The whole "modding" thing

Post » Tue Oct 05, 2010 8:45 am

As the header points at im very new to the concept of modding my game. Due to the coming of skyrim i decided to start a new character in Morrowind.and wanted to try and mod my experience with the game for the better. I searched around the "best" mods here on the forum but i find it to be very complicated and hoped the forum, you guys, would help me find the mods a newb should definitely try out.

Thx in advance :)

There's a lot of mods around the net. Best way is to start searching at sites as Planetelderscrolls. Here's the "top-rated" ones, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/fms/TopRated.php?content=mods .
Remember that a lot of good mods do not always find thier way to the "top".

If you want a full package of things you could always try the Morrowind Overhaul Project, for better graphics, here: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1181729-relz-morrowind-overhaul-sounds-graphics/

If you wish you could always try my overhaul Morrowind Rebirth, more info: http://www.moddb.com/mods/morrowind-rebirth . The reason why I'm advertising my own mod is that I need a lot of feedback.

Good Luck! :goodjob:

I love your last comment because i feel i need it. There are so meny mods and the shere amount of time i need to invest in finding great ones seems overwhelming. But thx for the links, and maybe i'll try yours out then. Will add more purpose to my game if im helping someone develop their mod. :)

Something that greatly help me get started was reading http://btb2.free.fr/morrowind.html. There's a whole list of excellent mods, but most of all, he describes why they are excellent. As an added bonus, the guy is pretty funny.

You might find my mod list interesting if you want to stick to lore-friendly content. And also a bugfree game.

Morrowind Patch Project. Fixes a million bugs.

Morrowind Code Patch. This is a must.

Better heads

Better bodies

Tamriel Rebuilt. This adds huge landmasses which are based on the lore and part of Morrowind.
Official plugins

Join all houses. Not so lore friendly as you shouldn`t be able to join all three great houses but if you want to play the game to the fullest then this is what makes it possible.

CliffracerFIX. Makes cliffracers neutral towards you... it also makes them less annoying, somehow.

encumberance_modifier. This makes your strength give you three times more weight limit... makes things more comfortable for the player, you don`t have to go back to town to sell your loot every five minutes.

Darknut`s textures. This is not the actual name of it. He has several mods that alter armor/weapon/monster textures in the game to appear more sharp and have much more detail. Just google Darknut and you`ll find his stuff.

MGE. Google it. It can remove fog and enable distant land. Instead of your sight being all fogged up, you`ll now have a clear beautiful view.

I also recommend searching some lorefriendly splash screens like this one http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=5463 to spice up your loading screens.

But if you`re feeling naughty and
Spoiler
are into some freaky vampire stuff then you`ll want the underground mod. It has a pretty good questline. Not so lorefriendly, though.

here are my tips -

download all the mods you are going to use for your playthrough before you start! Stops so many headaches and problems down the line...

don't use too many mods! I know alot of people manage to get stable saves with many hundreds of mods, but you really really need to know what you're doing to mess around with that many. I would suggest using just a few mods that you really like. For example I'm doing a minimal-mod playthrough, and am literally just using GCD for better levelling, and then Tamriel Rebuilt and Lokken Mountain, and rise of house telvanni for extra landmass/quests. Just those four alone greatly enhances the length and feel of the game, without making everything feel too cluttered, as well as maintaining a very stable game. Of course, it really depends what kinds of mods you are interested in using...

you should also download and get to know wrye mash and mlox imo, as well as utilizing both of the unofficial patches.

I remember my first attempt with mods - I downloaded every cool looking thing under the sun, started playing, kept on adding mods, got really really far with an awesomely cool character, and then managed to break my game with it crashing every two seconds. heed the words of the fool who has endured this massive annoyance, and thus avoid it at all costs!

This mod doesnt ever seem to get enough attention: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8384

Cleans up the scripts and fixes mistakes. Although you have to watch for any mods that make scripting changes, but this mod should reduce crashes by quite a bit.
