The thing that's been bothering me- rude people

Post » Mon Jan 13, 2014 9:40 am

So, I decided to play skyrim for the first time in months over winter break. I was having a great time, fun to get back, etc. etc...

But then something started to bother me. In the thieves guild, you have the "svck-up dialogue option" or the "Stupid guy" option. Often, you have one, dumb sounding response to which the other (Brynolf, Vex, etc.,etc.) will just say some rude, belittling comment. Short of pulling out my sword and sticking them with it, I can't do anything. Worse is when you have one response, to which the person is just rude, since the only option is stupid. I just stand there near silently as they respond with pointless rudeness. Like Maul the first time you walk in. He's like "Yeah, walk away with your tail between your legs" (not an argonian, stupid) but I can't tell him that, or beat him senseless in a brawl, or do anything to get him to stop acting like my character trailed by a vampire and a couple of Dremora Lords is Joe Shmoe.

I don't like to lie down and take it! So why do I have to in Skyrim?

Because Bethesda says so.

But yes this is an annoying problem you just have to deal with :(

Not just the thieves guild either. Farengar is pretty much a snob as well. I would LOVE to be able to make a snarky comment or three back to them. Rather than have my only option being to kill them. Same with the bratty kids. And I can't even kill them.....

"Do you get to the clou-" YOL TOOR SHUL!

Agreed.

Fallout often had a lot of options to pick from. Guess we can only hope TES: VI has more dialogue options.

For example, when Eltrys in Markarth gives you that note.

Eltrys: "Oh, I think you dropped this. Some kind of note. Looks important."

DB: "keep that damn note and stick it---"

Because the dragonborn was written to be a dumb drunk ignorant nord. Most of his responses should have gotten an "umm" or a (scratching his head), (with a finger up his nose) or (scratching his ass) before the line.

TES doesn't excel much in the PC's own dialogue. Sometimes will the option come up to say something witty and that's about it. Many dialogue choices appeared as the topic itself in previous TES games, such as "Gray Fox" instead of seeing "What can you tell me about the Gray Fox?". I'd say it was like that for role playing reasons or developers didn't think much of it. However, what I've found unique is in the Dark Brotherhood questlines (both in regards to Oblivion and Skyrim) is the player given varies ways to respond to NPCs. You either sound like a usual cutthroat, a Sithis fanatic, or you can stay silent throughout the entire questline. That's the sort of thing I like to see in TES. Interesting, humorous, aggressive, or stupid dialogue options for one's character that can get some interesting results from an NPC.

In any case, I do agree, that Fallout does excel in the PC's dialogue (especially in that of the original games as dialogue could very much so determine the outcome of any situation or get you killed). However, in comparison to Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout New Vegas, I find Fallout 3 to be rather weak in dialogue at times. It will sometime feel that there are only three options available in dialogue, you're either an annoyingly sounding goody two shoes boy scout, a guy with a slight "I don't care" attitude, or your an outright brat to takes every chance to insult someone. An example of this is when talking to Lucas Simms for the first time.

That has been a problem in EVERY TES game to date. This has ALWAYS been something TES has failed at.

The one that annoys me the most with the TG is Vekel after you become guildmaster:

"So you're Brynjolf's protege, eh? You do not look like much to me"

"It's one thing to say you have the skills to be a thief. It's another that you use them."

My rxn: :swear:

In Soviet Russia Skyrim, kids kill you! Or rather, they perform the Black Sacrament and get someone to kill you. :D

Kind of reminds me that my brother and I were playing Skyrim today. And he kept laughing at my comments, because everyone in the Thieves Guilds talks like their coin purse is stuck up where the sun don't shine. Especially especially Vex.

She is my least favorite NPC, alongside that other person in Solitude the clothing store. She has the best inventory and gear for a clothing character, but [censored] it I hate walking in there with how rude she is.

I think one of my own comments as a player to Vex was, "Someone needs to slap her across concrete, to teach her respect"

Cause I don't care. She is just rude. I know they were trying to go for the whole rough and tough thug life talk in there. But no every single person in the thieves guild needs to die. I am glad their outfit isn't doing so well because they deserve it. A bunch of pricks if you ask me.
