"The Voice" - From Dune?

Post » Sat Jun 11, 2011 5:55 am

I just realized that I've heard "The Voice" before. In Dune!

I never read the books, but in the movie the Bene Gesserit (Psychics) use "The Voice" to control minds (pretty sure George Lucas ripped that off).

Also, a huge part of the movie is "Weirding Modules". They're weapons that amplify and focus a user's voice, and allow them to affect reality (i.e. make things go boom) by yelling certain phrases into the module, just like Dragon Shouts!

Has anyone else thought this or am I the only one who saw Dune?

Can't find a decent video but here are some links:

I do not remember reading this in the actual novels, though I was young at the time and have maybe forgotten. "The Voice" sounds familiar, but the other parts???

I've never gotten around to reading the books, so I have no idea how close the movie is.

But, reading about Nord warriors and Tiber Septim using their voice in battle reminded me of the Fremen in Dune doing the same with the weirding modules.

Yes, the weirding modules were added to the movie because blasters were "in" at the time.

I realized this a while ago as well. But personally, I thought Dune the movie svcked. Never read the books, so I couldn't say what I think of them.

I always thought Thu'um was more like the Old Speech in Earthsea.

Both are the languages of dragons, and are made up of words of power that can be used to do magic.

And read Dune. Best book ever. Wasn't too impressed with Dune Messiah though.

In the Dune novels the Voice was limited to control of other people but extremely skilled users could use it to kill. The abilities of the Bene Gesserit were in the range of plausible physics and human biology. Except for the genetic memory and Leto II powers in Children of Dune.

The two aren't really the same... And everyone who has only seen the David Lynch movie "Dune" NEEDS to go read the books right now; at least the first. That movie was ridiculously bad; it didn't do the books justice by a mile.

The Voice in the Dune novels was a technique used by the Bene Gesserit that allowed a trained user to control the autonomous functions of another. That is, a Reverend Mother could literally command an untrained person to move, stand still, or whatever by bypassing their conscious mind and giving orders to their muscles and nerves directly. The martial arts aspect of this training was an extremely fine control over your own nerves and muscles which allowed for extremely fast reflexes and speed. Lynch's "weirding modules" are just plain stupid.

The Voice in Elder Scrolls has been around for a long time. The early Pocket Guides mention the Greybeards using Thu'um, a great power of the voice that involves the wind and the power of Kyne. I think it is completely different from its usage in Dune. The idea of a person's voice having mystical properties has been around in myth and legend for ages though.
