THE ULTIMATE FIX FOR ALL MOUSE PROBLEMS

Post » Sat May 19, 2012 10:00 pm

Sorry for the cap lock, but this needs some attention.

This will fix dodgy mouse input, for example lag and stuttering and ultra high sensitivity of Y axis at high frame rates.
  • First set V-sync to On unless application specifies, in your graphics card driver control panel
  • Next add these lines to your Skyrim.ini, this file is located in C:\Users\YourUserName\Documents\My Games\Skyrim.
  • Under [Display] Enter iPresentInterval=0
  • Under [Controls] Enter fMouseHeadingSensitivity=0.0400, fMouseHeadingYScale=0.0200. fMouseHeadingXScale=0.0200, bMouseAcceleration=0
  • Next download Dxtory 2.0.109 from here http://dxtory.com/v2-download-en.html
  • After you have installed Dxtory, under the advanced tab tick the box that say Limit Video FPS and enter 64fps, This is very important, if you do not select 64fps, you will get screen tearing.
  • I also like to run the game in a boarderless window mode, as it helps with ALT-TAB stability. You can do this by downloading this mod http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4

I hope this helps everyone enjoy the game.

I have a dumb question, why would I turn on vsync and also run a fps limiter?

For me, using any sort of FPS capping causes archery to be messed up. Arrows fired are delayed. To see for yourself, turn off vsync, cap your fps (I tested at 45fps, 60fps, and 80fps), then go to an indoor area where your FPS is high. Fire an arrow at the wall and see what happens. I have not tested with melee weapons or magic, so I don't know if they are affected as well.

This leaves you with 3 choices:

1. Leave vsync on and play with reduced performance and mouse lag
2. Turn vsync off and have messed up vertical mouse sensitivity when your fps is high (plus other physics bugs)
3. Turn vsync off and cap your fps and have messed up archery physics.

The third bullet point:

Under [Display] Enter iPresentInterval=0

disables vsync.

Note that this will only fix your vertical mouse issues if your rig is able to maintain the same FPS constantly. As soon as it drops lower, your vertical sensitivity will also be lower. This is a workaround, not a fix.

What about the issue where suddenly indoors sometimes looking up and down is very choppy/stuttering.

My mouse works fine almost always..but randomly in some indoors it does that..can't figure out why.

has anyone tried this and compared it to turning off vsync and mouse acceleration? imrtun, what results did you have by just turning off vsync and mouse acceleration? did the game run fine but the vertical mouse sensitivity was too high?

This is really my biggest issue with the game right now. I've not found a solution that works yet. Sadly, this didn't help at all.

I have the same issue..I think its just cause of low fps (I can hit 40-50fps indoors, which is [censored] like 15-20fps in other games) I think.

I don't think it has anything to do with FPS. It almost always occurs indoors, and through a little testing, I've noticed it's either caused or made much worse by having magic equipped and readied. This could be tied to something else entirely.

Well that is the problem I have. I checked when the sluggishness came, and it seemed to come when i hit under 50fps)

That's a lot of drastic changes and third party software needed for what's obviously a game issue there...

Ah! You're talking about sluggishness! Maybe we have different issues, then. What I (and perhaps NewYears1978) experience is the opposite of sluggishness. It's like the game is skipping frames to keep everything sorted, resulting in the vertical movement and on-screen hands jerking about. As I said, it doesn't happen without readied spells for me, and never in 3rd person.

When my frame rate drops (thankfully only in certain towns right now) I have the same sluggish y-axis as many others.

It's great these things help people but personally I prefer the mouse acceleration on. I didn't notice it at all before reading these topics, and after disabling it suddenly I'd have to pick up the mouse and move it to keep turning, even with the sensitivity at max. I don't need to do that with the acceleration.

I think disabling mouse acceleration is a personal preference and not something to be presented as some universal improvement. That is unless there's an issue that's not affecting me that disabling it is a workaround for.

Mouse problems are certainly not universal. I play with vsync off and my framerate varies between 35 and 200 and I have no issues with how the mouse works on any axis.

lol you must never have been killed by walking over a pot only to send it flying and nail you in the head! How are you playing with the wonky physics?

It has been proven than the Y mouse axis and physics are tied to FPS. Iif I don't use a limiter to cap FPS at 60, almost every time I go into a house, everything goes flying.

I can't stand the constant thumping every time I walk indoors.

I don't see any wonky physics. Seems odd that you feel you know what's going on with everyone else's computer. Why not stick to commenting on what you see when you play instead of imaging what's going on for everyone else?

The mouse feels the smoothest with a fps limiter, mouse acceleration off and iPresentInterval = 0
The mouse felt okay with iPresentInterval=0, prerendered frames 1 (instead of 3), mouse acceleration off. The setting was okay, but did result in some y-axis stutter at high fps. If you do not change your prerendered frames to 1, you will experience x-axis stutter too.
The mouse x-axis felt bad with iPresentInterval=0, mouse acceleration off.
The mouse felt atrocious with iPresentInterval=1

I hope this helps.

In your graphics card driver, try setting max prerendered frames to 1, normally default is 3. Something this setting is called flip queue size.

The casting hands stuttering is something else entirely, I believe. I think a fix for that may lie in these ini settings. Though I've not tested enough yet. The defaults are listed below.

fFreeCameraTriggerDeadzone=0.1000
fFreeCameraRunSpeed=2.0000
fFreeCameraRotationSpeed=3.0000
fFreeCameraTranslationSpeed=20.0000
f1stPitchOffsetMouseMaxLag=4.0000
f1stPitchOffsetMouseFollowSpeed=15.0000
f1stPitchOffsetMultOffMaxSpeed=1.0000
f1stPitchOffsetMultOffAccel=1.0000
f1stPitchOffsetMultOnMaxSpeed=0.6000
f1stPitchOffsetMultOnAccel=0.5000
f1stPitchOffsetTarget=0.7500

While I don't have that setting built in to my driver (or if it is, it's buried in the CCC somewhere), using an FPS limiter and setting it to 1 lessens it, but doesn't eliminate the problem. I'm almost convinced it has to do with the way the game handles the y-axis, and at this point I'm resigned to wait for patch 1.2 and hope that resolves the issue.

Why limit to 64 fps? If you want to prevent screen tearing, you'd need to set the FPS to 60 or 30. Standard monitor refresh rate is 60, anything above that will cause tearing.
64fps would definitely help, but limiting it to 60 or 59 should be about perfect. This has been standard practice for a long time now.
