The terrain of Skyrim

Some pics of Iceland, a land though of as mainly being snow and mountains but containing some stunning, varied vistas. Bethesde take note -

I love those pictures.

Mainly because of the gameplay ramifications. Think about the challenges of crossing an icy fjord full of chasms, or a hot geyser field that could practically boil you alive.

And that first picture? That's just plain beautiful. I can't help but want to see that in a TES game.

I know exactly what you mean re gameplay - The combination of the lands barren beauty and near constant threat of incomming danger could work wonders within the world of the Elder Scrolls :)

Iceland has always been one of them places I would kill to go to. Who knows, one day eh?

Here's what worries me:

I do NOT want anywhere in TESV to be like downtown DC in FO3. I do NOT want to have to take a network of caves to get from point A to point B like the godforsaken metro tunnels in FO3. Seriously, never again.

Lofty mountain ranges may sound nice, but I'd rather they keep them mostly along the borders of the map. If I have to frequently navigate mountain passes or caves to get around, it's only going to make the environments more annoying (especially if all the caves look the same, in true Bethesda fashion).

I know what you mean and understand your concern. The problem with the downtown DC areas of F3 was it was split into dozens of sections all in different cells. Because of this the compass didn't guide you the right way and it made navigating though DC frustrating. If bethesda keeps everything in one worldspace it would pretty much fix that.

I feel likewise. When but one of a dozen vampire clans may tear through the ice you are standing on and drown you, you just have to pack prepared.

so here's hoping they make "it" work

Speaking of that, it would be really cool to have frozen lakes with breakable ice, but it probably won't happen...

Hey, you never know. So long as it's on random patches of frozen water (so you don't just avoid it) and it's not over-done (so it becomes tiresome) it could be great. Keep the player on their toes at least :)

Could easily be done via collision detection alongside a timer (you're on the ice for and bad things happen), having a preset "breaking" animation complete with already sectioned-off pieces, and then use euphoria or improved Havok physics to do the rest.

Someone said Alaska. That is pretty similar to what Skyrim should look. A few more moutains though.

I'm not a tech-head but that sounds about right to me.

PS: Maybe they should also implement another bar - along with the standard one that shows how much oxygen you have remaining - that depletes as you spend more time within the frozen depths? Argonians may be able to breathe within the ice cold water but I'm betting their balls shrivel as quick as the next mans at those temperatures. :D

i think you mean resistance to the cold, how would that work, would it be affected by frost shield or resistance to frost?

You have to be proficient in any blade skill and have a corresponding weapon on hand, and then you get to carve up the corpse dead furry creatures and use their pelts for warmth.

Someone was trying to pass http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/609/elderscrollsvshadowsofsfx1.jpg off as a screenshot from TESV, and I believe it most accurately conveys Skyrim's climate. That is if you haven't seen it already.

Nobody would really think that's a TES V screenshot, would they? Bethesda doesn't make rocks that detailed - they make wrinkly bumpmapped grey blobs and then scatter them all over the terrain. :stare:

Hahahaha

That's certainly an old hoax copy. Look at the file name; "elderscrollsvshadowsofsf" Haha. That's the old, completely unfounded and shot down in just a few weeks, rumor that TES V would be called TES V: Shadows of Oblivion or something ridiculous like that.

As for the screenshot itself, it looks pre-rendered (or just plain rendered).

addendum: Only there would totally be no warning, as their phantom arms reach through the ice itself.

and shot down in just a few weeks

that long, huh?

And let you create temporary ice by using Frost spells on water.

While a hoax I'd LOVE it if it'd look anyway near like this.

Its naturally so cold, the ice forms instantaneously.

If it has fou of the five highest peaks I reckon you should as least have some blindingly cold peaks that affect you like Frostfire glade did OB. But not to that extreme.

I kind of picture it like these:

http://misslizz.deviantart.com/art/Skyrim-River-Valley-137419529 Tall mist-shrouded mountains, thick blanket of trees, rushing water sparkling like a strand of diamonds in the sun. This would probably one of the more temperate places in the land. Other images like this have been posted, much better than my version, but, meh, I wanted to contribute.
http://misslizz.deviantart.com/art/Skyrim-Coast-scribbles-137420122 One rocky and treacherous with stinging wind and salt-spray, the other not as craggy but still not the safest place to take a stroll without your wits about you.

Well, I mean, I'd rather like roaming through these locations. Heavens knows what you'd run into, vampires, bandits, trolls, a house made out of cookies...
