The Vigilant

The Vigilant
---------------

Plot: Shortly after the use of Project Purity at the end of Fallout 3, The Brotherhood of Steel and the Lone Wanderer have completed bringing pure water back to the wastes. What was envisioned as a quick fix, however, proved to be anything but. While water was back in the wastelands, there were still tons of problems. The Enclave, nearly broken by the death of President John Henry Eden and with none of it's members aware of his true nature, have become Zealots to their cause. Believing the Brotherhood and The Wanderer destroyed America's one true hope, they've vowed to destroy any and all efforts the Brotherhood makes on bringing life back to the wasteland.

What project purity also proved is the expansion abilities of the GECK. One device was used at Project Purity to purify all the water in the basin, so it was logical to assume that given the right circumstances they could bring life back to a bigger area of the wasteland. The Lone Wanderer had come across one such area in his travels. Oasis. The only fertile land land in the capital wasteland, if they could get the GECK there and use it properly the GECK could spread life across a great portion of the wasteland straight away.

The Enclave is aware of this plan, however, and would not allow the GECK to cross the wasteland without harming it. So, the Brotherhood was forced to find a new way. With limited resources compared to the Enclave, the Capital Wasteland Brotherhood constructed a massive vehicle known as The Vigilant. At it's most basic form, it's a gigantic armored car. Bringing together a crew of five on the vehicle, in addition to the Lone Wanderer himself, this is the chariot that should carry them to reforming the waste. The question is, can they make it from the citadel to Oasis without the Enclave stopping them first?

Rules
---------

I know, we hate rules. I have a couple.

1. I will be playing a character called Eden. He's going to be an Enclave soldier, and probably the main villian those in the Vigilant will deal with. I'll also throw in description for you guys of the Vigilant itself, and some events to keep you on your toes. Obviously though, I want to see some interaction! These forum has had some truly crappy roleplays and I want something good!

2. The Lone Wanderer is an open character. I don't care if you play the Wanderer as a male or female, despite what I've said above for convenience. The Wanderer WILL be a central character in this, so try to be somewhat decent if you take the Wanderer for your character. Anything else you choose to do is up to you.

3. Please, I beg of you, no one line posts. Show a little imagination. Give me something to play off of and I promise you I'll give you a great story.

4. PM me your character sheet, I'll try and approve you for the game.

5. You'll notice there's no description space in the character sheet. That's intentional. Describe your character in your first post! Tell me something about them. Make me care. Give your fellow players something to work with.

Alignment (You with the Enclave? You one of the Vigilant crew?): Enclave
Gear (Armor, weapons, items. Keep it reasonable.): Enclave Officer Suit, .44 Revolver
Quirks (Anything interesting about your character I should know?): If his lips are moving, chances are good he's going to be lying.

Full Name: Wes Johnson

Aw, screw it! Let's start up. Join up as you're interested guys. A few Enclave troops start at Raven Rock.

RAVEN ROCK
-----------------

Zachary Eden stepped out of the vertibird, and held one hand over the top of his brow. He looked remarkably calm, dressed in an enclave jumpsuit that he'd gone through great trouble to maintain. There wasn't so much of a speck of dirt on it. He looked like the mark of professionalism, his hair buzzed close to his head, lips drawn close in his most neutral expression. He used his hand to block out the sun so he could get a good view of the Raven Rock compound. It was even more magnificent than he'd heard it was. This was the first time he'd visited it. In the past few months, it had become hallowed ground. Massive, multistoried in front of him. The place where it had happened.

This was the place. This was where their president had died.

Eden walked away from the vertibird as it's engine sputtered down behind him. There were a few Enclave soldiers on board, relevant operatives. People that mattered to the operation that was coming. He would brief them here. Being at such an important place should inspire them. There was no weapon in the wastes more dangerous than belief. He headed over to the base of the steps, listening to his black boots crunch down in the soil.He got down on one knee and removed one of his gloves to take a handful of dirt in his hands as the small squad began getting out of the vertibird. He let the black soil trickle between his fingers and fall back to the ground.

"Do you know where we are, gentlemen?" Polite. Calm.

Wes slowly emerged from the Veritibird, stooped as not to catch his helmet on the roof. Once out, he stood up to reveal his extreme height, so much so that he had to have custom-built Power Armour. Underneath, his other features were no less of a suprise. His face was horribly disfigured, coated with scars and heavy burns. His large, muscle-bound arms were also extremely butchered, with many a scar along the skin. Before he had joined the Enclave, he was a slave, trained to be loyal and to follow orders without consideration for their consequences. The scars were recieved from his many fights with other slaves he was pitted against so the slavers could gamble.

"Raven Rock, sir." The voice of Wes rung out, slightly mechanised by the helmet. He looked on to the partially destroyed compound and saluted. His former master, although indirect, was killed in the destruction. The huge, power armour clad soldier took up a position infront of the officer before standing to attention, stamping one foot and standing straight, missle launcher poking up over his shoulder and diagonally down past his hip, next to his ripper.

Eden nodded. Wes was loyal, filled with hatred for the Brotherhood of Steel. Filled with hatred for anyone who would oppose them. That would be very useful if channeled correctly

"That's right. Raven Rock. President John Henry Eden had wanted the new America to grow from here. To form at this corner of the Capital Wasteland and expand. We were denied that chance." Zachary rose up to his feet and stood at ease, fingers laced behind his back "The arrogance of the Brotherhood disgusts me, soldiers. We had everything that could help this nation. We had the leadership, we had the technology. We had the will. The Brotherhood only wants control. That's why they killed our president, that's why they set their robot on us at the memorial."

He let that set in with them for a few moments. They needed to be excited, they needed to be passionate for what he was asking. He needed them willing.

"We know what they're going to do. We've made sacrifices to find out the Brotherhood's secrets. Your brothers have died for these secrets."

A lie. The intelligence, the information regarding the Vigilant had not been gleaned by any Enclave agents. They'd managed to get some eyebots in to record the information. Invoking dead soldiers though, carried more impact with it. He sounded convincing. The soldiers would be likely to believe him.

"I need your help, soldiers. I brought you here to remind you what we're fighting for. I need to know if you're committed." He looked at Wes. Wes was committed, if he could trust anyone to be ready to go after the Brotherhood of Steel it would be him.

Wes listened, taking in all that was said. Talk of Eden's death and the Brotherhood enraged him, the deaths of his fellow troopers meant nothing to him, but Eden was the first master who'd provided him with water, food...The only master worthy of Wes' complete and undying loyalty and his master only had one wish; to follow any orders given to him by his superiors. This order, Wes would honour until death.

His great hands had balled up, forming two, large fists, a way of channelling his rage. The burn on his face seemed to hurt with a greater intensity, yet it was only his mind as he remembered how he'd 'earnt' it. The Brotherhood had raided his last master's compound, killing and murdering all in their, including his master. Wes had tried to stop them, but a stray missile destroyed the roof above him, burying him in rubble and dust. Hours later he awoke, his face was burnt due to the blast from the missile, but he was still alive. The only noise he could hear was the voice of President Henry Eden, the messages of this great man playing over and over in his head.

Eventually, an Enclave scouting squad arrived and found Wes. He looked over them, releasing who they were. "Hail the Enclave." His voice had rung out as they approached, bemussing the most senior of members. The officer, though, saw potential in the large man and ordered for him to be taken back and be retrained...And now he was here.

"I. I am committed, sir." Wes stood forward, once more saluting, his hand still formed into a fist. "I will serve the Enclave 'til my soul is ripped from my body, sir."

"Good."

Wes wasn't particularly important to Eden. He looked at him the same way he looked at a screwdriver or a wrench. A tool. A particularly useful tool, but a tool nonetheless. The reality of the wastes was that, eventually, Wes would die. In Eden's mind, the only hope he could have was that he would die in service of something greater than himself. He could see the rage boiling over in the scarred juggernaut and couldn't help but smile. He would be more useful than anyone else in the platoon for what was to come. The reason was simple: He believed. It seemed to Eden that the former slave's will could carry him through any obstacle in his path. That was useful.

"The Brotherhood of Steel have found a way to encourage growth in the wasteland. To bring new life. I know what all of you must be thinking, perhaps it would be best if we let it happen. What harm could come of it? Simple. The Enclave, America, we are law. We are government. The Brotherhood has shown they believe in anarchy, in opening to the wastes to the beasts, to the criminals, to the slavers" A very pointed look at Wes "This cannot be allowed to happen. As unfortunate as it is, sometimes the people do not understand what is best for them. We are the only people capable of saving this land. The Brotherhood cannot be allowed to succeed. I've brought you men here, out of many, because I believe you're special. I believe you understand. I promise you that you will have direct involvement in the birth of the New America. In a changed world."

There was no choice. He didn't over them a choice. It was what would happen. A mutter went through the assembled soldiers. Doubt. He looked over at Wes for assurance, to silence his fellow troops. He would need one of their comrades to confirm it. After all, Zachary had been one of the Enclave's trusted operatives for years. He had a reputation. One that didn't lend itself to trust. The look sent a clear signal. Convince them.

Wes blinked slowly, the words of the Officer repeating over and over in his head. He he'd finished, he saw the look and nodded slowly. The previous talk of Slavers and Brotherhood had boiled his blood, and now was the time to release the steam created. He turned to the Enclave trooper next to him, who had been spreading the doubt through-out the small platoon. "Loyalty." Wes spoke, as if in some sort of chant. The younger soldier turned and looked up to the figure, bewildered. The next thing he saw was the rapid application of Wes' armoured backhand to his visor, knocking him to the floor.

"Honour." He moved forwards, placing a foot on the lad's chest, applying some downwards pressure onto him. "Did you not swear an oath to the President?" He asked, pushing down a slightly harder. "U-Ugh...Y-Yes." He managed to splutter, his hands trying to push the foot off his chest with little luck. "You all should be ashamed. How, HOW, after swearing an oath to our President, go back on your words?" His head looked around to the other members, his face screwed with disgust. "Just because our glorious leader was struck down doesn't mean you can re-tract your sworn loyalty!" Wes removed his foot, only to stomp down once again, causing the soldier's cough and splutter to ring out.

"...Should I make an example of this...This pathetic traitor, sir?" Wes turned his head, removing his foot, hand resting on his ripper. It was obvious in his voice, Wes was 'deadly' serious...

Wes was more impressive by the second. Fanatically loyal. He'd jumped to threatening to kill the man far faster than Zachary could have anticipated. Every once in a while, the officer appreciated a surprise. The man on the ground's eyes were wide, his breath was so ragged he sounded like he was about to pass out. Eden shook his head "Don't. We need him, and now he's been shown an example. An example of someone with purpose."

He put a hand on the soldiers shoulder. It made him wary, at first. There was no guarantee he wouldn't attack him. It was an educated guess though. He reasoned he respected him enough not to attack him. Wes' brutally, thankfully, seemed to directed in the right direction.

"Please, take your hand off the ripper Wes. I want you all to get into the Vertibird. We're heading to Megaton. There's a man there who may be able to direct us in the right direction."

He waved a hand in the direction of the vertibird, glaring down at the man on the ground even as he did.

Wes removed his hand from the ripper on command, instead reaching down to the man on the floor, sliding two fingers down the front of his armour around his neck and jerking him up from the floor onto his feet. He returned to face Eden. "My apologies, sir." Wes spoke, both hands, relaxed at his sides. The anger had left his system, on command. The burning on his face faded and his hands were loose and limber, as if forgetting the once boiling rage in a flash. "I should not of acted to such an extreme. Please forgive me." Wes bowed his head, before walking over to the Vertibird and sitting inside, head in his hands.

Wes hated failure. Almost a much as the Brotherhood. He hated failing a task, but also hated when others failed. Yet, by far the most hated, was failing his Master, which with that show of anger, he'd accomplised. The large man's brain was in over-drive, pummelling himself physically, refining his anger and actions, ready for the next time he was called upon. The other soldiers looked at the man in a strange, bemused fashion. They weren't sure if he was about to turn on them again, or if he was asleep...He was still. Calm. Unpredictable nevertheless.

ooc: Just a quick request folks. Currently, I'm running Eden with the Enclave to keep story going there. I think I might jump in with another character to help drive the Vigilant crew along. As I like to involve all the players in any decisions for the game, would that be okay by you?

Zachary stepped inside the vertibird and took a seat. He leaned back against the wall and steepled his fingers in front of him. The engine came to life and started to lift off the ground. It was jerky, the rapid gain in altitude was unsettling him. At least he had something inanimate to be upset about. The rest of them looked scared to death of Wes. He raised an eyebrow and watched them for a few minutes. Watched them quiver. He could see the other man's shoulder slumped a little, muscles limp. Resigned. He believed he had failed. For a moment, the operative considered correcting that. To tell him he was fulfilling his purpose perfectly. In the end he decided against it. Better to leave him be. Better to leave him with something to prove.

"I'm afraid I misspoke before. We're looking for a...creature...named Gob." Eden explained smoothly, watching the wasteland rush by out the window "He's a ghoul. Working at a saloon. I don't believe that they'll try and engage hostilities with us, but if we do do not hesitate. Kill them. All of them. Except for Gob. He's met a man working with the Brotherhood, and he can provide us with a location. I need that location."

He rolled his neck around slowly and cracked his neck. They would land the bird right in the middle of Megaton, put it down on a building so they get could there fast. Speed was a necessity.

"Wes." Zachary said, a point in his one word. Demanding attention. Needing to be sure he was awake and ready.

Thoughts of many a nature rushed through Wes' head, mainly anger. Anger directed towards himself. Yet, at this time, duty called. He dismissed those thoughts and slowly reared his large head, his gaze piercing through the tinted visor, meeting the look of the Officer. His eyes just store, no emotion were in them, just...Empty.

"Yes, sir?" He spoke, voice even colder and emotionless due to the filtration system. Most of the other troopers were watching Wes now, wondering what he'd do next after having taken down the other soldier...But Wes was calm, he lowered his arms in a relaxed manner, his eyes still fixed on Zachary. His body language showed he meant no harm, nor did it show any aggression, but his last stance, outside was very similiar...

ooc: I think I'm going to take a break for now. Go get some sleep myself. I'll be back later tonight to start up the vigilant story.

LUKE DAILY, CITADEL
------------------------------

Luke wheeled himself out from under the massive vehicle and coughed some of the dust up from his lungs. It was a dry day, the wastes seemed completely shocked out of life. Nothing moving outside the citadel walls. Barely anything moving inside them. The Brotherhood of Steel knights and initiates surrounded the landcrawler, on guard against any possible enclave assault. They'd tried to keep it quiet, but one would never know until it was too late if they'd succeeded.

He looked like a scientist, that was for sure. Black hair cut in a crew cut, eyes behind a pair of old glasses. Even his walk, shuffling tiny steps, showed a man who was nervous in everything he did. The Vigilant was ready though, made from old junk parts gleaned from the waste and months of work going into it. Only the Wanderer knew where Oasis was, and he had already locked himself up inside the vehicle. It was time to meet the crew.

ooc: guess i will show my guy

John looked up at the sun and thought this is the most boring ever. His brown hair was in a long look and his blue eyes showed his boredom he was a very thin and he never really talked to many people due to him being a solo recon solder. The most exciting thing he had done today go out and take a nap. The vigilant was almost done and they would be leaving soon. But he was never sure they always found something that was loose or broken. He had been with the brotherhood since he was 25 and was experienced in fighting at long range but he never got a chance to fight the enclave due to him being on a recon mission when they took the water purifier. He saw Luke coming to probably meet him and the others

Luke Daily, Citadel
------------------------

"I, uh, I just want to thank you for doing this." Luke muttered as he came around the side of the Vigilant. He rested a hand against the hull of the vehicle. Absolute stone cold metal. Impenetrable. He hoped it would protect them on the way to Oasis. If it failed, they could still get there. It'd be a walk over land. The most dangerous land there was. "There's enough food on there for the trip. Enough water to get us by. It's all up to you."

They were different. All of them. A ragtag bunch of soldiers. People with different skills. There reactions were unpredictable. There was no formula to it. No way to figure out what they would do if it went to [censored]. He had to be prepared for ready.

"My name is Daily. Luke Daily. I helped build this, I'll be your doctor on board. Could I get your names please?"

The knights on the walls were turning their heads just a bit, trying to listen to what was happening. This was it.

ZACHARY EDEN, ENCLAVE VERTIBIRD, MEGATON
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The Vertibird began to descend. Eden didn't say anything to Wes as they headed down. He reached into his uniform and removed his revolver. He fished the rounds out of the uniform and began to load the bullets in. One by one, slowly fitting them in. He heard the vehicle come to a stop and looked out the window. They were sitting beside a house, a small distance away from the atom bomb at the middle of town. With the gun loaded, he put in the holster at his hip and nodded to the soldiers. They began to ready their weapons, fiddling with their power armor and getting ready. In the unlikely event they did get out and were attacked, the armor would protect them. The citizens weren't threatning. Not professionally trained and carrying paltry small arms. Not a problem.

He heard the engines shut down and one of the other soldiers pushed open the hatch. He could hear the panicked voices outside, citizens running to get inside their buildings. This was much more up front than they typically were. It wasn't like the Enclave had habit of storming in and making themselves heard. A fact Zachary was none too pleased about. One must make themselves heard.

"Do you know why we are powerful, Wes?" He mused, pulling himself up to his feet and watching the soliders begin to rush out into town "We are powerful because of the spectacle of fearsome acts."

With that, he stepped out of the Vertibird. When he hit ground there was one man in front of them. An older black man, with a thick bushy beard aiming one of the chinese assault rifles directly at his face from a short distance away. The Enclave Soldiers had their rifles trained on him. Lucas Simms. The sheriff of Megaton. Zachary raised an eyebrow, and waited for Wes to show up. The big man was frightening. Him being there would put Simms off, enough to take advantage of his concern.

ANTHONY BROWN, CITADEL

Anthony awoke from his slumber to that voice....the voice of Luke Daily. "Huh? What's happening? Are we ready!?" said Anthony, excitedly. He was only 16, but he was as battle-ready as anyone else. The Enclave had taken the one person he had in life, his father, and he wanted to make them pay dearly. He hadn't much to live for anymore. His family was dead. His home was now a pile of burning woodchips and hot stone (as most of Greyditch now was). His whole life was crushed. He knew he wouldn't last long by himself out in the Wastes, but before he took his last breath, he was going to destroy the Enclave's plans.

"No, son, not quite yet. What's your name?" said Luke. "Oh, sorry. I'm Anthony Brown. Not too strong, but I'm quite handy with a pistol." replied Anthony as he tipped forward his Sherrif's Hat to conceal his face. He was a shy kid. He hardly opened up to anybody, because without a father to guide him, he was afraid he'd get close to the wrong person.

Anthony's father had been the Sherrif of Greyditch about a year before he joined the Vigilant. Wanting Anthony to be able to fend for himself out in the wasteland, his dad took him out for target practice a few times every week. Those things he referred to as "floating eyes" had been blaring out propaganda and waking him in the night, so naturally, that's what he had picked as their main targets. Every week the both of them managed to destroy about 4 eyebots. This made Anthony a pretty nice shot with a pistol. Apparantly, the Enclave didn't take too kindly to having their "eyes in the Wastes" destroyed, so they sent in a unit to exterminate the Sherrif. While Anthony was out scavenging food, his house was ransacked, and his father was murdered in cold blood. He returned to find nothing left in his house but rubble and the dead body of his father. Devastated, he took his father's hat, Regulator Duster, and lucky .32 Pistol as momentos. When questioned, his next door neighbor, Brian Wilks, told him that "a big spaceship lookin' thing came and dropped some guys in big scary armor out", then they went in his house. Anthony knew that this was the Enclave from stories that he had heard. With nothing but the clothes on his back and his gun in his holster, he set off to the Citadel, where he knew the only resistance to the Enclave was left. That's where he was today.

Anthony stood up from the spot he had been sleeping at on the ground, and brushed the silt from his Duster. "I'm ready when you're ready." he said in a promising tone.

ooc: Woooooow. Hell of a first RP post. Thumbs up. The one bit of advice would be, don't play other people's characters. Let them control their own! Now, I will make an exception to this rule! lol. Anybody who needs to control Luke to set a scene, feel free. He's there to move the story along.

LUKE DAILY, CITADEL
-------------------------------

"Wait, what?" Luke asked, stunned "You're a child. Who put you up to this? I don't think you can come with us. Something bad will happen if you do Mr...Brown. I can't allow it. I just can't."

He was a teenager, and straight away Luke realized how foolish it was to call him a child. Nothing a teenager hated worse. One grew up fast on the wasteland, but what they were doing wasn't an every day example of survival. There was a very real possibility of something horrible happening. He could see his enthusiasm though. He wanted to help. Luke himself had been that idealistic, once. That was why he'd become a scientist. He smiled softly and spoke.

"....I see you have a pistol. Can you shoot?"

He looked around the ground for a couple of moments. One of the advantages of the Citadel's location was that there was always junk sitting around he could use. Today was no exception. He picked a tin can up off the ground and headed over to a busted up car sitting against the wall. He placed it carefully on the hood and headed back over to stand beside Anthony. If the boy could hold his own, it would be easier to rationalize bringing him aboard the Vigilant. They couldn't afford to spend all their time defending him. He nodded at the can and spoke "Go ahead, show me what you have."

Following that, Luke used his fingers to plug his ears. Guns were loud! It could damage the eardrum, after all.
