Okay, so I might be a little late to the party but I just got around to watching the first episode on Hulu and I was a little disappointed by it. The premise is sound but the execution was just so flawed, there were so many writing/acting/inconsistent nuances that just really put me off. I don't like the way the zombies are portrayed and so far they haven't really seemed all that menacing. I also found the partner/wife implication to be tacky and way too reminiscent of Pearl Harbor. The ending especially put me off in that he runs straight into a trap, gets surrounded, then decides to kill himself (taking time to apologize to his family...) only to THEN look up and see a magical escape hole into a tank.... I really hope the series gets better in the subsequent episodes because it has so much potential that I'd hate to see it squandered by sloppy writing.

I don't see how its magical since real tanks have them.

The zombies aren't supposed to be menacing in such little numbers, because the shows plays by old school rules. In massive group, like at the end of the episode? How did that not get your heart pumping? I was on the edge of my seat when he put his gun to his head! I knew he was going to get out, but I didn't know HOW! I think the writing is great. It gets me, the viewer, wanting to know what happens next, and craving for more.

And, trust me, the episodes only get better from the first. The third, though, is so-so.

I don't see how its magical since real tanks have them.

You would think a gaping escape hatch would be something you would notice when you're crawling right under it. The scene played out so sloppily that he gets cornered, decides to kill himself, and then he turns over only to go "lol, jk" and climb into a tank. It just seems like fickle writing.

I can understand that, but I felt it was odd that the black guy would warn the main character about causing noise and then he'll go meandering through a park to try and find some crawling zombie only to shoot it and not even worry about getting back to his car without zombies being attracted to the area. It lacked tension and just seemed so haphazard, it seemed out of line for what the rest of the episode tried to allude to.

I'm really curious to see how episode 2 pans out so I can get a feel for the series.

I was very sad about the horse. For some reason I get more emotional about animals dieing in films and programmes than I do about humans.

Same here. I think it's reasonable, considering the fear you can see and hear coming from animals on film has all had to be captured for real at some point down the line, whereas even when engrossed we're subconsciously aware humans are acting.

The horse dying was the worst scene of the series so far for me. The horse put up no fight at all. A real horse would have been kicking and bucking for its life. (Admittedly, difficult/dangerous to shoot that kind of carnage). Well, a real horse wouldn't have got so close to a big mass of dead meat in the first place (they can smell death and are terrified of it). The horse also looked like it had a few long moments where it would have fled. Anyway, that was the only part I had to suspend my disbelief. The rest of the series so far has been perfectly shot.

Episode 4 spoilers ahead. Don't read if you haven't watched it!

Spoiler
Wow, clearly my favourite episode so far, and it's not because of the gorefest at the end, but because of the aftermath. The third episode had a more happy feeling/regular life to it, this one completely broke that out with the last 5 minutes. I was convinced Merl might come back to camp and start a brawl, instead I was surprised to see zombie attacks and pleasantly surprised by the characters' reactions. Loved every seconds of it, and felt bad for the survivors. And the kids.

Plus, there are no longer extras in the survivor side, all eaten by the undead folks. Only the actors are left. Which is always nice. :D

Spoiler
I'm leaning towards the idea Merl drove the van to camp with a load of zombies in the back, and let them reak havoc. I was definitely expecting Merl to go on some sort of killing rampage in the camp though...

Spoiler
No go. The cab of the truck is open to the storage area, as seen when Merls brother is standing in the back and honking the horn.

I have been a fan of the zombie genre for quite a while and I am enjoying this series. Sometimes on a Saturday night when I just want to pop in a movie and relax my wife will look at my list of movies and see a bunch of zombies flicks; she just pats me on the head and says "Have fun dear". When I told her that there was a new zombie TV series she rolled here eyes and mumbled "Oh dear God.." When I sat down to watch Episode 4 she came in and watched a little bit of it with me. Then she got real mad at me, I didn't record Episode 3 so she didn't get to see it. She has been secretly watching this show and really enjoying it as well.

DISCLAIMER - I didn't read every post on all 8 pages of this thread, so my idea may have already been addressed...

I would love to see Bethesda create Fallout 3 / Elder Scrolls style sandbox game based on The Walking Dead. I think there is huge potential for it. Are you listening Bethesda folks? Easy $$$$. Based on the popularity of the show, the thing would sell like hotcakes. I know that I would buy it.

I actually was expecting an episode like Episode 3: "Tell It To The Frogs". It goes to character development, which is huge in this show, since it is a show about the survivors and not so much about the zombies.

Bethesda already has two IP's to worry about, they don't need another one. And I'm pretty sure the last thing we all want is Bethesda to start making games just for easy money.

Well if not Bethesda (I suggested Bethesda because this is their site), then somebody else...the point was about a sandbox game centered around a zombie apocolypse. Perhaps there is already one out there that I don't know about. My understanding is that L4D (I've never played it) is linear and not the open world concept like FO3 or Oblivion.

Finally got to watch episode 4.

Geez I hated those actors who portrayed those gang members. It seems so unauthentic.

Most of the time the show is pretty good.

But there are times when the atmosphere is ruined by some horrible actors. Strange because those not so good actors are put next to good actors.

Loved the ending though, a little reality check for the group.

I hope Glen gets more screen time (even if he has alot already) that dude rules!

I thought that they portrayed the mexicans very well. That's how they really act... The "gangster" ones. And the fact that they did not attack them since the grandma was there is also true since the grandparents are held to the highest regard by all.

Regardless of race and culture, I don't think anyone in their right mind would get in a fight with their grandmother around.

I haven't watched it yet, but my girlfriend has been loving it. I picked up Volume 1 of the comic series yesterday so I'm going to give that a read before I start watching it.

Dang only two episodes left.

I say the finale is gonna be:

the return of one paw merle
+
mixed in w/ the cliff hanger of rick vs shane.

I wonder if well see anything else closer to the comics, kinda seems like they might take the show onto its own course.

SPOILERS

episodes are getting a bit silly now. it started off good but the do-gooder sherriff is kind of getting annoying now. you dont risk a group of people for one person even if you did the wrong thing by leaving them behind. it seems like he is making all of his decisions on the basis of whether his conscious can handle it and not on protecting the group. that is dangerous in a leader. the other excuse for going back for the guns was just [censored].......seriously is there a shortage of guns in georgia that i missed out on. wouldnt it have been smarter to scout out small town gunstore or a big store like walmart that stocks guns instead of going to the middle of a zombie city? the scene where the one sister was hovering over the other sister for so long was waaaaaay to drawn out, it seemed like they were just trying to fill minutes up. OK we get it already your upset you sister is going to want to eat Braaaains!!!......move along with the show. and she just hovers over all close to her and noone does anything to prevent her from biting her sister and thus losing two people.

the guy that gets infected is NOT restrained in any way. WOW, and then they leave him alive on the side of the road.....it would be hilarious if he ends up killing some people that get stranded on the road or something. i have actually started doing what i do in a lot of slasher movies like friday the 13th and nightmare on elm street in that i actually want the bad guys to kill the stupid people. ironically the only smart guy seems to be the hillbilly redneck in the group.

next on the list is that there is only one guy in the secret wildfire lab....really. no maintenance people, no security guards, no technicians or IT guys or scientists at all.....just one guy. im supposed to believe that they have a muli-million dollar (maybe billion dollar) installation that no one uses or maintains......ever except for that one guy.

i had high hopes for this show but the writing is getting goofy now. hopefully it gets better.

edit: oh yeah, after the deer hunter zombie wouldnt you think that maybe its time to move your ass. this has got to be the stupidest bunch of morons i have ever seen.

And the show just got weird and [censored]. Really weird. Did they HAVE to waste so much time with the girl starring creepily at her sister? Just drag her out back and do whatever the hell your going to do. We don't want to see you just creepily staring at her over there. Don't even get me started on the whole disease center thing. Not even in the book, and the other cop was supposed to die by Rick's hand because he was paranoid and wanted them to stay through the winter. Rick killed him because he was getting messed up in the head, and I think it was only afterwards he found out that he had been cheating with his wife. My point is this show went from going good to jumping the shark. I'm not coming back to the tv series.
