The terrain of Skyrim

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:09 am

I got an idea, by looking at the map i'd say that 30-40 % of the map is mountainous, where there are mountains there is usually snow, or a rugged alpine climate, but what if landscaping extended to underground as well, what if the nords of skyrim decided to tunnel underground as well, admittedly your map (GHE) does give some relief, however it is still largely apline and tundra, could we have more climate and landscape differences if they went underground as well?

That actually would be interesting, although I don't think there is anything like that in the lore.
But I think there should be extensive mines in Skyrim, where Nords would mine for ebony and other such materials to make Nordic axes and other weapons. There could even be a "Miners Guild", but now I'm getting off topic. The mines would hopefully (plz Bethesda) be in the same cell as the rest of the would.

I think 30% are mountainous and another 50% highlands.
The idea of an extra underground world would be quite nice, though difficult to implement.

Personally I see the Falmer as the real dwarves of the TES universe, though without the beard etc. I assume their cities would be underground for the biggest part in the higher regions. If you then connect these up with mine tunnels made by the Nords, you have a nice underground world.
The dungeon-like Falmer ruins would then either be unpatrolled and ruined Falmer cities or the sewers and their extent of used ones.
Just thinking out loud.

Well as long as the terrain is different than cyrodills.

As in the first pic, I would really like to see pine forests in Skyrim.

This is probably going to be locked because it "should be discussed on the official thread", but oh well worth a try...

So Cyrodiil's terrain was for the most part rolling meadows and such; pretty easy to get from A to B. Vvardenfell was smaller than Cyrodiil but felt bigger because it's difficult terrain made it difficult to traverse the province

Most maps of Tamriel just suggest mountains scattered about, but of course the specifics aren't set in stone. I personally think there should be a massive mountain range cutting through Skyrim (either east-west or north-south). Oblivion had mountains but they were pretty small, and if you ever reached the top, you would have to just turn around because you couldn't go down the other side. In Skyrim this mountain range would provide a really cool obstacle that you would have to travel through in order to get to the other half of the province. And there should be multiple mountain passages with dangerous creatures that would make it difficult to get through for low level characters.

That's just my idea, what are your's?

I always tried to think of why I liked Morrowind's world better than Oblivion's. You pretty much just explained it for me. Morrowind felt more dangerous, and high fantasy, Oblivion was a lot of the same. I didn't like Oblivion's compass either, I liked looking at Morrowind's awesomely detailed pack-in map to navigate my way around the world. Everything you described, I would love to see. (Bethesda, please make TES V's map similar to Morrowind, not Oblivion!)

Mhm. I really want Skyrim to feel more dangerous and hostile. When I went exploring in oblivion, I always felt safe and at home, because I could always see at least one of the cities in the distance. When I go adventuring in Skyrim I want to actually feel a sense of danger; because, after all, I am in the wilderness in the midst of wild beasts. That would make the safe places, that is the towns and cities, much more valuable.

Exacly!!!

One of the reasons that cyrodill felt small, was that you always could see white gold tower from anywhere, and you never felt lost in the wilderness. More hills and mountains in the middle of the province would help to "cover" the cities, instead of only at the border, as in oblivion.

Skyrim fits perfectly for that, though you never know.

The fact that the entire landscape felt rounded in OB made for a large portion of the safe feeling. If the ground is more jagged, with cliffs and sharp mountains, it will already be a lot better.
Then visibility could be hindered by low hanging clouds or the dense pine forest you happen to wander.

Real Time Seasons
Winter should be snow white EVERYWHERE.
Spring should be white in high areas but no snow in low areas.
Summer should have no snow except in very high areas.
Autumn (known as fall in America) Should be white for half the time, but a reddy white usually.

Yes that would be great for the game but i wonder how it would affect the NPC's behavior

I would love steep mountain ranges that force you to take narrow, twisting paths down into misty valleys filled with hot springs and lush green vegetation, eclipsed by the massive elevations around you. Something similar to Entius Gorge for Oblivion.

Here's what worries me:

I do NOT want anywhere in TESV to be like downtown DC in FO3. I do NOT want to have to take a network of caves to get from point A to point B like the godforsaken metro tunnels in FO3. Seriously, never again.

Lofty mountain ranges may sound nice, but I'd rather they keep them mostly along the borders of the map. If I have to frequently navigate mountain passes or caves to get around, it's only going to make the environments more annoying (especially if all the caves look the same, in true Bethesda fashion).

Generally, while I think Skyrim itself is an interesting place culturally, as far as tarrain goes I wonder how much could possibly be left to the imagination between Solstheim and Bruma...

Either way, copy and paste the info into your browsers - You'll get the jist of what I mean.
