The Wastes

It has been more than 200 years since man nearly brought about his own extinction due to greed and pride. In the time since then mankind emerged from its Vaults and created a new society. It should come as no surprise that man learned nothing from the mistakes of its past. The reconstruction of society has been a long difficult task for even as one group set about rebuilding their society from the ashes so another set out to conquer them to increase their own wealth. Luckily for the inhabitants of the remains of what was once known as California several heroes made considerable impact on this burgeoning new world.

In the year 2161 a man walks out of Vault 13, within 3 years he discovers and destroys a massive threat to man. The Master is defeated and his army of Super Mutants is, at least temporarily, stopped. The young hero returns home only to be rejected. The Overseer afraid that the man's experiences in the wastes would taint his people.

This young man would go on to become a neigh mythical figure throughout the lands, referred to reverently as The Vault Dweller. Eschewing the technology that had kept his Vault alive for so long this Vault Dweller would set up a tribal group from which would spring another mythological hero of the wastes. This man, known as The Chosen One would emerge from this tribal village in the year 2241, and set off once more into the wastes that had been so altered by his ancestor.

In time he would come across Tandi, a young woman whose life was saved by The Vault Dweller, and play his role in the establishment of the New California Republic. This young tribal would increasingly become exposed to the technology his ancestors has abandoned and would use it to make his own mark on the world. Indeed, he would encounter a weakened Brotherhood of Steel and with their help confront and ultimately destroy the last vestiges of the Pre-War American Government, known as The Enclave.

***

It was into this world that I was born.

The Vault has a long history. Its number lost to the ages few know of its existence and even fewer know of its location. It was opened once many years ago and its population left happily to reclaim the Earth that was their birth rite. Doubtless they all died rather quickly. Repopulated some years later its new inhabitants would come to isolate themselves from the outside world. They have chosen to separate themselves from the Wasteland until such a time as the mutants that wander the wastes have fallen to whatever ill fate must await them. Under strict monarchical rule they have survived beneath the Earth.

Despite their long isolation, or perhaps because of it, it has become their tradition that every generation one citizen, a young man or woman just entering into their physical prime, will be set out into the world to explore and hopefully bring back whatever technology might profit The Vault most.

In the year 2255 a 20 year old man follows in the traditions of his people and steps out into the wasteland.

OOC: I'd love some feedback.

Methinks 'tis good, but it seems a bit... stale, for want of a better word. Another Vault Dweller? Nevertheless, I'd like to see some more of this!

First Panel

Please look at the panel before reading.

Spoiler

It must be something to see the sky for the first time, especially in the desert. Going from living within a series of interconnected boxes most not more than 12x12 feet, and then stepping out to see desert stretch out as far as the eye can see. Running your hands through sand for the first time in your life. Feeling the sun on your skin after 20 years of exposure to nothing but growing lights. Its bound to be a startling transition.

The young man takes it all in as he steps out of the world he has known all his life and into a grand new one. As one step follows another he wonders what mark he will come to leave on this world. Will he follow in the footsteps of those heroes of the past, will he instead adopt a simple life of domesticity perhaps finding himself a wife and raising children, will he allow the wastes to corrupt him?

The future is full of possibility. It is with a new vigor and joy that he begins his exploration of this world

EDIT:

PS

In case you were curious, yes I am using this style of drawing because I lack the talent of say, Spittoonist, but I think it will also come to add something to the story. I hope so anyway.

I came on these forums wait around the time when Vault Dweller tales were becoming less popular and more common, and thus I never really saw a good Vault Dweller fanfic(if there ever was one) so please continue. The art is find, it's simple, but effective at getting the message across(and is ten times better than mine) so keep at it

Was trying to figure out what text I might add to this but figured I'd just post the next panel and go to sleep.

Comments still very much welcome, PM them if you'd rather not comment publicly.

What makes me happy is that I actually have an idea of where this is going, which is rare for me.

P.S.

Eventually there will be potential spoilers. I'll let everyone know when I'm actually going to start encountering NPCS or locations from the real game. I won't actually be following canon, whatever that comes to be, as I am characterizing some of the main characters as I imagined them to be when I first heard about New Vegas.

Some of you may be able to guess what that means.

New panel up tomorrow. It took me a long time to make, particularly since I had applied a gradient to something and it's evidently impossible to convert .svgs to .jpgs if there is a gradient being used.

I looked through every path trying to find the gradient until I realized I could just Select Everything and set it all to be not gradient.

I'll have a nice post to go along with it too.

PS...

If anyone has a character or weapon or some such that they'd like to see in the wasteland let me know. A lot of what I do is just finding reference stuff and kind of fiddling with it, so if you want to see Clint Eastwood or a specific gun or even yourself, as long as you don't mind looking like crap...send me a link.

I'll try to fit you in as a Raider/Slaver/Ghoul/Corpse/Poster/etc.

It's going to be very slow going, but I'm liking this so I think I'll lurch along for a bit.

Imagine walking out of the home you have known your entire life into an entirely new world. The anticipation they had as they set out to take their rightful position in the world. Imagine their disappointment when the world turned out to be nothing more than the **** hell it is. Leaving the clean, peaceful, intellectual world of the vaults and stepping a world where they had to struggle simply to survive. How quickly did their standards change, how quickly did their personalities change.

There was no room for principle in this world, you did what you had to survive.

I've actually been reading this and forgot to tell you how good it is. You drew those pictures by hand, or graphically. Either way good job.

By the way, I love this word "neigh".

I use InkScape. I want to use CS2 or Gimp but I can't find my drawing tablet, it's in storage somewhere.

I'll try to get another slide and bit of text up soon. I know what's happening in the story for awhile, I'm just kind of busy with classes.
