In the video game industry..

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 7:49 pm

I gotta know, who makes the big bucks in the video game industry? Is it the CEO's and/or other officers of the company? What about people in the sales and marketing departments? Shareholders? Management? Production? Development? IT?

Lets say for a game like Fallout 3 and Call of Duty Black Ops, who gets the most money from one of these single games?

Also, anyone know of any blueprints of how a video game company is organized? Like a chart or something of the sort.

Even if no one can answer these questions, if someone can point me in the right direction to look for the info or a lead to go on, would be sick

I'm wondering if its different by game, or different by organization, or different by private or public company?

Money goes to money, the owners of the company make the most for pretty much any business organisation, followed by management high-ups (such as the CEO and managing director). I think you'll find this applies to both public and private companies.

I heard that in some companies people in Sales get the $$$$$, espescially when it comes to Salary + Bonus/commission.

The majority of a video games budget goes toward marketing/sales. The majority of the profits go to the CEO/higher ups.

You "heard"?

People who work on commission get, well, commission, which is a small percentage of sales prices. There are many industries in which sales positions are strictly commissioned.

Who (as in "person" ) gets the most money?
Well, in the way of salaries + bonuses, CEO, then President, Board of Directors, then down the line.
In the way of who gets the profits, it would be the owners, being private investors, or share holders.

But they don't get money for just one game: bonuses are based on overall financial performance of the company.

The politicians who go on these anti-violence in schools crusades by using violent video games as ammo. They get more campaign funding from taxpayers than any game profits.

I don't think any one man gets a whole bunch of money.

Black Ops sold millions of copies, which means millions of dollars. I doubt the CEO gets it all. It's surely distributed in salaries, and other expenses. At the end everyone gets paid..

That's every company. Companies have all the rights of an individual with no real liability at all.

The CEO is usually the highest paid person in a company.

I would think that game developers don't actually get paid good money for the work they put in (unfortunately). [I am just speculating]

This is true. I'm not sure about the art side, but I know that programmers can make far more money in other fields than they do in games, and they'd probably not work as hard either.

He must be from New York. Thats where I'm from and people can always tell when I use the word sick to describe something good.

But on topic, I can assure you that people dont get into the game industry because of the money. They do it because its their passion to create games/create art/program. Now this may not be true for some of the execs but thats the case in pretty much every company.
