little piece of trivia, in Halloween, the kids are watching the 1951 The Thing. A little foreshadowing to Carpenter making his version in 82. :)

I don't remember much about The 1951 Thing (apart from that the creature was ridiculous) but I do remember some good dialogue, especially near the start. If you're interested in that sort of style, check out Robert Altman - it's pretty much his trademark.

You missed out my three favourite Carpenter movies (after The Thing); They Live, Prince of Darkness and Assault on Precinct 13. The latter in particular is a masterpiece.

I've heard the remake is pretty decent, but I've still not got round to watching it...

My favourite post-2000 horror, off the top of my head, is Sunshine, which only sort of counts. The Woman in Black seems pretty good too, but I didn't get a chance to watch it to the end yet. Kill List is another of my favourites, but that's another than can only sort of be called a horror movie.

I'm sure I'll think of others soon.

Less paranoia, more shots of monsters and the fancy UFO

Not really bad, they just missed the point

Maybe you're desensitized.

There have been a few scary films:

Audition - OK it's a 1999 film so cheating a bit but it's one hell of a scare.

Ju-on: The Grudge and its sequels

Re-cycle

Into the Mirror

The Eye

A Tale of Two Sisters

One Missed Call 1&2

Reincarnation

The originals mind not the US remakes.

I saw The Thing back when it was released in '82 and don't think any horror film has had such an effect on me. Not even Alien. I could barely walk out of the cinema my legs were so weak with shock. That scene with the dog....if you ever get the chance to see it on the big screen go see it, it's almost overwhelming. Far more so than on a tv screen. Even now it's a film that makes me feel extremely uncomfortable but like all horror films it depends what pushes your particular psychological buttons.

The prequel (not a remake) was OK in parts, particularly liked the scene where we see the genesis of the burnt two headed thing and the way it hunted. But overall it was something of a disappointment with some pretty mediocre CGI.

Love that movie! Didn't actually watch the original nor the latest one, but now I'm intrigued.

i like to see the thing two. recall the monster was just a monster. but it could mimic a human and was intelligent. what was it doing here on earth. was it just hungry and wanted a snack?
