The True Best Elder Scrolls Game

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 9:41 pm

It seems to me that with TES games, the first edition that you play is your favorite. The Morrowind "generation" of players love that game above any of the others, and any that will come to be. Many of them can't stand Oblivion, which has just as many zealous fans. That first experience of wonder that you have upon beginning an ES game, bewilderment from the gargantuan world completely open to explore, cannot be recreated. It's like entering Disneyland for the first time. At first the awe verges on panic as you wonder what you should do, where you should go, and feel totally lost. However, as you learn the ropes and familiarize yourself with the world, you develop a love for it. For this reason, we are imprinted with our first ES game and it becomes our favorite, and no matter how many features are added or removed we cannot reclaim that first playthrough. Nostalgia leads us to view our first game as the indisputably superior product. For this reason, I will never love Skyrim as much as my first ES game, and neither will you. However, to enjoy the game to its fullest you should stop comparing, stop trying to mold your present experiences into past ones, and relish in the beauty that Skyrim has to offer exclusively. That's my two cents about the constant arguments regarding the "best" ES game, hopefully it will open some minds to other opinions considering there is no truly best game, rather a best experience.

I started with Morrwind and like Skyrim better. I guess that makes me the exception that proves the rule.

Interesting. Do you mean you would rather play Skyrim now or that you enjoyed your first time with Skyrim more than your first with Morrowind, back when its graphics and combat didn't seem so atrocious?

Started with Arena, played all the successive ES games. Like Morrowind best, heavily modded Oblivion second. Probably will like a heavily modded Skyrim third, maybe second, if someone can mod up a few snow plows to get rid of the endless white stuff. ;)

I started with Morrowind too. I will rather play Skyrim and I enjoyed my first with Skyrim more than I did with Morrowind.

Agreed.

Morrowind was my first and favorite, but I gotta say I think Skyrim may be taking crown.

I started with Oblivion. I loved playing it and didn't stop, I was doing everything with one character. However, I love Skyrim more. With Oblivion, I only made two characters and didn't plan on doing any more. With Skyrim, I plan to make more than just two. Each time I'll play it differently. Oblivion just didn't give me the same enthusiasm

Started with Morrowind.

I always loved Morrowind more than Obliv, but Skyrim wins over Mororwind (though it's close)

Unfortunately I cant even put Skyrim in my top 5 RPGs, with all of the content and features, mechanics that were cut. Once a lot of mods come out, then maybe it will be even better than Morrowind, but as it is now, its not even close for me.

Started on oblivion went back to daggerfall
Tried morrowind (hated it)
Love skyrim...
I feel like bethesda has gotten the idea on how to make a good in between in TES games so that, overall, its a very enjoyable experience also the story, combat, and graphics are only seeming to get better with eatch iteration now..
TES games are starting to really show that the artstyle of its creators has lasting appeal
From arena all the way to skyrim and in its future

I LIKE ARENA THE BEST TROLOLOLOLOLOL.

No, seriously, that game is [censored].

For me, it goes like this:

Morrowind

Daggerfall

Oblivion and Skyrim are tied, mainly because Oblivion's guild quests were at least decent.

What? How does that even work?

My first game was Oblivion and I like Morrowind more, because it has more everything. The only major faults in my opinion are the combat system and the graphics.

I played Morrowind first....
I prefer Morrowind.
I don't know... I remember watching LOTR in that time, it was so epic, I wanted a game like that.
Then I found Morrowind. :D

I played Arena the day it came out in '94 and loved it. Then I played Daggerfall and liked it even more. Then I played Morrowind and liked it even more. Then I played Oblivion and was sad. I have to say Skyrim is a big improvement over vanilla Oblivion. I've only played about 15-20 hours so far, though. Morrowind was my third, and favorite TES game thus far.

I started with Morrowind - picking up the GOTY for my X-Box in about 2004/5, but my favorite is Skyrim - though I would like some features from that game to be present in Skyrim...

Same. Seems like we're few who do though.
