Notice it's pretty much a spear, with an axe head and contains a hook or point on the back (sometimes a hammer). Halberds act so that it can hold against charging cavalry (spear point), grab ahold of the cavalryman and pull him off (the hook end), and the axe to allow top heavy slashing. However, they're quite [NUMMIT] against very close combat (too little space for a large weapon), often requiring the user to switch to a side short sword.
