The Throat of the World

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 1:05 am

Looking over the Alduin's Wall at GameInformer, my eye was caught by the mention on Throat of the World. "7,000 steps must be climbed to reach the remote retreat." I haven't heard anything else regarding High Hrothgar in game, but I hope that this reference in GameInformer is an indication that we will actually have 7,000 steps to climb rather than a nod towards the lore.

So ignoring fast travel, my question to you is would you embrace the idea of climbing the steps considering it will take up a large amount of time? A lite-version of the stairs? A NPC "Are you ready to go yet?" transition? Or do you have your own idea?

Hell no! My character is to lazy to climb 7,000 steps. Give me a teleporter, or something.Maybe the "Are you ready to go yet?" transition would work too.

I definitely want to climb it. I'd like it to be a scripted event, where you go on and climb and there's these gales of wind and music accompanying you as you make your heroic ascent... It should give you the feeling that this is your true destiny, and when you reach the top the Greybeards will bow before you and speak your name... Thus you become the Dovakiin.

Of course, the name thing will be the same for everyone but mean something ceremonial in some language.

What would Morrowind be like if you could fast travel/get transported straight to Dagoth Ur's citadel?

The journey is part of the experience. The experience is part of what TES is.

Hell yes!
Macharius, http://www.imperial-library.info/search/node/High%20Hrothgar Perhaps you'd find it interesting?

If my knowledge doesn't fail me (I'm too tired to check at the moment, hopefully someone who knows for certain can correct me if I'm wrong), High Hrothgar was where Thu'um was first used. Or something along those lines.
I'd give anything to go there. And damnit my character and I are gonna walk.

Few things interest me as much as Dunmer lore, and one of those things is Nord Lore.

It appears I was too eager to post, and didn't read the "in game" part of your post >.<

Still, a little lore never goes amiss xD

I see your point though. How in hell are they going to make the seven thousand steps seem truly epic.

Todd already said they are putting in 7000 steps. I will happily cross all 7000.

I love fast travel and all of that stuff, but the 7,000 steps seems like it should be a personal accomplishment. The only problem is that it might get boring.

1. I think that if it is part of a quest, you talk to the NPC involved in the quest for most of the voyage, just so you aren't bored out of your mind. Like Red Ded: Redemtion travelling, where you are talking to the person driving the stagecoach while you travel (except make it so you can't skip it). Didn't they say that you weren't going to be locked onto somebody's face while talking to them anymore?

2. If it is something that is optional, they should have a LOT of scenery on the way up. Make it worth the travellers while. Add some rare, good treasure at the top of the mountain.

3. MAYBE have it so once you reach the top of it, you can just fast travel up there when you want. That will save a lot of time and frustration (no more "Poop! I forgot something important up there!" moments).

I don't think there should be a chest of loot, just waiting for the player at the top...it's rather more than that.

I'm sure there will be plenty of challenges, be they terrain, weather and creatures, during the ascent. They'll ensure its an epic 'high' point of the whole TES series. ;)

There's no way that you won't be able to fast travel there after you ascend the 7000 steps for the first time.

I didn't mean it like having a plain treasure chest that says "good job, heres a powerful sword!" I meant it to be more discreet than that. Maybe have a powerful Dragon, or an old, wise man that was up there for years, and needs you to complete a quest. I think that they should make worth while with maybe some sort of reward, whether it be a quest , an item, or a spell.

Unless you begin at the top and cast a mark spell, wouldn't the steps be easiest way to travel up a mountain?

It will probably have something to do with dragon shouts so it will most definitely be worthwhile.

The Grey Beards live up there. Perhaps they'll have a quest for you. Or (more likely) it will be part of a quest to ascend to the very top.

For me, just getting to the top and seeing the views would be enough of a reward. Meeting the Grey Beards would add to that immensely. But methinks bethesda are gonna do something with them by way of dragon.

Although, their use of Thu'um may render them stronger than dragons. Especially as a group.

Who knows.

Edit:
It will probably have something to do with dragon shouts so it will most definitely be worthwhile.

Damn, beaten to it by Dragonborn.

This. Climbing those 7000 teps with a unique music only played during that situation would (or hopefully will :) ) be amazing...

Walking 7000 steps actually wouldn't take that long, and I bet it would be cool. Once you've walked up you could fast travel there so it would't be and inconvenience.

I'd climb it, it exemplifies my characters story to say "I climbed the 7,000 steps." you know.

Well said :)
I can't believe some people voted no ,to climb the steps. How would you not want to see what it looks like, climbing those steps, looking at the different views around you etc, knowing bethesda as spent ages making the world look good. Some people must not appreciate an open world game, some want to be teleported to the top and miss an hand-crafted landmark in the game.
I don't understand some people.each to their own. I'll be taking my time,no matter where i go,i like to look at things on the way. Exploration and adventure :)

People moan about oblivion being bland,as scenery and the land, yet when they create things like the 7000 steps or hand crafted places etc ,people want to bypass it with the click of a button or spell....sorry...rubs me the wrong way.

It doesn't necessarily follow that you simply have to plod up 7000 identical cookie-cutter steps. That would be boring

Hopefully there will be challenges along the way - puzzles, traps, monsters, secret locations, narrow bridges that crumble away, tricky gaps to jump ....
