarding your slander. [/RP]

tee hee.

On one of my characters I have an Imperial Guard that got stuck in the fence just outside the south gate of Caladara. He killed the diseased Alits that hang out near there for me when I was a low lvl. I left him there for personal protection. I have more of a problem with the Silt Strider Drivers falling off of their platforms or getting stuck halfway in them.

The crappy AI and pathfinding means that just about any NPC on a raised platform will eventually fall off it. Imperial guards, silt strider operators... even the dancers in Desele's House of Delights.

The other day I saw a Guard go marching resolutely out of Seyda Neen in a straight line almost pure north, and he just kept going, even swimming across two lakes. He didn't stop to say anything to me when I got close, just walked around me. I followed him all the way to the ashlands south of Fort Moonmoth, where he got stuck on some rocks. I wish I'd had a 'Levitate on Touch' spell or something, see where he ended up. The route he was taking might just have had him taking a dive into Red Mountain.

No AI in the world fails as spectacularly and amusingly as the Elder Scrolls AI when it does occasionally fail.

Maybe throwing themselves off walls or repeatedly walking into solid objects is part of their training!? You know like, toughening themselves up for fights with DElves & Nords, that kind of thing?

Incidentally, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=1095 does a really good job of stopping NPCs getting stuck on things or repeatedly walking into them, though it doesn't seem to stop them occasionally spectacularly falling off things.

The Guards you hire in Oblivion for the Battlehorn Castle are especially stupid. If I hang around there for any length of time at least one a day hurtles himself off the battlements into the courtyard. I think their AIs were designed to imitate someone with brains formed out of wet Kleenex. Either that or there's a serial killer loose I don't know about.
