Is the system requirements high?

Post » Fri Sep 18, 2009 6:26 am

I just wondered if the system requirements is going to be high. Not what they exactly is going to be.
I want to know if I must begin to save some money for new specs

No one knows...but Im guessing they will be fairly high, you'll probably need direct x10 support

I doubt they'd make it a DX10 exclusive game.

System Reqs. have not been released and probably won't be for a few months.

And we can't use previous games as a reference because this is a completely new engine.

Considering it's a new engine and there has been nothing but praise about the look from the developers and those that have seen the game, I would say they will be high. We won't really have an idea until we at least see some screen shots.

I mean at least Direct x10...I doubt you could play on 9, but I would be happy if I'm proven wrong

It will function on Direct x 9 (It works on existing consoles). I just hope it has Direct x 11 capabilities!!!

Assume "yes," what was passable for Oblivion will likely be not-recommended for Skyrim.

Fine by me, I was looking for an excuse to plug in a new GPU as it was.

Personally I think it's very likely that the PC specs are high.

Well I'm hoping that they've optimized this engine better than the previous one.

I will be happy if I can have it look as nice as Oblivion but run super smooth; it would seriously svck to have the game look worse than Oblivion just to be playable, that would be horrible.

Newer better engine should mean smoother and nicer graphics with less strain on the system.

I'm not expecting to play it on high settings on my current rig though, but I'm expecting at least Oblivion quality with better performance.

Considering the recent trend, where games look great, but don't improve by leaps and bounds like they did around 2004-2008, the system req's are probably met by a computer that can run New Vegas, Mass Effect 2, Bad Company 2, or Black Ops.

I have been running a Quad 6600 with 8800GTS 512mb and XP for the longest time here. Mass Effect 2 and Black Ops and other games all run maximum at 1680x1050.
I bet TESV Skyrim might just be too much though. Same with Oblivion 5 years ago. The game was a struggle to run at max because of the huge scale the game is set in.

You don't seem to know too much, because those games all have different requirements, especially Battlefield: Bad Company 2 which is a DX11 game.

Eh, probably not that bad. Im more so anticipating that the new engine will be better equiped and optimized to run faster.

I reliable source told me that if you can run Arena, you have high chances of running Skyrim, just adjusting a few thing s to 'medium' instead of highest.

So, by all means, start saving now....

There is an added cost in creating different graphics environments and multitudes of textures for the images. Development costs are relatively high, and most developers are going multi-platform, so there is in effect a Dx9 "Cap" on graphics if the economies of parallel development are followed on a normal basis. There is leeway for better looking Dx9 graphics than have been offered by Bethesda so far, exactly the way that only using the SM2 pixel shaders, the original Oblivion with the Gamebryo graphics engine still set standards for all 3D video games.

The only way I can imagine that Dx10 level video might appear is if there already are specifications for whatever comes after Xbox360 and PS3 that the Skyrim code can already have included, before those systems appear. I cannot imagine, however, that such specifications' mere existence wouldn't already be rumored in the gaming press.

Well, they can't be too high since 360 and PS3 are running on a very old hardware by now. I think it depends on how well it will be optimised on the pc.
I'm eager to see gamaplay videos or at least screenshots since it will be a deciding factor for whether or not I'm getting a job this summer :P

Probably a pretty darn decently sized set of requirements.

As people have said, it still has to run on modern consoles, this means dx9 support and a 'low' setting that dips pretty far. I would imagine requirements not much higher than New Vegas. For minimums likely a dual core, 2gb ram, a dx9 capable video card, (probably gforce 7 or 8 series minimum), MAYBE dx10, but I doubt it, and the operating system of your choice. Those are pretty standard modern requirements for games released across all three platforms.

Whatever engine they are using for ESV, whether it's a new version of Gamebryo, id Tech 5, or a new engine altogether, it has been written to run on the current generation of consoles. Hopefully (and probably) there will be an additional set of resources for the PC version allowing for higher resolution textures, and advanced shaders, tessellation, etc. made possible with Direct X 11 hardware.

At base level, though, the game will need to run smoothly on the current generation of consoles, so there is no way that it will require a Direct X version higher than 9.0c. I'd be very surprised if the minimum system requirements for the PC version aren't quite modest. To run the PC version with all settings maxed you'll probably need a pretty quick PC with a Direct X 11 video card, but how extensively they will be able to utilize all that Direct X 11 offers is tough to say ... so far all the games that have come out that make really good use of Direct X 11 (it's a very short list) have been PC exclusives, which unfortunately Skyrim is not.

Whatever the case, I am waiting until next year to upgrade. I predict the new engine is highly scalable, and console bottlenecks will not be a hindrance to it's progress on PC.
