Is the Underking Good or Evil?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:30 am

So, was he good or evil? If you give him the Mantella in Daggerfall,
Spoiler
he uses it merely to kill himself
-- no desire for evil. I heard in one of the endings to Daggerfall,
Spoiler
he shuts down the Numidium himself
, making a magic-free zone for miles around. One of his quotes is used in Morrowind, but I'm not sure how I would interpret that.

At the same time, he betrayed the emperor Tiber Septim, so that would be one point for evil.

So, is he good, or evil?

good/evil is relative, good/evil is nonexistent, blah blah. covered in the Dagoth Ur thread sufficiently imo.

my answer? nope. it was stolen from him, it was his right to get it back.

I won't even go into all the stuff I said in the other thread. So I'm just gonna answer your question:

No.

They're saying stop thinking as if an answer were that simple.

It's politics. He's bound to do some good things, and some evil things. Same with Tiber Septim. Whether his betrayal of Septim was "good" or "evil" depends on your interpretation of those events (which I've never understood). Brutus betrayed Caesar. Was he evil?

as stated in the dagoth ur thread "good and evil are a point of view"..i mean if he is evil its becuz tiber septim apparently betrayed him..which would explain him cursing the shrine to talos or he betrayed tiber septim so he was just evil...i dont beliv there is a real answer..

While he seemed to have good intentions, he wasn't above some pretty cruel methods, such as enslaving the four Blades whom he had defeated to prevent them from breaking his barrier.

Hi, Spartan. You'll fast learn that in TES answers are never this easy if you haven't by now (and you may well have). Well, you know what he did, Do you think he is good or evil? It's like asking if Dagoth Ur or Vivec or Tiber Septim was one or the other: they did and were different things for and to different people. From MY point of view, Dagoth ur is good, Vivec is evil and Septim is a tyrant. In MY POV, The Underking is the only true Neutral of the bunch in TES. However, anyone else would, could and do think differently. It's all up to you.

The TES universe is totally devoid of absolutes. the concept itself is erroneous there.

The Underking was evil! How could any upstanding citizen of the Empire say anything else? He defied the will of the Holy Tiber Septim, his Lord and Liege. Only the most wicked are capable of such insubordination and such disloyalty, only the most wicked can crown an Emperor with the intention to assassinate him!

How can you apologize for such acts by saying that the world is devoid of absolutes. They are right here in front of your eyes!

I don't know. Would you be recruited by the Dark Brotherhood if you murdered him? If yes, then he'd be evil.

Yep. That's why I love that quote. It's all about how absolutes are constructs of the mind they are viewed in...

Think of it this way, good/evil is all about perspective. If he destroyed an army, the people who sent the army would say he is evil but the people he saved would think of him good. So to tell, the account would have to not be baised at all.
