Theatre degree helps Retail and Fast Food 'careers'?

Post » Thu Feb 06, 2014 8:10 am

Met someone here in America on a student visa to attend college. He asked me if theatre degrees help with working at Fast Food and retail jobs since so many of his co-workers (at Walmart) have them.
I thought he was making a joke, but he wasn't. But it did get me thinking, those majors must be a struggle to make work. Anyone have any experience with that? I know big name artists and actors make good money. What about the other end of the spectrum?
Edit: And I know the wacky submajors of art don't really have good prospects. Like making a masterpiece with bacon or fashion design being used to craft a dress made out of old iPhone Charger cords.

Simple supply and demand. Those fields are flooded with people, furthermore many people without degrees. As such there's plenty on the low end making, not only low-end gigs pay very little, but also great competition.

I think that may be one of the most useless degrees out there simply because the things that can be taught in relation to performing arts are taught in different degrees (communication, creative writing, etc), and the main factors of success (luck and natural characteristics) in theater cannot be taught. You have about equal chances of being scouted from a play put on by your class/college as you do an club or group you join, so the advantage of a theater degree over someone in the performing arts without a theater degree is virtually zero.

I believe it was the Bard himself who asked, "Do you want fries with that, or do you not want fries with that?"
