My theory and opinion on the recent server stress setback.

There are tons of people ranting about broken quests. Yeah, I get that, it's frustrating. But one thing to keep in mind is that all those quests are not in and of themselves broken. It's the added stress levels of the servers and the impact of the Phasing system that breaks them.

Somehow I can't help but think that it's the inception of the NPC/Monster Collsion mechanics that everybody begged for that's causing the added stress. Collision mechanics are very resource intensive (hence why they chose to make it absent with PvP). The devs had even mentioned being reluctant to add collision due to server demand. Now that it's there with this recent update, and coincidentally server load has once again failed to maintain Phase mechanics, the setback is pretty obvious. I can't help but think that perhaps ESO should just drop the Collision mechanic system. Sure it's nice to have... but many other MMO's have opted to not implement collision for the same reason.

Thoughts?

I like your theory. I am fine with out CD TBH. They are cool to have, I learn to live with out them in other MMO. I do not understand the under layer of the server enough to say that is right or not. It does good in logic. Many PTS players did not have a problem with the quest breaking, just when the masses of weekend beta tester had that problem. More data to support your theory.

No, it happens before even collision detection is in the game.

I agree, most of the broken quests is coming down to phasing, and collision detection just isn't necessary in ESO.

It did happen for a while. But in the previous beta test (before this current one) the issues had all but disappeared. Now it's come back quite significantly.

If the servers cannot handle 12 people waiting on a hill for a harpy to spawn how are they going to handle 200 people fighting each other?

Something has changed since the last beta.

There is greater dependency on hardware, making the FPS drop pretty badly for lower end graphics cards.

Im guessing that it might be the collision detection thats causing it tbh.

At one point, I dropped to 1.1 FPS in Cyrodil, so I had to lower my settings (that I used in 3 previous beta's) to be able to function.

Its still pretty low FPS tbh....even when settings are lowered.

Even in the PVE environment, the FPS is getting hit hard compared to before.
