The An-Xileel and Morrowind?

Post » Mon Jul 26, 2010 7:14 am

Heya guys i'm reading the book the infernal city and sometimes it's kinda confusing to me. I'm not so much of a lore expert, I know some of the lore but not all. So I was reading the book and somewhere on page 31 Anna?g has a conversation with her father about the "city" and wether they should be affraid or not. Then he says; "It's nothing to worry about. If it's dangerous the An-Xileel will meet it with the same might that drove the Empire out of the Black Marsh and the Dunmer out of Morrowind" mabey i'm just miss interpretating, english isn't my first language, but what did the argonians had to do in Morrowind? The wiki says;

After the Oblivion Crisis, the Nords and Orcs launched attacks from the north. Then, the disappearance of Vivec caused the Ministry of Truth to become unstable. After utilizing the soul of Umbra for his ingenium, Vuhon managed to keep the rock stable. Yet, Umbra managed to escape, causing the rock to crash into Vvardenfell, destroying much of the land and people. After an invasion by the Argonians, the Dunmer were forced to retreat to Solstheim.

So my questions are; who is Vuhon/and Umbra? Why did Vivec leave, I thought he first saved the people of Morrowind and then a few years later it seems like he doesn't care anymore and he'll just call it quits and leaves them to death? And why did the Argonians invade Morrowind? It doesn't make any sence that they invade an island which is destroyed? Why would they drive out the dunmer anyways? Besides all this, for what reason did the Nords and Orcs teamed up and atacked Morrowind?

Anna?g's father speaks of it as if the An-Xileel were hero's for driving the dunmer out of morrowind but I don't seem to understand why. I understand why he would speak of the An-Xileel, driving out the empire out of the black marsh, in such a way but using the two examples in one sentence is kind of confusing I think?

I havn't read the book yet, but if i had to gues Vivec dies. After Nerevar severed the Tribunal's connection to the heart they become mortal once again. That's my theory anyways. And if he hasn't died yet at that point in the book he will be dead pretty soon.

Argonians invaded parts of mainland Morrowind. When you play the game u only play on the island of Vvardenfell. That's what gets destroyed not the mainland. Plus they hate the dunmer more than any other race.

On a little side note the whole mistery trip of Nerevar to the continent of Akavir is going to lead up to something. I think you might see the Akavir try to invade Tamriel, and i think they might be successful. The dawning of a new era implies a new power will rule over Tamriel.

yeah sorry for the mixup, I always make that mistake but by the island I mean Vvardenfell, tho I don't know did the rest of morrowind survive? Yeah I read the same thing in the book so it kind of make sence to invade a country when they are at it's weakest, still it's seems like a cowardice action, but a smart one.

The An-Xileel are essentially a militant cult which has come to power in Northern Blackmarsh
Spoiler
under the leadership of a rogue Hist
.

When the Neravarine (you in "Morrowind") destroyed the Heart of Lorkhan the Tribunal (Vivec, Almalexia, Sotha Sil) essntially lost their link to that which made them god-like strong. This weakening caused Vivec's control over the Ministry of Truth to falter as he grew weaker and weaker; to my knowledge, we should assume he is still alive at this point. It's hard to go much father than this because I'm not sure how far into the story you are, but is all explained.

Spoiler
The Ministry of Truth is the "Oblivion Moon" which hovers above the Temple in Vivec City. Though it is refered to as a moon, it would more accurately be described as a meteor which Vivec, in all his power, prevented from hitting the city by stopping it in it's tracks and holding it in place. As it is described later, his stopping it is a constant effort, and though it appears motionless it retains it's initial inertia (momentum/velocity) meaning, should Vivec ever lose control it'll still crash into the city with the speed and force of a falling meteor.

As Vivec grew weaker, his control of the Ministry faltered, so Vuhon, one of Vivec minions or priests or something, used the soul of Umbra (a super powerful dude who was trapped in a sword (which you can actually get in Morrowind)) to create a device (the ingenium) to help Vivec maintain control. One problem, it had to devour souls to function. This was all well and good as long as it was consuming the souls of peasants and nobodys, but when it came time to eat a certain soul someone got mad and destroyed it (this person shall remain nameless so as not to ruin the story).
Spoiler
It was at this moment that Vivec's power failed completely and the Ministry crashed into Vivec City utterly destroying it and (I believe) killing Vivec. Red Mountain erupted as a result of the impact and everything went to hell in a handbasket.

In the chaos which resulted the recently formed An-Xileel invaded Morrowind to exact thir vengeance on the Dunmer who had oppressed and enslaved their people for so long. They essentially scattered the Dunmer to the winds and conquered what remained of Morrowind.

Edit: I honestly do recall any mention of Vivec "leaving" I just assume he was getting weaker and lost control.

You are mostly correct Zovo. The only parts I found that were off was Vivec. First off, here's this bit from the 33rd sermon:
The citizenry of Vivec screamed as they saw a shooting star come down out of the sky hole like a toll-road of hell. But Vivec merely raised his hand and froze Lie Rock just above the city and then he pierced the monster with Muatra.

(The practice of piercing the Second Aperture is now forbidden.)

When Nerevar returned, he saw the frozen comet above his lord's city. He asked whether or not Vivec wanted it removed.

'I would have done so myself if I wanted, silly Hortator. I shall keep it there with its last intention intact, so that if the love of the people of this city for me ever disappear, so shall the power that holds back their destruction.'

Nerevar said, 'Love is under your will only.'

Vivec smiled and told the Hortator that he had become a Minister of Truth.

The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

Interpret how much you like, but I find it that Vivec seemed to have made it clear that when the people of Morrowind stop loving him, the rock will crash down. Now, if you want to think of the whole Vivec = love = everything CHIM stuff, the jealousy of Vuhon caused love to be forgotten.

In addition, before Oblivion, Vivec was well out of the picture, either through being kidnapped by daedra (a rumor I personally find false), or the events that transpired during http://www.imperial-library.info/characters/trial_vivec.shtml. So saying he died when the moon crashed, or that he was still there to begin with is incorrect.

Also, you didn't need to spoiler tag the moon bit, that has been well established since Morrowind.

It's still in the sermons. Plus, the whole lore forum is a giant spoiler.

You'll find out the answers to most of that if you read the rest of the book, you know. :)

As for the rest... the Argonians had to endure millenia of slavery under the Dunmer. I don't blame 'em for kicking Morrowind when they were down.

And Vivec left either because of http://www.imperial-library.info/characters/trial_vivec.shtml, or 'cause the Nerevarine killed him in Morrowind. It's deliberately left vague like that.

Yea, i don't blame them either. Most of the land they took anyhow was their land to begin with. When Morrowind invaded Argonia. Of course i'm biased.

Peronally, i don't think Nerevar killed Vivec. At least i hope he didn't. He had to of foreseen that a possibility. If he did kill him that big chunk of rock would come crashing down. Maybe the person to be named next for the soul to be consumed was Vivec himself and he said screw this and got the [censored] out of dodge. Hence the rumors why he left. I dunno :twirl: but if that really happend then Nerevar should have killed him to begin with. I hope that's not how it happened. :/

Isn't that why you read books?

I don't believe the An-Xileel were mentioned in lore before. I searched it on TIL and nothing came up IIRC.
