Theme Song

Post » Thu Apr 22, 2010 10:39 pm

I once asked about TES V's music, but I would now like to ask about a more specific piece of music. Morrowind and Oblivion both have their own (similar, but distinctly different)theme songs. What kind of theme song do you believe(or hope) TES V will have? Do you think having one theme song to define the entire series from TES V and up would be a good idea? Do you believe TES V should have a theme song that is similar to Morrowind and/or Oblivion, or should it have a completely different theme song? What kind of qualities do you want TES V's theme song to have?

I'd like TES V to have a different theme song than the previous games, simply because the theme song is great for nostalgia and if each game had the same theme song it would lessen that feeling.

I think it should be more thought invoking, sad, and peaceful like Morrowind's theme, and less loud and blaring like Oblivion's theme. I really don't care for Oblivion's theme. Morrowind's theme was just so magical.

We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine

- I did adore Morrowinds music. Whilst Oblivion was also great, Morrowinds was just more memorable for me

Oblivions theme reminded me of Pirates Of The Caribean, Morrowind's theme makes me Jiz in my pants everytime I hear it, so somthing like Morrowind's but different.

samesies, the tes3 theme was so much better than tes4. Mr Jeremy Soule needs to get back on track.

I think it fit the game more. Morrowind was about an epic quest in an alien world, and the music reflected that. In Oblivion, it's more about a world threatening crisis, and the games theme reflects that too

Personally, I'm a fan of recurring themes and motives throughout series, especially in regards to music. Take for instance, the Final Fantasy series. In almost every game the series' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FI3r8-HA0kA has appeared, though usually in a different context and in slight variation. It helps bind the games together into the series as a whole, in my opinion. That said, I think the theme of TES V should keep the motif that appears in both Morrowind and Oblivion's main themes, albeit changed somewhat to fit the feel of the game, just as it was changed from the peaceful pace of Morrowind to Oblivion's urgency.

I seem to be the only one who likes Oblivion's theme more than Morrowind's. I mean, sure, Morrowind's was more peaceful, but I personally like fast paced music like Oblivion's theme more.

As much as I prefer Morrowind's mystical and hopeful tune to Oblivion's frantic, blaring cacophony of trumpets, I certainly wouldn't ask for a direct rehash of either one. Again, I feel that many of us need consider that, sad as it may be, the province of Morrowind is certainly unparalleled in its exotic sights and sounds. I'm hoping future TES games will be nowhere near as generic in theme as Oblivion, but I doubt we'll be seeing many more giant insects or mushroom towers of any sort.

So what do I want in a main theme? Something meditative and envoking, with good progression (most Oblivion songs have 10 seconds of memorabilia and then it's the same sad soft strings crap for 3 minutes), something that makes you feel hopeful and thoughtful. But perhaps it could be a bit more uplifting and a bit less reflective of Morrowind's "hopeful, triumphant return of Nerevar" feeling. Just because no two Elder Scrolls games are alike.

EDIT: Of course, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_MY0ihuJZc has shown us that generic classical music is a safe fallback as well, though I would hope Bethesda is above that now. :P

You haven't played heard of the Shivering Isles(part of Oblivion) yet, have you? It has both giant insects and mushroom towers.

You love antagonizing me, don't you? :)

I completely forgot about that, actually - still only own a copy of vanilla Oblivion (early distribution, game is still rated T on the manual). The experience was painful and I never wanted to delve further into it ever again, though I've only heard good about Shivering Isles.

Morrowind's theme is much easier to play on piano, I'll give it that. :)

But I liked them, they accurately displayed the settings of the games.

Oblivion was fast-paced and epic, while Morrowind's was slow, calm, and creativity-provoking. Also ironically because of the events revealed in the book, Morrowind's is also sad and almost sounds like a part of a fantasy movie where a main character has died, and everybody's at the funeral.

The experience was painful? Isn't it the motto of Morrowind fans to give games a try because they sometimes only get good when you are deep into them? Seriously, though, if you love Morrowind's atmosphere(and a good gray story with some choices to make), you won't be disappointed by the Shivering Isles. I recommend buying the Oblivion GOTY edition and entering the Isles whenever you want. It makes vanilla Oblivion's environment much more tolerable by giving you a place to explore that greatly contrasts vanilla Oblivion. Speaking of bland environments, I could swear that I've seen you in the past games section. :D Watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLBWnqsXkoU.

I believe the Shivering Isles is something every Morrowind fan must experience. Its setting is even more alien than Morrowind's. Shivering Isles might give some Elder Scrolls fans worried about bland environments hope and I honestly believe that before anyone can properly judge Oblivion, they must experience the Shivering Isles.

Indeed. IMO, SI showed us Morrowind fans that Bethesda hasn't forgotten about us. If Bethesda makes TES V more like Morrowind or SI, I will be a happy camper.

I think maybe remixing it with some new elements would be good, like maybe play the standard melody at the start, and then it completely changes, but I certainly wouldn't want to lose the feel of the first time I started Morrowind up on my Xbox.

I realize it may be hard, but i'd like theme song, that is similar yet distinctive (just like MW and OB theme songs). So that you knew you're launching TES game, but at the same time you knew you're launching TES V and not previous games

Being honest, SI isn't enough to warrant a purchase, in my opinion. It's still Oblivion.
I mean, it's all fine n dandy, but it just aint enough to redeem the whole game

On Topic: I'm pretty much the same as most others, I would like to see something similar to Morrowind, but different. Are there any Nordic instruments? Perhaps Bethesda could record a barfight and pass it off as the theme song, considering it's Skyrim? ^_^

How about something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0YGXhAcXc4?

Or maybe not. As much as I like metal, I don't quite think it would be suitable as a themesomg for TES. ;)

I'll just add another voice to the "variation on the Morrowind themesong" club.

Well Oblivion was set in Cyrodill. Capital province, fertile grasslands and lush forests.I suppose the only provinces that could match the 'alien' feel of Morrowind are the Summerset Isles and the Black Marsh

Although I'm pushing for Skyrim myself

I have to admit that Morrowind's theme ("Call of Magic" or "Nerevar Rising" I've seen both of those used as titles, I don't know what the actual title is) is one of my favorite pieces of music ever, video game or otherwise. And as much as I would like to see it return in the next Elder Scrolls game, I would much rather TESV have its own distinct soundtrack that fits the location and tone of the story.
