The "@username" system MUST be done away with before

There was no note at all. The handle was just there for every guildy to see.

Only your friends and guildies can see your username. Why would you friend or be in a guild with ppl you can't trust anyway?

I think it needs to go as well. Nothing to do with security. I simply don't want my account name advertised. It's a silly name and it will probably prevent me from joining guilds.

So much ignorance in this thread about how people actually breach your security. Do you really think that any non-stupid hacker is brute forcing your accounts individually?

1. That is something that you can stop with proper passwords that stress or overload their rainbow tables

2. That is quite literally the most inefficient and time intensive way of getting passwords and is easily countered via many common security measures.

3. Brute forcing would have to be done an an individual account basis where there are much better ways to get usernames and passwords than can return groups of people at a time or even compromise an entire database.

4. As alluded to in #3 most methods used to get passwords will return username information as well and the username is not necessary information to start with.

SO MUCH THIS! It happened to me in WoW, I don't want to be rude to anyone but sometimes I just want my alone time! Also, in TESO I am going to RP even more than I did in WoW, and I need different lives with different friends for different characters.

There is no security issue. Period. You can claim there is one, all you like, but that won't make it so. There are security measures in place, as Zenimax has said, though I couldn't find exact details. I am almost positive that they will be similar to GW2, in which it prompts you to verify your account through email, if another IP address is used to access your account. I am about 98% positive that security was considered, and will be taken care of.

Now, personally, I like this system, simply because it forces more accountability. This is doubly true on a megaserver, where one cannot just switch to another server after stealing stuff out of the guild bank, etc.

If you don't like the system, fine, but don't claim it is because of security reasons, just fess up and say it is because you want to guild hop, etc. I have no problem with that. BTW there is a show offline feature, for you guys.

Now if you are just ignorant, and claiming that there are security issues because you fail to see how the account could be secure in other ways. Relax. There will be no issues.

I dont mind it if i can pick what name is displayed for all my character, i just prefer it not be the name i actually log in with just so i can feel safer. If i use Jobob as my username then you will still know its me. I will say my username isnt nothing nasty or anything its just my my username and prefer it to be for my eyes only.

yes I am well aware that we may be ignorant in what is a breach of security or not a breach of security but just curious why not just HUMOR us and let us choose the @username? is there any real harm in that?

Authenticators were in the game because people are stupid.

I don't advocate protecting stupid from itself.

The authenticators, if I remember right, were also added before battle.net email addresses, when you logged in via account name.

Now your accounts are just WoW1, WoW2, etc.

You can contact support and they'll change it.

I love that it allows for an account wide ignore.

Wish WoW had that.

And such a terrible idea.

"Feeling" safe or not has little to do with how secure you actually are.

Not entirely.

Havent tried groups yet, but tells and zone chat use character names.

Guilds and friends lists use account names.

You can appear offline to guildmates.

I use to see nothing wrong with using my real name as my account name for MMO's. I used my real name as my Everquest account and then stopped playing for 5 years. I picked up a new email address in that time, as well. Just knowing the account name made it very easy to reactivate years later.

When I first started WoW, I used a random username, and then I stopped playing for several years and picked up a new email address. I wasn't able to recover my old account and started a new one.

I honestly thought I was thinking ahead this time by using my real name again.

Making decisions based on feelings at the corporate level and higher is what screwed with American society, and why we have such a crappy government.

I prefer actual facts over feelings any day.

They do. I powercycled my modem and router last week, so I got assigned a new ip. When I tried to login I had to go to my email and verify the new ip before I could login.

Except that your username is your account name and everyone on your guild, friends list and those who ignore you can see it.

Well, there you go people. Like I said. There is NO security issue. NONE. Security is not a problem. Your account is secure. You shall not hack! Imagine the hackers are the Broncos and Zenimax is the Seahawks. Any other way I can spell it out for you?

I saw it in a post on the Dev Tracker from the beta in February. It would of been a deal breaker for me also My card is attached to my account and my login is my name and year of birth. So if i got hacked they would have me hook line and sinker really.

Many/Most MMORPGS have a Username/Password Authentication and then a Character name. I feel if people knew my actual Username, then I wouldn't feel as secure. However, the only way for someone to actually steal your account would be by hacking the actual TES Database, or for them to guess your password. Since databases are near impossible to hack (without it being an inside leak), obtaining a password would be the only way. There is a simple solution to this however. Make a complex Password. And dont register your actual Username and Password on 3rd party websites.

I agree with the fact that you should be able to hide the Username.

And I dont really see the benefits of a player being able to see your Username either.

You don't even have to belong to a guild to have your username known. If you /ignore someone, their @username is shown.
