I guess in your opinion, you could say that Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Georgia O'Keefe, Frida Kahlo, among others, simply couldn't paint.

They couldn't paint, that's why they went all modernist to pretend they could.

I'm terrible at examples. I like Wind's half-arsed definition of talent.

Edit:

Actually, I can argue on your example. People call him "talented" because they like what he did with it. Is he really talented? Does he have a higher understanding of the concept of art, and the way the human brain reacts to it? No. He threw a bucket of paint at a canvas and hoped for the best. He doesn't have talent. However, the people who are looking at the painting may not realize this, and just find that it does indeed appeal to them. In that case he's not talented, he's just lucky.

Exactly. People call it talent because it appeals to them. That means that in their opinion he has talent. That means talent is subjective. And just because someone has an understanding of something does not make them talented.

I like a good amount of her songs, yes. She has a lot of bad songs, but a lot of really, really catchy songs, and those are what I listen to.

People on this forum, and elsewhere, are quick to judge people based on their taste in music, so let me just state that the music on my MP3 player varies widely in terms of genre and no one song defines what type of music I like. In fact, I'll listen to practically any genre under the sun, from jazz to heavy metal to pop, if I like a particular song in the genre enough. Just because someone likes Lady Gaga doesn't mean they're a drooling idiot who only likes pop music.

At least, I wish that that is what she sings there. It's not of course, but when I put it like this it sure sounds like it, doesn't it? :D

What's disturbing is that she pronounces Morrowind so perfectly! Hell I can't even pronounce it that properly when I say it in conversation. The more I listen to her say it the more convinced I am that she really is saying Morrowind and just said she was saying "my room" to trick people.

Talent as I see it is the natural ability to excel at something. i.e two people with the same amount of practice at drawing try and copy a photo of the same person. One draws a fairly realistic version, the other draws a stick figure. I don't think that's very subjective.

Same here, Antibody. I listen to Tool to Lil Wayne to ELO to the Beatles. Wow, why is the word "Beatles" flagged as incorrectly spelled on these forums?
Can't judge someone by what type of music they listen to, especially someone with a diverse palette.

So then talent is an immeasurable "x" factor? What if You lliked the version of the stick figure better, does that still mean he has no talent?

Even though some of her songs are catchy ("Poker Face" and certain parts of "Bad Romance", the "roma roma ma" part annoys the hell out of me), her whole image is just repulsive. She tries too hard.

I like Wind's half-arsed definition of talent.

My dictionary gives me this definition for talent:"The natural endowments of a person."

I'd say my definition was the same thing worded differently, the dictionary's description is a bit more vague considering endowments just means traits/abilities but I don't really see how it was "half-arsed".

But regardless my point still stands, practice doesn't make talent.

Yes, because he's not naturally gifted at drawing. That goes exactly along with my argument "Talent is not open to opinion, but the use of that talent is." You just happen to like it better. That's your opinion. Are you telling me a stick figure is more impressive, and requires more ability than an almost photo-realistic sketch?

There are just some things about the human body we don't fully get. Some things just click easier for some.

But who decides what amount of ability constitutes "talent"? Therein lies the subjectivity.

I quite like some of her music, I even have a couple on one of my playlists.

One thing for sure, she is considerably more successful at what she does than those sitting behind their computers criticizing her. Good luck to the girl, she has found a niche in the music scene, lots of people do like her and I hope she continues.

Didn't read all the comment yets, but she has talent. Can you say the same for Britney Spears and girls like her? At least she can dance, and sing, and she sings live, no lip syncing for her unlike others and Madonna.

Not really,I'm not saying you can never be awesome at drawing even if you svck at it when you start.

I'm just saying talent is used far too much,I don't think it's fair to say anyone who has practiced the piano enough to play it well is a talented musician, they're just someone who practiced the piano.

Work in a music school for a few years or even just visit one every now and then and this will be obvious, there are the kids who pick an instrument up and just do it then there are kids that have motivation but struggle.

@ Orochi, yeah I thought endowment was a really strange word..but it's what my dictionary used.

I don't have access to my copy of Webster's dictionary right now, when I get home I'll see what the definition of talent is in that.

We could have had that but we got another pop-diva? Awww....

I do like "Just Dance". "Poker Face" and "Bad Romance" are meh and everything is bad. It's on my playlist for my party music, but that's cause everyone else loves it.

The "shock factor" is also gone. "Bad Romance" was like "Woah, googly eyes and then the dude's electrocuted. Crazy." But it's worn on me and "Alejandro" was just another "Oh look, Lady Gaga doing something out of the ordinary."

It isn't an opinion. It is fact. She is talented at playing the piano. I guess in your opinion, you could say that Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Georgia O'Keefe, Frida Kahlo, among others, simply couldn't paint.
No, you're wrong, you just don't like their talent. (if you were to say that)

The other day:

That, ladies and gentlemen, is what we call a personal opinion!
All together now!
Personal......Opinion!
I don't see why people flaunt their own personal opinions as facts honestly.
"FPS's are just bad altogether!"
^That statement may be someone's opinion, but it's certainly not true.

It just means the other guy has more talent. But again that is subject to peoples tastes, some will like rha stick figure more and some won't. I agree that some are more talented then others but that talent is based on your opinion.

Yeah, that's all I know about her. Thank you, roflrazzi and totallylookslike! Otherwise, I would still have not even a clue what was going on in pop culture today.
