Iirc, the experiment was, the overseer was picked because he was secretly sick and would die a few years after the vault closed, the main power supply was desinged to fail, the backup power supply was purposefully insufficient and the armory had 3 times standard stock. When [censored] inevitably hit the fan, at some point a guy named Gary cloned himself a lot and clones instantly turned hostile to non-clones (which I'm pretty sure was on purpose too)
