The thieves guild. Most [censored] name of the three?

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 6:29 am

Anyone notice how they kept the most demented name of the three guilds and changed the other two?

Is the mafia called the Thieves Guild? Is there a place called Embezzlement Mart? Have you ever seen a Burglars'R'Us?

On the other hand, legitimate professions (like construction) might be called Anaheim Construction, or a Brickmakers' Guild. Or an auto workers' union. Those make sense.
....
So they changed it to the College of Whispers (ooh nice Bethesda, almost as ominous as the DARK BROOOOTHERHOOOOD), and the....Companions. Like they're male escorts or something.

But they kept the Thieves Guild. Not the Organization. Not the Underground. Even these lame names (that took me 5 seconds to concoct) would have been better than...

THE THIEVES GUILD. :shakehead:

How is that the crappiest name of the Three? They were ALL THREE like this:
The ______ Guild

I'm glad most of them got changed, but they aren't changing the Thieves guild because its still around since we played Oblivion.

You do know that it's not an official guild, chartered by the empire/government, right?
The name is there for irony's sake if you ask me.

And what was wrong with Fighter's and Mage's guild anyway? They're a guild for fighters and mages, makes sense :P
And even you made fun of them how pretentious the new names sound...

How about a well-reasoned (or hell, even slightly reasoned) response as to WHY an illegitimate, illegal organization would advertise themselves literally like that? As I already explained, The ____ Guild archetype at least partially MADE SENSE for mages and mercenaries, but does not for thieves and criminals.

Yet they kept the most egregious one, and lameified the two more reasonable ones.

The College of Whispers is supposed to be "ominous?"

Sweet mother of god, can someone at least read the post until they understand the reasoning behind it before adding ill-though-out "retorts"?

1) Yes. And that is relevant how?

2) Nothing. That's just what I said.

I kind of get what your saying, but your use of the word demented is way off, and it confuses me. Maybe nonsensical or idiotic would make more sense. I think the thieves guild should have an original name that sounds more ominous.

This is better. Yes, I realize it's not literally demented (and neither is Bethesda); it's a slight exaggeration to convey my frustration with their inability to tweak the games for the better.

I am interested to find out if the Gray Fox is still the Guild figurehead. I highly doubt he'd make an appearance in Skyrim. But I am wondering if atleast they'll be references to him in Skyrim.

I wonder who took the mantle of the Gray Fox from Corvus Umbranox if not the pc.

^You probably get the mantle after finishing Sheogorath's quest. :) Think about it.

I an unable to vote, because they all sound equally "demented".
The "generic fighting style" guild. Not very creative or [censored] up in any way. It's not bad, mind you. It's just not creative.

The guild of thieves should either be legendary (Like in Cyrodiil) or sounding like it's something else like the corner club or something.

The Thieves Guild is a guild... that contains thieves.
What's the issue? They have to have a name. You can't just say WELL THEY'RE THEIVES NNNNDD THEY SHOULD HAVE NO NAME, because they need to be named. Anyway, it's more of an unofficial title which they accepted as a title.

Well the theives guild isn't really a guild, your not gonna want to show off the fact your stealing stuff off people. But because its kinda like a big group people just call it the theives guild as a way of saying "have you heard the theives guild stole a giant golden deer."

Threadjack, but whatever, it's interesting.

He probably (and I hope) won't be in the game. He seemed to be localized to Cyrodiil.

This is not legitimate critisism, this is you whining because you don't like the names Bethesda come up with.
Sorry you don't like the names, but complaining because they aren't to your tastes won't solve anything.

I think if some guys got together to form a guild for thieving the last name they would come up with would be "thieves guild". They would pick something scary or secret sounding, something cool. Picking the "thieves guild" sounds as dumb as a business man picking "The Company" for his companies title.

But the idea is that they didn't give themselves the name, the name was given by others, and they adopted it.
If there was a group of people who went around stealing, and they formed a guild, but you didn't know their name, surely "The Thieves Guild" would be an appropriate title?

Nice try, but seriously there are no valid arguments in your Original post as to why the names don't work, all I see is "the names don't work coz I don't like them"
Most of us agree that College of Whispers sounds 100 times better than generic ol' Mages Guild, same with The Companions.
