The use of vats (or lack of)

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 7:05 pm

From traliers and gameplay ive seen so far many people are just using iron sight. The lack of vats is upsetting because it was a key game mechanic in previous games. Is bethesda going towards action and less rpg? I sure hope not. I myself will be using vats as often as possible. The sound of vats opening is nostalgiac to me.

Will you be using vats? Only in tough spots? All the time like me?

What are you talking about by the lack of?

Vats is still there, it just no longer stops time. It slows it significantly however. You're required to make your decisions faster now.

Also, stop saying the game is "less rpg" it's still technically an RPG. It's just not in the Easter fashion.

Remember that RPG means "Role Playing". As in you are playing a role where you must make decisions. Not taking turns, or have elements that may be seen in DnD. That is just a mechanic.

From videos i have watched there is a lack of use.

People are already playing it in germany. I have watched some live streams and none of the people i've watched used vats. Also the trailer shows vats being used just a couple of times. The rest of the enemies are taken down via iron sights.

I'm fine with it not being as prominent. I admit because I always played the hardest difficulty I used it too often as a crutch. I for anything that forces me to challenge myself more.

I think you misunderstood the original question. I know vats is in game but the majority of people playing are not utilizing this feature and im curious as to why.

Because not everyone uses vats? I rarely used it in New Vegas, and had to use it frequently in FO3 because you can't hit crap without it.

Ok i did not know accuracy was that bad in fallout 3. I always use vats. Ever since the first fallout. Ill try 4 without it and see what the deal is.

It could just mean that the realtime combat is so much better than Fallout 3's, that vats feels kind of redundant.

I don't think vats has changed much except for the time slowing thing, so I guess it's still viable to use.

I would guess that the shooting mechanics have been improved enough that it's fun to not use it rather than frustrating. I use it in 3 and NV because the gunplay just isn't up to par with other shooters.

Honestly, I found myself using VATS almost exclusively in Fallout 3 because the gunplay was pretty bad. In New Vegas, I used VATS a lot less, usually only when I was facing multiple enemies at relatively close range. I like VATS, but if the real-time combat is good, I'm probably going to save VATS for the trickier situations. If blasting your enemies is enjoyable without VATS, people are going to forgo using VATS until they feel that they actually need it, such as when they need to strategically target a Deathclaw or take on multiple enemies at once. I don't see it as a sign that VATS isn't good; it's just that real-time combat is so much better that people don't want to use VATS all the time anymore.

You live in the age of Call of Duty and Battle Field where using iron sights is a must for accuracy. Why are you so surprised that a majority of people are going to use a system they are familiar with?

Why does it matter how other people play their games? You ought to worry more about how you want to play and less about how others play. You'll get more enjoyment out of it that way.

all i have to judge is what others are doing right now. SO with what ive seen it seems like vats is almost useless now. I really wont know until I play myself. I'll come back after release and make a similar thread with my opinion with iron sights vs vats.

Yeah the new 'bullet time' vats does look good, can't wait to test it in action

VATS will still be viable, and you have perks to improve its performance as you advance. At least now we get better shooter mechanics. I think VATS will still perform like many have gotten used to, you may just now have to focus on those traits and perks to make it fully functional. I personally thought that previous games leveled it to that magic 95% hit chance a bit too quickly.

Difficulty level probably comes into play heavily. On the easiest difficulty in F3 and NV, you barely needed vats because everything dies so easily. On the hardest difficulty vats is almost necessary. You can most likely assume that these leaked videos are people playing on the easiest setting....

VATS for days. All day. Every day. VATS is life. I just like blowing heads off with maximum precision. All I ever go for in VATS are headshots.

I love what Beth has done with the new VATS. Frankly, I was one of those players who found VATS ridiculous for a real time environment. Not to mention illogical in certain cases. But Beth already said in an article that they wanted to make VATS for FO4 more applicable for a real time environment while at the same time keeping a bit of the old VATS mechanics.

Vats is fine.. and there are a ton of perks specifically for vats.. its just alot of these people are COD/shooter players and want to play the game as a shooting game.. and thats fine thats what they want.

FO3 VATS was a joke. Instant win if you replenished it after each use. Skyrim did it right with the archery skill that slows time instead of stopping it. I want that.

I've said this before on these forums and I'll say it again.

I am a firm believer that the overwhelming majority of people who get games early (before release date) are not deserving of them and they tend to be what the people across the pond refer to as "wankers".

To be clear, I'm not judging everyone who gets games early like this, just the majority.

Who cares if other people are using vats or not? Just use it yourself without worrying what other gamers are doing, it's still there whether you're the only person using it or the only person not using it. I don't understand why this is a topic.

I imagine with high perception and agility you can use VATS just like in FO3. There are perks to support using VATS.

Gameplay footage and trailers show off the idea of the game, not every aspect. Bethesda has already confirmed the game is designed to use VATS or not use VATS, allowing you to choose between the two. Also, since the leaked footage is generally of characters starting off I doubt its as likely to contain as much VATS use.
