Theory about TES:V

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 9:16 am

So the dragonborn clearly looks like a Nord. And obviously Beth isn't going to make only one race playable.

With that in mind, does anyone else get the impression that this 'dragonborn' will be more like Martin Septim, and we'll be the anonymous 'chosen one' who'll help him in his ultimate showdown?

This should really be in the TES V section. The dragon born could be somewhat like the Nerevarine. He could hold some sort of special significance in Nord culture. Mind you, if that was the case, we would've already figured this one out. :P

If they made the player character this Dragon Born it would be really silly, considering that would be re-using a plot hook from Morrowind.

Either way, you're setting yourself up for a Morrowind or Oblivion plot hook. Either be the character or watch him save Tamriel. Right?

I'd rather be the character, personal. I hated being the Messiah's errand boy for Oblivion.

to be fair in one of the trailers for oblivion there was a male Cyrodil in guards armour as the central character in the film. and he wasn't even in the game.

Great point! :)

The one who ever so awkwardly kneels and plants his sword into the ground. I guess this is suppose to symbolize the playing character when in theory they are not restricted to a male imperial.

I'm actually hoping that the "Dragon Born" are a faction of transcended individuals who go through a certain ritual and have connections with the dragons.

Think of the Amulet of Kings geas, where the Dragonborn lights the Fires, which establish his right to the lineage of Alessia - and so Tamriel. I don't believe an enemy is depicted. Rather, the figure receives the breath-life-spirit of the dragon, hence Dragonborn. They and the dragon are one in the same.

I'm more puzzled about why people keep assuming that the guy in the stone carving is the player.

What I can say is hopefully Bethesda continues the tradition of placing us in jail at the beginning. Dragonborn or not, I wouldn't feel right without starting in a jail cell.

Almost, but not quite.

The Nerevarine was a reincarnated historical figure, the Dorvahkiin could simply be the title of a prophesied hero. Similar, but not the same.

That's ridiculous because now YOU'RE assuming that it's got to be one way or the other. Either you're the main character or you're his/her sidekick.

I can count dozens of stories where that doesn't apply. Just because you follow a specific character doesn't mean they're the most important/second more important player in a story. There are a lot more positions one can play than the action hero that fixes everything and gets [censored] done. Sometimes you're just a person caught up in a web of events orchestrated by multiple people.

Well now, that doesn't sound like an RPG at all. :P

Both the rolls he mentioned are the only real exciting ones I personally can think of. Your either helping the central character or you play him. Unless you wanna play a street urchin that see's the whole story unfold from his back alley.

Think of Lord of the Rings, Aragorn was awesome but he didn't even make it near mount doom... still had a massive roll in the story. We could easily just rise up to some general type thing and fight off armies while something else important is happening elsewhere... though i agree that would just be boring and annoying.

Pretty sure the dragonborn reference is just to imply that the plot revolves around someone who happens to be related to Tiber Septim. Could be the PC, could be a key NPC, either way, given that the last heir to the throne was lost in oblivion, it makes sense that Skyrim's plot would involve re-instating the Imperial line.
From memory, most of the elder scrolls have been about the destiny of persons that influence the line of Septim.

So, you're saying either copying Oblivion, Marrowind, or Daggerfall?

Yeah I'm with you there, Oblivion didn't make me feel very important in the main quest, since I was just Martin's errand boy running all over the place while he and Jauffre messed around at cloud ruler. Even Baurus sat around.
