The textures are abysmal

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 8:29 pm

It has everything to do with hardware limitations. You can hide ugly textures by fancy FX or improve them slightly by doing that horrible streaming thing, but you can't fit more than 512 mb into a 512 mb memory pool. Period.
From that perspective, yes of course. I'm saying that the way you program you can make more efficient use out of that 512MB. I can write a program that completely hogs up a high end machine but does nothing at all. It just means its badly written software. There's ways to circumvent limited hardware. Bethesa chose to tone down the textures. Sure, that's one way to do it.

Yes, textures are [censored]. Maybe beth should release the full sized, uncompressed textures they made for the game? Im sure they are not so stupid to have made 1024x1024 and 512x512 textures...Would be amazing if they did. Can't imagine, just fail, epic fail.

Release the 4096x4096 textures beth, do it, do it now!

Snow looks like someone unloaded on my screen.

(I guess Ill have to piece a texture pack together LOL because beth def won't release the full res textures they probably didn't make...)

Stop crying man. Textures on the PC look good by default. Sure, they could be even better, but saying they are crap is ridiculous.

The adbox version looks much better. The frame rate is higher. Its more stable. The adbox version is overall a better game. I own an adbox and a ps3.

The reason for the blurry textures on the ps3 is due to the method of anti-aliasing being used. The adbox is using anti-aliasing as well but the type it uses doesn't blur the textures.

I only have 1GB v-ram so I'm not sure if the HD would work on my rig. I'm currently running on Ultra+ (.ini tweaked) and getting good performance but I think thats because this game is heavy on the CPU and not the GPU, because my GPU is proably the weakest component in my rig (Radeon 5870 1GB). Is it possible to use only the snow textures from the HD mod? Or is it an installer and not a zip full of textures?

I have a 5850 1Gb and pretty much all in-game textures replaced with HD replacements (including "Skyrim HD - 2K Textures"). Runs without any trouble and improves the visual quality a lot.

oh jeeth chrise this rocks are so UGLY look how UGLY this snow is oh em gee i think ill catch the ugly its so icky

Normally I'm not a graphics snob either, but in a world that you're suppose to be immersed in; graphics are very important. I understand compatibility issues (Yes, I do hold some sympathy for consolers') need to be considered, but can't that be taken care with sliders and option menus?

The bad textures happened because of Bethesda caring to much about consoles...
They are very limited and stuff

I can picture xboxes and ps3's exploding if they went with detailed snow.

There really just needs to be a texture pack that does NOTHING but replace the low end res textures with textures that fit in line with the rest. Not all of us want/need/can use 2k-3k res textures on every freaking object, seeing as 90% of gpu's use 1gb of vram, 2k textures on everything is limited only to the 10% of users. (Default textures use only 500-600mb of vram, so there is easily room for fixing just the worst textures.)

I 100% agree! We need a mod that addresses the low res textures... Not ones that merely improve textures that already look good!!!

It's like you people forget what kind of game Skyrim is.

It's an RPG, and even still, it's an open-world RPG.

It's not going to look as good as battlefield 3, a game that has corridor gameplay, small areas, and physics only applied to a few objects.

It's not going to look as good as whitcher 2, a game that pretty much has *no* physics and is also quite linear.

Arg, it's like you people don't get it, if you wanted a cinematic experience every ten feet Skyrim would be a 25 gb game.

Can`t really say the game looks horribly ugly. People are just overreacting.
Sure, it could be better, but that could be said about a damn large amount of games.

But I ám glad there`s a group of people who, instead of whining how "ugly" this game looks, go `n make a high res texture pack instead. ^^
Gonna try it out as soon as the game`s officially patched for larger memory use.

it's a huge free roaming open world
ofcourse some of the textures aren't up to par with most other small linear gameworlds
but to say they're ugly is just stupid
and to say they're no better than morrowind is just going full [censored]

skyrim is one the best looking games I ever played
and I'm not talking polygon count or texture resolution or whatever
I'm talking wooh look at these GORGEOUS vista's with large open plains and beautiful mist covered mountains for you to explore

no game has ever done that

I'm waiting for a mod that doesn't just plop on a photoshop filter.

agreed. i tried a few of the texture packs and unfortunately all it does is accentuate how low res many other textures are. right now im only using a rock texture replacer cause they are just painful to look at. other than that ill wait till a comprehensive pack like qarl's comes out.

overall though im fairly happy with the graphics, im more bugged about limited number of PCs and stuff missing that was in fallout 3 and new vegas.

I still play battlefield 3 a lot (on ultra), so going from that to skyrim is a little sad :P

Same here on my PS3. Don't really see what the OP sees.

all you have to look at is the user picture, unchanted 3 , great graphics.

i was playing crysis 2 just before skyrim and had the same feeling until i remembered how big the world of skyrim is

The shadows bothers me a little, but I play on reduced settings. I guess I've seen better textures, but I still enjoy what I get. As long as I can enjoy the game, graphics doesn't really bother me.

Textures are, more often than not, awful.
On the other hand, shadow resolution is consitently bad.

Snow and water in this game just have no volume and physic. After playing game such has Crysis , Just cause 2 , Hydrophobia are even game like Bioshock ... It's look bad. Probably because of their outdated game engine.
When you dive into it .. It's does not feel like water .. it's feel like something that look like water was painted above your head .

Same with snow .. The ground look like it's was painted white. Where are my footprint? and the volume? The breeze was the only thing that saved Bethesda.

What kind of FPS hit do high res textures give? I have 2.5 gig video RAM but with AO on I'm not sure I can afford many more FPS hits.

That is no excuse to not release a Bethesda texturepack containing the original high res textures for users who want them - See Bioware and Dragon Age 2 texturepack (not the best example but it is one: http://social.bioware.com/page/da2-patches)
