The "Volare!" Quest

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 4:03 am

Hi,
I wanted to finish the quest "Volare!". It so far was quite easy, but after I talked to Loyal and found out what I have to do, I decided to look up in the quest and realized there are Deathclaws involved in it. I really want to finish it, but the problem is I can't kill a single Deathclaw. I'm level 16 currently, with around 90 gun (something around this number, kind of forgot) and I never managed to kill a single one. I believe there are like 3 deathclaws there?

Any tips for killing those bastards? I believe the only powerful guns I have are Mini gun and Incinator (Got a Grenade Launcher but it seems week). Are there any chances I can beat them with these two? They seriously kill me with 2 hits, I can't even manager to use stimpaks before I need again and again and again.

On a side note...Instead of making another thread, how do I get to have two companions? And who are the most useful? I have Veronica currently, and had Boone before while Cass is available.

You need a sniper rifle or "This Machine". I understand both can be found at camp McCarren (sp?) a sniper rifle is supposed to be in one of the tents and This Machine is an unlisted quest reward. Or at least, it was unlisted in my game. Fantastic gun by the way. Great penetrating power.

Interesting gun. I haven't discovered that area yet. How is the quest by the way? Any difficulties?

I have done all the boomers quests several times over and the only thing I had to fight was a few giant ants, no death claws.

This. I have never had to fight a deathclaw during this quest. Giant ants and Lakelurks yes. Deathclaws? Certainly not.

Where do you have to walk for Loyal? I haven't done that quest in a while and I never had to fight a Deathclaw. I'm level 23 and have only seen once in the game so far all together. I actually thought they got rid of them until I was level 17.

There's no deathclaw anywhere near Lake Meade. If you go down there by way of 188 trading post the most you'll bump into is some lakelurks, which can easily be one-shotted with a trail carbine. Heading south by I15 will bump you right into a quarry full of them but I15 is so far out of your way it boggles the mind why the game would have you go that way.

Volare had no combat with Deathclaws for me, in fact I barely had any combat except for the ants in the power room. Lake Mead is awfully easy to get to, for example start outside Hoover Dam and head straight for it, once in the water - with your rebreather - head straight for the quest marker.

The companion question: You can have at maximum two companions: Robotic (ED-E Or Rex) and Human(Boone, Cass, Arcade, Raul). You cannot have two humans or two robots, there are possiblites of more allies - not travelling companions - in the game such as a Radio for a certain faction.

Cool thanks. Will see how I can either Rex or ED-E.

As was said, no deathclaws. However, there are some cazadors if you stray too far from the shore line.
In fact, for all the boomer quests, I never had to pull a trigger.

Spoiler
Boone killed two ants before I could get my gun out and I finished the "Ant misbehaven" quest without firing a shot.
Fixed some solar panels
Helped some patients
Listen to a kid for 10 min
Played cupid
Gave up some scrap metal

Its funny how your working for the boomers(and their obsessed with explosives)and yet the explosive skill is only used in one speech check.

I wouldn't say "no DCs". I ran into one on the way to Lake Mead to raise the plane. I intentionally stayed off the road though. I followed the tracks out of Nellis and then hugged the mountains on my way around them. If I'd have stuck to the road I wouldn't have seen the DC. I can one shot them now anyway so I tend to look for a fight. I'm lvl 22 though, so it may have just been a random spawn. If you stay on the road you'll be fine. Just, as someone already mention, be aware there is a hive of Cazadores that you can easily run into if you are not careful.

Thanks guys. I got This Machine which seems powerful (as well as Sniper Rifle which got for cheap!) if I get into trouble (I'm those who tend to head straight out of the quest mark if I find an empty triangle)
Never fought a grown Cazadores however. Only found some young ones. What tips can I beg to kill them? AFAIK They all come in one group, which is a pain.

on the way to the lake, stray too far left of the road theres a train tunnel with about 5 deathclaws roaming outside (just before you reach the cazadors)

Cazadores are a pain. Best bet is to find a clear path, start hitting them from a distance, and then backpedal to keep them away from you.

Also, aim for the wings. Crippling those should at least bring them down to the ground and hopefully slow them down.

If you travel along the lakeshore instead of following the road you should avoid any deathclaws in the area. Not to say that you trip will be entirely uneventful, but you should miss any of the deathclaw packs that roam that region.

Find the suppressor mod for the Sniper rifle. The Gun Runners have it come up often. With that, and a good sneak skill, you can one shot all the Cazadores without them ever coming after you. Do it outside of VATS. If you can't go that route go for their wings in VATS. HP ammo also crushes them.

There are many, many deathclaws around gypsym mine which is due south from Nellis. I ran into them during Volare, however, they are blind deathclaws so they aren't too hard to handle.

Sorry for the ignorant, but what do you mean by "Sneaking Skill"? Do you mean Stealth Boy?

"Sneak" is one of the attributes you choose to enhance (or not) at the very beginning and may add to at each level up. High sneak skill translates into successful pickpocketing and remaining undetected when in a crouch (sneaking) Also, high sneak leads to more critical hits when attacking.

The path from Nellis to the sunken bomber is indeed rife with Deathclaws, but you don't necessarily have to fight any of them. I snuck the whole way there and didn't have to deal with a single one. Use a Stealthboy if they freak you out that much.
