The Undead Screenshot...

Post » Fri Oct 22, 2010 5:31 am

Take a look at the way the second from the right is gripping its weapon, it is holding the weapon slanted and wide gripped. The left draugr closest to the front has a close grip on the ax. The left draugr farther back has a one handed grip. The ax on it is also double bladed unlike the one in front of it. Also take note that the front left draugr's ax would nearly be touching the ground if the length was the same as the second from the right's "ax". For the second to the right's hand is below the blade but if you measure its forearm then it is two lengths long. The front left's for arm is the same size as the blades lowest point to the bottom of the screen. Just differences I noticed but I could be wrong.

Anyone else notice how the Undead in the background of http://i70.servimg.com/u/f70/15/40/10/16/skyrim10.jpg screenshot looks like he is holding a Haldberd or some sort of Pole-Axe?

Screen shot? ... It's an artwork.

And it'S just an axe...or a warhammer...

No it isnt. Artwork often looks just like a painting. Anything that looks computer animated is a screenshot.

I not really sure what it is, but too me the difference in grip on the two weapons shows either they are different weapons or they have massively improved the way weapons are used to the point that different NPC's might wield the same weapon in different ways.

I believe it is an axe, though i'm not 100% on that.
Because if you look at the part of the shaft thats above the sword,it has a darker line down the edge of the pole,to me it looks like something may be attached to it.
I still think it may be an axe,but that dark line makes me think, that it just might not be.
Like i said, that darker line to me,make me think something is attached to that pole.
Just my view.

For those saying it's the same as the two-handed axe on the left front draugr and that it's not a pole-weapon, check out the grip. Two-handed axes will be gripped close together, and pole axes will be gripped wider apart(It's possible that the grip changes when swinging the weapon, but other than that you can't argue)

You also can't tell whether the draugr is holding an axe or halberd. The front/top of the blade is not visible at all. I can see a piece of metal in the back but nothing in the front(don't mistake that draugr arm for the blade either :P)

If you actually look closely to the end of the right shoulder of the left zombie, you'll notice two sharp edges poping out - i think that not from his armour but a kind of polearm, possibly halberd...

It's an axe with a longer handle than we've seen in previous games, but it's not quite as long as the halberds in Morrowind. Still, I'm glad there will be weapons that are closer to halberds aesthetically.

Yeah i was thinking about it too.I think it is the same weapon,1st undead just slashed you with a axe and another is walking towards you, that is because their grip is differential.

To those of you who keep mistaking axes as halberds, http://www.aurorahistoryboutique.com/products/A000237.jpg. Notice it's pretty much a spear, with an axe head and contains a hook or point on the back (sometimes a hammer). Halberds act so that it can hold against charging cavalry (spear point), grab ahold of the cavalryman and pull him off (the hook end), and the axe to allow top heavy slashing. However, they're quite [NUMMIT] against very close combat (too little space for a large weapon), often requiring the user to switch to a side short sword.

Isn't http://i.ytimg.com/vi/M9W2qYoe54c/0.jpg also a halberd?

Well the front draugr might just as well be in the middle of a attack animation, while the back one is idle. To me they seem like the same weapon, a two-handed axe.

It's a Guan Dao, a Chinese Pole-arm.

I know its not probable, but I hope their weapon and armor is lootable.

Yea, it bothers me when armor is just part of the model, like with Goblins in Oblivion. It makes sense for things like Dremora and Mythic Dawn agents to not have lootable armor, but I think if anything humanoid and corporeal is wearing something, we should be able to, too.

But here's my two cents. There are four draugr, one with a sword, and 3 with other, hafted weapons. It looks like either: a battle axe, a pole axe, and a bardiche (which are all quite distinct from a halberd...meant much for for chopping and slashing than stabbing) OR: two battle axes and a bardiche (what people think is a spear) or three battle axes. The only reason I would think there are more than one type of weapon in the pic is because of the grip, but that could just be an animation, and is definitely not more than just different "stances" for similar weapons, ie, you would not hold a pole axe the same way as a battle axe, even if they are the same weapon in game (ie, share the same perk trees)

So long story short...I see no halberds. I do see pole weapons, but there is a large gap between pole-weapon-halberd-spear. Generally poll weapons can be as short as 4 feet long, (like a dane axe) whereas most halberds and spears are 6-8 feet long. Because of that length, the heads are much smaller and designed to be held parallel to the ground and thrusted. Smaller pole weapons with larger heads are strictly meant to be lifted perpendicular to the ground and brought down in a chopping motion. Obviously, you can also swing them from left to right, but you get much less power in your swing, it's more of a defensive strike to keep distance.

Firstly: I have to agree with all those who say that it's probably some sort of axe (or club, mace, war-hammer?).

Secondly:
But has anyone noticed their beards!? Two skeletons in the front have beards wich are tied into a braid. Pretty cool. :mohawk:

Skeletons don't have beards, that's most likely Skyrims version of http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Bloodmoon:Draugr#Draugr. They look pretty awesome, btw :celebration:

Please look at http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/5646/543639576075909c1391o.jpg and stop debating. It is not a spear. It is an axe same as the one in the hands of the first undead, only held in a different position.

I'm not so sure mate.I've used your pic and pointed something out,it looks odd to me.
And i believe it would not be there if it was the axe in front, there would be no need for it,it looks like somethings attached.

That is a blade of an axe. If you keep lightning efects in mind then you can notice it is a same axe as the on in the first creatures hands.

That is not the blade of the axe,it doesn't look right, and it's too straight.

The first axe is not straight,it looks like it slightly, but you can tell its still curved, just like the axe at the very back of the picture.
I can see where your coming from about it being a blade, but something just doesn't look right about it.
I'm sort of in-between what you see and what i see,so i really do know where your coming from, but my gut says otherwise :)

The way that the one in the back is holding it differently from the one in the front. Definitely not an Axe unless you hold different weapons of the same type uniquely

Do simplify. Its 3 AM here...You are basically saying what I am... They are holding a same weapon in a different way.
