The Unemployment Thread

AKA Why the hell do company websites absolutely svck?

I had recently finished High School in December, having intended to get a job and do minor film-work on the side for the sake of building up a small audience and hopefully using it to launch a Kickstarter campaign.

Three months later... as well as what has to be around 30 Applications, and I never received so much as a single phone call back to tell me "Nope." I'm living with my girlfriend's family, getting around 200 dollars a month from my Mom (whom has really surprised me recently,) have no competent people to do film with (your contacts aren't exactly the greatest upon leaving High School,) and trying to write a fantasy novel in 75-80 degree weather.

This doesn't bother me, to much anyways. Life is rough, oh well. Nobody ever got anything done by lamenting their sorrow every day over the internet, or however they did it before such a thing existed. I live by the philosophy that I'll cease to exist one day, so might as well keep moving forward no matter what.

What bothers me are two things: 1:The ignorant attitudes that some people have toward the unemployed. 2: The scumbags that make unemployed people (like me) look bad.

The best example I have for number one is something my girlfriend's sister told her a week ago, when I wasn't in earshot. "Tell him to get a freaking job already!" I REALLY wish she tried saying something like that directly to me. All of you know that I'm a rude bastard who won't restrain himself, so just take a moment to imagine the hellfire I would have brought down upon her. By the way, this woman doesn't even live in the same house as the rest of us, so she has no reason to get pissy with me.

Here's some advice if you know someone that's unemployed: Don't tell them to get a job. Not only is it the most useles thing you can say, but it's also flat-out insulting. Chances are that they have been trying, but this terrible thing called a bad economy is making that a bit hard, as well as the "apply online" philosophy that just about every major corporation in the U.S has adopted.

As for my second gripe? Some unemployed people making the rest of us look bad? My girlfriend has an aunt (whom I absolutely despise for so many reasons) that just LOVES to be a scumbag. She cheats on her husband, than post about it (in a very terrible attempt at being vague) on Facebook; she smokes infront of her young children, and anyone else for that matter; she complains about being broke, and here's the punchline... she had a simple job that she quit, "because the lady I work with was mean."

The lady she works with was probably not mean, but frustrated at this woman's lack of competence! And this is the woman whos mother, my girlfriend's grandma, likes to complain about me and my girlfriend not getting a job (my girlfriend is finishing her last quarter of High School by the way.) The cherry on top is that my girlfriend's mom is ALSO unemployed, and, like her sister, is not even trying to get a job or do something else.

So that's my story. I know a lot of you have been in, or are in the unemployment boat. What's it been like for you, how long, and what do you do with all the free time?

I'm in the same boat as you right now, in that it's hard to get a job due to this 'apply online' thing. It doesn't give you a chance to sell yourself and you just become a number. It's almost impossible to even get an interview (I've had one for McDonalds and I've been searching since last May, they took about a month after the interview to say no).

Hopefully though, I will have an apprenticeship by the end of the year, I'm scheduled for an interview next month.

I think it's harder for you, Blackhand since you live in such a small (landwise) location and likely a high population density. High pop+Low job ops=poor chances.

I'm a full-time student, but I still want a job. I'm getting tempted to do naughty things for some easy cash.

Without a doubt. I'm moving to Texas in three months, so I imagine things will become much easier once I'm there. At the very least, more locations to film.

And Moog, I was in that train of thought when I thought I was going to be homeless two months ago. I even applied to be a cameraman for uh... "stuff.. thangz." Actually, I got a call back for that, but the first question the man asked (which should of been "Are you Eighteen or Older?) was "Do you have your own place to film?"

But this is likely not the place to have a discussion about that industry, so I'll end it there.

Are there any temp-type agencies where you are, Blackhand? Sometimes such places can be helpful while other times they may be useless, but if nothing else, your name is in there and you might get occasional simple temp work while looking for something more permanent.

(edit) - oh, you're moving in a few months...never mind. Might be something to look into, still, if you run into the same boat in Texas. But hopefully you'll have better luck there. :)

Call them a few days after applying online. That's what I've been told by former employers

My friend is unemployed. He keeps applying at places, a few days later someone on Facebook says they got a job at the exact same place. I find it absolutely hilarious when that happens. I knows it's not his fault but the economies so I don't give him a hard time for it.

Just like Tuesday, he went to a local Subway and applied online went in to meet with the manager, manager wasn't there and the assistant manager was though, he said it was awkward because the assistant didn't know about any of that. He didn't get the job in case you were wondering.

That's the worse thing about it. Seeing people that you know aren't working as efficiently as they should be getting the job you applied for.

Went to the grocery store the other day, the same one I had applied to twice in the past four months. Saw an employee grudgingly drag a broom across the store, back slumped, mouth hanging open.

I could go on and on, but the point is made.

Yeah, that pretty much sums up your post. I wish the problems in my life were only two or three degrees outside of my comfort zone.

In my area, it's more about who you know and less what you know for corporate jobs unfortunately. My pops been unemployed for 6 years and he's getting picked over due to his age (57) even for the more simpler jobs.

Frustrating and unfair to say the least. I'm grateful to still have my job, but fear what the future outlook is.

Threads not neccesarily about having a Pity Contest, Lemunde. Simply a discussion of what is an increasingly common experience for many people living in the U.S. Just because you have tough problems going on, doesn't mean no one else gets to talk about theirs.
