I originally tried posting on yahoo answers about an hour ago but so far no one has answered. This is what i said.

I'm unable to start the quest. According to this page, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:The_Whispering_Door,
to begin i must speak with the innkeeper of The Bannered Mare, Hulda. Instead of Hulda i have Ysolda who will not offer me the option to ask about rumors leaving unable to start the quest. I am level 32 in game and am playing on the Xbox version. I'm not sure if it would make any difference but I've done the civil war quest line also meaning that the original Jarl of Whiterun is in the basemant of the blue palace. The only speech option given to me by Ysolda are:

'I'd like to rent a room. (10 gold)'
'What do you know of the Khajiit?'
'You mentioned trading caravans?'

Please help me solve this problem as i need to complete this quest for the Oblivion Walker achievement.

Basically that was it. I'm sorry if this problem has already been solved or if there is already a thread for it.

if you are level 32 and not getting it, then it must be glitch,.

Prerequisites: You must be Level 20 or higher. Complete Main Quest: Dragon Rising

I'm not even given the option to ask about rumors, i was pretty sure it was a glitch from the start. Would there be any way of by passing this glitch?

I just started talking with Jarl Balgruuf at some random point (level range 25-30 I believe it was). He said he was having a 'problem' with one of his kids. So, he redirected me to this kid (forgot which one) which eventually led to the quest 'The Whispering Door'.

have you got the miscellaneous quest to ask the jarl of white run about his weird children?

No quest for me, just started talking with the guy to see whats up. Then, he gave me an option for the kid to talk to. Starting quest..

ugggg im having the same problem, the bannered mare was due for a cange in leadership and one night someone slipped in and fixed the problem promoting my wife to owner of the mare, but i want all of the daedric artifacts for my sweetie, is there no help?

Dammit, I sided along with the Stormcloacks and drived the Jarl out. How can I start the quest? I found it near Dawnstar in my travels, scary stuff.

A question, how does Ysolda take over the bannered mare?
