The thread on Archery

Post » Mon Oct 11, 2010 11:39 pm

the magazine says it takes longer to draw bows (plus the fact that you cant backpedal with such efficiency) so archery is already more tactical but....

1: it would be cool to have longbows and shortbows. longbows would take even longer to draw, but would be more powerfull. they would also require more skill to use and strengh to draw the bows

2: strengh should help the drawing of the bow

3: crossbows- crossbows shouldent be in the game because they look cool, they should be very different from bows.
-crossbows require less skill to use. the crossbow should be fairly accurate for even a novice user. skill should make the reloading faster
-crossbows would not require the player to draw the string, meaning they can fire as soon as they have a bolt inside them.
crossbows have very long reloads. skill lets the player reload faster

4: enchanting arrows/bolts

5: ammo
i found it strange that daedric ammo was very cheap and light compared to every other daedric item.
iron, glass, adamantium (if we get it) and steel arrows should just be normal
orcish arrows should be able to hold extra poison
dwemer bolts and daedric arrows should hold better enchantments
daedric arrows should be much more expensive than any arrow. but they should be able to hold extremely powerfull enchantments. a daedric arrow filled with fire magic should be the equivalent to fallout 3s mininuke in damage. it should be the kind of arrow you save for that one particular enemy.

would be cool if there was grappling hook ammo to climb stuff

6: shooting places
shooting legs should cripple someone and make them unable to walk without limping. with luck you might be able to trip someone up.
shooting an arm should encourage the target to drop their weapon. or be less efficient with it.
shooting a head or neck should either result in an instant kill (for most human enemies) or make them blind and enraged for most creatures.
shooting someone in the heart should result in an instant-kill
shooting the chest will slow them down
shooting in the ass will result in some humored dialog

7: wouldent mind if there was one handed crossbows aswell as two handed. also i wouldent mind if there was a repeating crossbow ARTIFACT (not a common thing)

8: no guns. especialy since guns in this game means that guns will have to be in the next.

9: skill should govern
accuracy, load speed and damage with bows
load speed and a little accuracy with crossbows

anyone else got any ideas to suggest/ want to argue something out

Looks good to me, but I would add that crossbows, in general, should also be a much less stealthy weapon then a regular bow, and not subject to the same of sneak bonus’s.

So crossbows would be a good choice for unskilled marksmen or heavy armored warrior types looking to inflict a little ranged damage, but they ultimately could in no way compete with a highly skilled master archer and their long bow.

Agreed.

I'd like to see that if your wielding a shortbow and your target is a lengthy distance away you would lay the bow horizontal to increase the range.

Longbows should have greater range.

2: strengh should help the drawing of the bow
Agreed, though this would probably svck for marksman characters because they'd have to divide their points between even more stats when they level up.

3: crossbows- crossbows shouldent be in the game because they look cool, they should be very different from bows.

What skill would help the player reload faster? If it's a marksman skill, what would the appeal of using a crossbow be if they're even slower than bows when you can just use a bow instead?

4: enchanting arrows/bolts
Sounds good in theory, but how would it work? Would players really be willing to sacrifice enchantments (assuming their enchanting skill isn't that high) on individual arrows?

5: ammo
i found it strange that daedric ammo was very cheap and light compared to every other daedric item.
iron, glass, adamantium (if we get it) and steel arrows should just be normal

I like the idea of driving up the price for Daedric arrows, but they shouldn't be that much heavier than other arrows. Also, grappling hook ammo seems too technical. We're in the Dark Ages, remember? There is a brain drain, so I don't think anyone would invent this. Maybe it could be found in Dwemer fortresses or something, though?

6: shooting places
shooting legs should cripple someone and make them unable to walk without limping. with luck you might be able to trip someone up.

shooting someone in the heart should result in an instant-kill
shooting the chest will slow them down
shooting in the ass will result in some humored dialog
Sounds good to me, aside from the instant kill stuff. Most human enemies would be wearing armor, anyway, so this would sort of render that a bit useless.

7: wouldent mind if there was one handed crossbows aswell as two handed. also i wouldent mind if there was a repeating crossbow ARTIFACT (not a common thing)
Sounds good to me, too. The repeating crossbow artifact should be hard as hell to get, though.

8: no guns. especialy since guns in this game means that guns will have to be in the next.
I think you just put this in to get cheap votes, haha.

9: skill should govern
accuracy, load speed and damage with bows
load speed and a little accuracy with crossbows
Agreed. However this should be a rank by rank thing. I don't think a Journeyman archer should have pinpoint accuracy or exceptionally high damage, even with perks.

i absolutely hated how bad bows were in oblivion. others may disagree but i thought they svcked and did too little damage for how short they shot and how little damage they did per arrow

crossbows could never be one handed you need to wind it up, and I believe the repeating crossbow was created very late

Only thing I can say on your responce to grapple hook arrows is well... people can tie a rope to an arrow and shoot it off. I wouldent mind that.

I would really like to see throwing spears/javelins added to the game. I could have a sword/axe in one hand and chuck spears like crazy with the other.

You kidding? Even unmodded, bows were great! Of course, you had to get your skill up, but it's that way for everything.

I like the sound of most of the ideas. The grapple idea is reminiscent of Thief's rope arrows, which I loved, but it's hard to see how such a thing would work if the engine is similar to Oblivion's.

It would be neat to see crossbows, but honestly I won't mind if they're not in Skyrim. They *really* should have been in Oblivion, but Skyrim seems more primitive, rugged, isolated - crossbows are a weapon for settled militia types & organized, bureaucratic armies, it seems to me.

If they do have crossbows, I don't think they should be nerfed vs. bows. The uber awesomeness of archery may be a little exaggerated (it pains me to say), and crossbows should have a very similar "punch" to their bow equivalents - though of course they should be very slow to reload. I like how a poster put it - they would be a good option for heavy fighter types.

I wouldn't say no to a Dwemer repeating crossbow somewhere in the game...

Two different categories of bows would be great, though - short bows for quicker, shorter ranged work (good for rogues), and longbows being slower but devastating.

Why would adding ghetto tilt to a bow increase its range?

Edit: Throwing spears would be great! So would spears in general.

I'm not so sure I like the "target sensitive" approach, tbh. It would need to be relatively simplified, like in Fallout3, but then you'd need to make it apply to melee for it to make sense, and it just seems to add a whole new bunch of problems.

I think if we enchant a projectile it should have a powerful enchantment compared to reusable weaponry like swords/axes.

Eventually it will dissapear/ or if you do enchant it , it becomes a one hit use kind of deal.

It would be expensive to enchant an arrow.

I don't think skill should affect damage at all, just accuracy and the time it takes to draw the bow back. Damage should be dependent on the type and weight of the bow, which should be dependent on skill and strength to use.

I think they should use a cripple system like Fallout 3, so if I tag a guy's leg with an arrow, he will start limping away.

My biggest demand is that bows be useful OUT OF STEALTH as well.I don't want to see a guard who has become a cactus chasing me around. It should not take more than 5 arrows to down an average armored enemy. It is ridiculous that a bow does more damage when you sneak upon the enemy anyway...
Make the bows WEAPONS and maybe the arrows could be expensiver or harder to find.

All I have to say is - Denock Arrow! But implement a fatigue penalty when it happens (you can't just draw the bow with nothing).

I would just like to remind those of you interested in the accuracy-aspect of the marksman skill of this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1154136-marksman-skill-a-more-realistic-take-on-accuracy/ ;)

It fairly detailled explains a suggestion about how the marksman skill could be reworked to actually make a difference in accuracy. In short: Use dispersion to have the low-skilled archers arrows deviate randomly from the aim within a determined "dispersion circle"(Shots will never deviate outside the circle). Have the circle constantly reduced as marksmann skill increases. The result: A continuous improvement in accuracy as you level your skill, not just when you reach a new mastery level.

That's exactly how I would do it.

I'm a little shaky on the one hit kills to the head, neck, or heart. Especially at low levels, I think hitting these spots should just do more damage and it should be pretty hard to hit those spots in the first place. The reason not at low levels is...well, we've had characters in many games get shot in the head, shot in the head again, hit in the chest with all kinds of sharp/dangerous objects, all but ripped to shreds, and they still somehow lived. Having places designated as instakills is actually kind of unbelieavable. Therye should be the possiblity of them happening! Just not every time.

Given it's Skyrim, throwing axes should certainly be in the mix.
