The Wait...

The bullets just seemed to come from everywhere, as Bennie and I ran for our lives (just for clarity, Bennie Da Jhett is my character, and in spite of the name, she's a she while I'm a he). The constant ting and ding of bullets off of the T-60 armor we'd just found was almost louder than the sound of the gunfire from the Raiders and the combat rifle Bennie carried combined. It was like the night was lit by a thousand fireflies flitting our way from every direction.

In a flash, Bennie used some purified water and a hit of psycho jet in mid-air as we leaped from a wooden pier into the dark water. I was a little afraid Bennie would be running on the bullets instead of dropping into the water, but with a mighty splash, we sank into the murk of deep water. I instantly kinda wished the T-60 had had legs...

The bullets were still incoming, though not as many, and finally the Raiders seemed to lose track of us under the thin cover of the water. It was a long and very slow stroll while completely blind in the inky depths, but we finally made it to the shore line. Thank goodness for the Aquagirl perk...

Leaving the water, we were undetected by the Raiders, and we were fortunate to find a small Red Rocket station very nearby. The station didn't have a garage, or a separate office area, but just outside the back door was a Power Armor station. After checking the area, we put the T-60 into the station and repaired most of the damage.

The darkness around the station was impenetrable, but there seemed to be nothing bad out and about. Bennie and I just squatted down in stealth mode, and we watched the area using a night vision scope. Nothing moved, and the only sound was crickets.

We were in unfamiliar territory, Bennie had never been to this particular area before, and neither had I. We didn't really know where we were going, or what we'd find when we got there so we decided the prudent thing to do was wait for sunup so we could at least see what was trying to kill us. We'd been distracted when Preston was telling us about the job, so all we really knew was that the mission had something to do with groupies.

At any rate, we waited for a while with Bennie hunched over the scope hoping for somehting nasty to break the monotony, while I finished off my coffee. A few minutes went by, and I got Bennie's attention for a second.

"Hey Bennie. I'm going to the kitchen for a refill on my coffee, be good while I'm gone and keep your eyes open."

Bennie for her part was not impressed, it seemed.

"What do you mean you're going for coffee?!? What am I supposed to if Godzirra shows up and wants to have me for a late-night snack? I can't shoot, or run, or anything without your help!"

I stood up and started for the kitchen, saying "Don't worry, if anything gets you, I'll just reload the game, eh?" I didn't quite hear her response, which was probably a good thing.

A few minutes later I returned with my brew, and sat down in my chair. I was content to just watch the endless turning of the camera as it whirled around Bennie, but she seemed to know that I was there. ...0r I jiggled the mouse unintentionally.

After a moment, she broke the silence.

"Tell me, coffee man, who was the pinhead who decided that I should have to have a chair or a bed to use the wait feature? I've been crouched down here for hours now, holding this fully modded and night-scoped .308, looking out this damned busted window at nothing. The rifle feels like it weighs a ton, and I don't think I can move my legs if my life depended on it. I swear, grass is growing up out of the floor and wrapping around my feet."

I took a sip, then after a moment's thought said "Beth did it it. That's not really her name, but a lot of us call her that."

"So who the hell is this Beth that she can just do this to me without so much as a by-your-leave or an explanation?"

The camera started it's relentless turning again as I replied. "She made the game, wrote the code, animations, storylines, built the scenes, made the whole thing. You wouldn't exist at all without her."

The silence threatened to drown out the crickets before Bennie responded. " I wanna talk to this Beth, you hear me? I wanna know just why I can't just pass the time without a chair instead of having to endure a conversation with a coffee-sipping knucklehead. Also, I wanna know just WHY THE HELL every NPC in this game can lay down and take a nap, but I always have to sleep standing like an idiot and just staring at the bed! I'd like to join this broad in her bedroom and see if SHE sleeps standing up!"

I thought over possible responses for a moment, but decided I'd just play it safe. "If I ever run into Beth, I'll tell her you want to have a word, eh?"

I didn't get a reply, but I could hear the grumbling responses working their way in my direction. To forestall, I broke the silence. "Hey! It looks like it's getting light enough to see out there! Let's climb into that armor and go kill something!"

A smile broke across her face, and she readily agreed. "Yeah, alright. Let's get going. You know, I can't for the life of me figure out why we're killing groupies... but at this point, I don't really care. ...and changing the subject isn't going to get you off the hook. Don't you dare forget I want words with this Beth!"

So, Beth (and anybody else reading this tale of terror) why can't characters wait without a chair, and why can't they lay down to sleep? Tell me it's not just perverted cruelty, please? :D
