Just working my way through finishing up the details for Dark Cave. Once all the things are set up I can create the navmesh and start adding the NPCs. I'll see if I can find time to post a few more screenshots of it later on.

Here we go - http://sites.google.com/site/taloncompanymod/pictures/DarkCaveEatingArea.bmp?attredirects=0

Now finished navmeshing and cluttering Dark Cave, which I've renamed Lynx Cave, mostly because I've changed the lighting around to try and get more atmosphere, which in turn makes the cave not particularly dark. It also changes the look of the place quite significantly compared to what it currently is in the screenshots. I'm tossing up whether to stay with the current lighting scheme which gives things a more yellow tint (I'm using it because of the HDR settings that make the lamps appear to be shining brightly), and using the traditional bluish cave lighting.

Anyway the next thing to do is to fill it with the NPCs who will inhabit the cave, then sort out their dialogue, script movements in the cave, and finally tie everything together. Then I'm also going to have to decide whether to keep on going or to make it an open beta to get bug reports. I'm not generally a fan of quest mods that make an early initial release and then try and add a bit more on later and later, but in this case since there are so many possible variables I think I'll need a large group of beta testers to catch all the bugs in the possible permatations.

Awesome.

To be frank i was extremely disappointed that you couldn't ignore the main fallout quest and be part of a raider or a talon merc faction with its own separate quest line etc. It was a fundamental shift from oblivion and Morrowind where you could be whoever you wanted to be and had dialogue and quests to support your choice.

This mod will be one of the first to address this fundamental missing feature. The slaver mods and a admirable but incomplete join the raiders mod being the only others i can think of

As a experienced modder im sure you have already planned all your quest lines etc however i think it might be worth while reading this fan fiction.

Its the best story set in the fallout world i have ever read. It captures the mood of the wastes perfectly and describes the brutality and survival of the fittest mentality embedded in citizens of a destroyed world. The 2nd part talks about the talon company and its role in the wastes. The fan fic is long and divided into two parts. It taken me 5 hours to read the story and im about 90% through so its actually a novel as opposed to a short story. check it out here

Part 1 - http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5155568/1/Fallout_Child_of_Atom
Part 2 - http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5430782/1/Child_of_Atom_2_The_Raptors_of_Ronto
(warning the story is fairly brutal in parts, so its not something I recommend children reading)

Really looking forward to this mod !

And here I make use of my new found video editing skills. It's a walkthrough of Lynx Cave so you can see what it currently looks like. I'd be interested in getting some feedback on what people think of the lighting scheme and general amount of clutter before I start populating it.

checked out the video.

You have clearly put alot of thought and effort into the cave layout. It looks like something that would be fun to explore.

Re the lighting. I think you could make it a little darker and try to have a greater contrast between the light and dark areas.
My personel preference for a cave is to have a blend of grey and green as opposed to brown but thats just me. Do u use HDR or bloom?

Re clutter - I think it would be good to break up the earthy colours of the cave itself with some bright clutter, a few red racer toys, roller skates, or even shopping carts could have all washed into the cave system in the last 150 years. Some graffiti (check nexus for some great graffiti mods) would also be a good way to break up the colours.

Some kind of waterfall would also be cool especially if it sparkeled from a light opening above.

Looking excellent. Looking very excellent.

Hopefully this comes to fruition. I'm going to be keeping a very close eye on the progress of this mod. If I'm lucky, my computer will actually be able to RUN Fallout 3 by the time it's finished!

Okay, in this mod, you won't be able to become leader of the faction. Can the player be given the choice of whether he want to be a squad-leader or anything? :P
Like you have responsibility for your squad-members? Can order them to do stuff, etc...

If not, maybe you can become the Leader's right hand? :D

I've changed the lighting around to use the cave light so it looks different. I have had to change some of the lights since the different light set does not cause the lamps to reflect so brightly (Which caused one of them to look light it was off. Personally I use HDR.

Okay, I'll try and some more things like raider grafs and blood to break up the colouring.

Thanks, I'll try and make it as good as I can.

The later part of the questline is still kind of fluid at the moment. I'm still deciding whether I will allow the player to become the leader or only allow them to support the two (or three) other leaders.

There are some interesting features in the film, and I agree that it seems like a lot of thought went into it.
Personally I prefer darker caves, with light coming mostly from visible light sources like lamps or holes in the ceiling etc.

I don't know the purpose of the cave, so maybe it's appropriate with raider d?cor. Don't put decapitated corpses next to wasteland settlers though. ;)

Becoming the leader of a faction did strike me as a little strange in Oblivion, and it seems to me that it should take up a lot more time than just collecting your earnings every week. Settling for a high rank, and keeping your independence, feels like a better fit for the Lone Wanderer.

You could post a similiar post like this on http://thenexusforums.com.. You'd get more attention, you may even get help! ;)
I think TheNexusForums have more members than the gamesas-forums...

The number of posts are comparable, and in my experience you get more useful feedback on the gamesas forums. However, the Nexus forums have more features. (like IMAGES! grr)
The huge difference in members is probably due to large files requiring a registration before downloading.

It suppose couldn't hurt though.

I'll probably be making a thread on the Nexus forums once I have the first of the introductory quests completed and bug free as I can get it. That way there will be something very big that I can show people there when I do it. I'm just continuing to work my way through it slowly and tying up all the loose threads (of which there are many).

Maybe you should get someone to help you... My advice is to post a post on TheNexusForums informing them about your mod, and asking for help! ;)

I haven't been able to work on it so much over the past few days, but I did have a friend over to my place and showed him what I had done. He said the dialogue was 'better' than Bethesda's dialogue, so I know I'm heading in the right direction.

No, still moving through slowly slowly. It's hard to mod when you are studying multiple degrees and working at the same time, but it isn't abandoned.

I've got a little video illustrating some of the dialogue and voice work by yours truly, if anyone would like to comment upon the voicework and dialogue in general then please do so. All the multiple threads of the quest that I am working on are finally coming together. I don't know if I will ever try and do such a complex multi-pathed quest again - it's just been that difficult to work through.

Here's the link to the video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoCbeZDvu2w
