It seem that everybody almost everywhere are ignoring the fact that Todd Howard himself said that your are the Sole Survivor of vault 111 at E3. I know there are a lot of people who believe that the wife and kid are alive, but im honestly not understanding how y'all came to this conclusion. If y'all have any info that I have been unable to find do you mind cluing me in? Id love to be apart of the party.

But the wiki also says your character is either "Howard or Nora"

... Just no. I can't even begin to describe how wrong that is. Howard is one of a few pre-recorded names that Todd Howard used during the presentation.. I'm fairly certain that's about the extent of that.

Could have been simple misdirection on Godd Howards part. He said he didn't want to reveal too much. To be honest we didn't really see much. Only what Bethesda wanted us to see.

Well that had to refer to them as something during creation. Referring to them as Male Character and Female Character during creation would just be awkward. It would be like naming your firstborn "child one".

That's the thing though it's possible it's intentionally misleading. They want the main quest story to be a surprise so natiurally we assume certain things based on the presentation. Riding the hype train to release is all about speculation and theory so let us have our fun ok?

Sole survivor from the event you woke up to or waked you up.

It makes no sense to create an wife and then have her die at the first minutes of the game.

We don't know anything about what will happen down in vault 111. For all we know our family makes it down there with us and whatever happens after that is a mystery. Personally i think atleast your son is alive, but i am hoping both are. That is part of the msytery though, and we won't know before launch.

Its difficult to speculate on something that we have already been told though.

It's not that I don't believe, it's just so that I'm not coming to a final decision until I see it myself.

I'm all too familiar with the way a Dev's words can be misspoken, or taken out of context, and I'm easily accepting of the possibility that Todd Howard might have just said "sole Survivor" in an "as far as you know" sense in order to avid potential spoilers.

But as of right now I take "Sole Survivor" literally.

Todd said you are the sole survivor of Vault 111 and

A. Nothing said the rest of your family made it into Vault 111

B. There are tons of other ways to survivor the war besides Vault 111

Nothing indicates your family is dead, as nothing says they made it into Vault 111 in the first place.

There's nothing saying your family's pod wasn't opened some years before yours was. The "events" that transpire could very well be vault 111 getting raided or having a major malfunction where some of the pods open ahead of schedule while others fail and kill the occupants. The player's pod could have been blocked off by debris from an explosion and they are assumed dead as well, etc...but obviously they survive. The player then leaves the pod and sees dead bodies and no one still in stasis. If she had seen her husband and baby dead, then the dialogue with Wadsworth is very ill fitting. "If you survived then others could have too" and then being all like "sure I'll have food, I need to think." I don't know about you but I'd be very emotional about losing my family.

Maybe the spouse and child do not get taken into the Vault, but one or both survive and become ghouls.

Personally i think it makes perfect sense as they wanted us to the the prewar world. They needed an out so we could have character creation for both male and female. The kid would be a story line enhancer.

If they got out before you would not be the sole survivor.

As Todd Said, events transpire and you emerge from the vault 200 years later.It's perplexing to imagine how your family managed to seek refuge from a nuke that was imminently about to explode and for it to not be Vault 111.I'm not saying it's impossible, but for them to be alive already sounds like Beth has used a mcguffin.

We were not told definitively they were dead. For all we know the whole lone survivor bit is just what our character believes upon waking up and not what the reality actually is. Some of us think this is misleading in order to hide the surprise of the main quest. Like has been said it makes no sense to be able sculpt your mate and have a baby that looks like an amalgamation of both of you just to kill them off permanently.

If they did not get into the vault then they would be dead because the game take place 200 years later. Sure they could have both become ghouls in a tacky/ lazy story but lets be honest. Bethesda is not lazy with their story telling.

There ARE other Vaults you know, other means of surviving the war besides ghouls.....

Possibly other cryogenics chambers in places like MiT.

What are the chances they would get to one of those BEFORE the bombs ripped em to shreds. We saw a bomb go off right in front of them when they are on top of the vault door.

Really though, don't try to reason with him. At this point I'm pretty sure he's a troll. He's been going on about this for weeks now and no amount of logic will sway him.

The bomb wasn't right on top of them, it would have been some distance off actually if you managed to survive the blast.

That very well could be but what happens in the first 30 mins of the game is normally pretty minor the baby and wife could just be devices used to get us attached to them. In fallout 3 finding your dad was creatively small in comparison to purity after all. We could very easily have a massive turn towards deciding a civil war after all there are factions.

My point was that Bethesda have killed off seemingly important characters quickly before.Though I should have clarified.
